By definition, the Popie award goes to United's best defensive player in 2009. The award's namesake
is former national team defender Eddie Pope. Not only is Pope widely recognized as the best
defender in United's history, but he is also responsible for the most important goal in United's
history.
Last year's winner was Bryan Namoff with over 50% of the vote.

We've added more information including an auction you can participate in today.
As you know, as a reader of MLSR, we support good causes and that is why we post the following
story about the Nicole Cup. In the interest of full disclosure, we should note that one of our
contributors' cousins was awarded a scholarship by the Nicole Megaloudis foundation.

I have to say that as the summer is winding down and the kids are almost back in
school, I am getting a bit late and lazy with these previews. Last weekend I was sick as a dog, but
this weekend I have no excuse. I promise to do better in the future! And much love to my co-blogger
Nathan for writing entertaining and thorough post game analyses.

Well, the whole two half things has never been more apt. I don't know what Tommy said to the
team in the locker room, but it worked something special.
The first half was honestly the worst 45 minutes of soccer I've ever seen. I'm counting
Screaming Eagles pickup games in that assertion.

And those words are: I'll take it.
The Galaxy put together their longest winning streak of the year at three, all 1-0 victories,
all against tough teams (Houston, New England, Chivas), though you could argue that this is turning
out to be a kind of lost season for the Revs. The scoreline is starting to remind me of the
increasingly iconic 2-0 result that the US MNT always seems to get in huge games.

I was excited as all hell for the Chivas USA vs Galaxy Super Classico game July 10th at Home
Depot Center. Its the game of all games if you are a L.A. area Soccer fan.
The Only Fireworks at HDC one the field were these!

Does anyone know the Heimlich maneuver, cause Chivas USA keeps choking! Click to continue reading...

I'll be working on my Press-Enterprise column this morning, and right now I'm leaning towards
writing on the early trends in MLS this season. I'll probably also write about the local teams as
well since they've got trends of their own to discuss.
One of the two major early trends this season is the high number of red cards.

Chivas USA take on Chicago Fire Saturday after a break. The team has been out of action for two
weeks, and have not played an MLS game in a month due to Superliga.
So whats up?
Injuries are plenty, but that's not news. Raphael Wicky and Alex Zotinca are out. However, a few
of our usuals are coming back.

Chivas USA draw in the most recent battle for LA. Chivas USA scored there only point through
Ante Razov with a spectacular strike from outside the box. To be fair, he deserves goal of the
week... again.
Brad was Brad stopping almost every shot on goal. Buddle snuck one past.
Shavar Thomas is back in the fold and played great.

Chivas USA take on the Red Bulls Saturday. The team sounds a little bent after losing their
point away a couple of weeks ago. I think the Chivas USA controlled that game and were unlucky to
get a point, but here is their chance to prove it to me.
Expected Line up.

Guzan
That's my guess.

So after hearing that Oscar De La Hoya was my new owner, I now have the honor of joining a small
group of athletic men who could say that their boss could not only fire them, but kick their butt
after doing so. Although I hear that Will Chang was a master in the Judo [...]

YEEEEEEEEE HAWWWWWWWWWW! Sorry, I just felt like doing that... I can't help but to think of saying
that every time I get on this ridiculous site and see the picture of Bobby in Houston with his
cowboy hat. Anyways, if you haven't figured it out yet, this isn't Bobby. It's Alecko, aka Esky,
aka Mr. I Get [.

What you see on television has such an impact on your opinion of the game. Seeing that turf (astro
turf ??) takes me back to a very terrible time. Long ago the Toronto Blizzard played at Exhibition
Stadium, the old mistake by the lake, and the ball used to skid and slide all over the place. This
RSL-TFC game had a little of that off-kilter, "ball runs too fast for humans to keep up with" style
of those old NASL nights at the EX.
