Even after only playing each other two times, the New York Cosmos and San Antonio Scorpions have developed quite a nice rivalry.

Last season, the Cosmos beat the Scorpions twice, the second of which clinched the Cosmos a berth in the NASL Soccer Bowl.

FC Dallas and Hassli break up

3rd Degree at related • 0 views

In a move that has been expected for some time, FC Dallas has "mutually agreed" to part ways with forward Eric Hassli.

Hassli, a French striker that came to Dallas from Toronto FC prior to the 2013 season, basically never was able to overcome back injury and fitness issues.

Highlights of Clavijo’s conference call

With Friday's announcement that Colombian striker Andres Escobar would be joining FC Dallas on loan, club technical director Fernando Clavijo held a conference call with local media to discuss the move. Here are some highlights of that call:

What can you tell us about Andres Escobar?

We need to talk about Eric

FC Dallas has exactly 25 days until opening the 2014 regular season against the Montreal Impact at Toyota Stadium on Saturday March 8. And as the club gets set to return from their nearly two-week trip to the United Arab Emirates later this week, there is one question looming-is it time to start getting concerned about the fitness of one Eric Hassli?

Clavijo talks about Hassli’s fitness and UAE trip

This writer caught up with FC Dallas technical director Fernando Clavijo for a few minutes last week before FCD left for the United Arab Emirates and here's what he had to say:

How do you think Eric Hassli looks so far?

Clavijo: One of the things is he's come in lighter than the past, much lighter than the past.

Hassli looks to rebound from 2013

3rd Degree at related • 0 views

This is clearly not how Eric Hassli envisioned his first season with FC Dallas going. The French-born striker battled back issues for much of the year and finished with just one assist in 15 games, four of which were starts. However, with him under contract for 2014, he is no longer worried about what happened in 2013, choosing instead to focus on his preparations heading into the 2014 season, which could be a nice bounce back year for the big goal scorer.

This is not what FCD had in mind for Cooper and Hassli

On Monday morning, Kenny Cooper and Eric Hassli were in the first 11 for FC Dallas against Columbus. Of course, the start for these two strikers didn't come against the Crew's first team, it came in a MLS Reserve Division match in Frisco.

Both Cooper and Hassli played the full 90 of a 3-1 loss to the Columbus reserves, snapping a three-game winning streak by their Dallas counterparts, but this is far from what any of us envisioned for this duo of strikers when they were both acquired on the same day back in preseason.

Making sense of the Hassli situation

When FC Dallas put Eric Hassli on the disabled list on Friday in advance of the MLS Roster Freeze and transferred holding midfielder Peter Luccin from injured reserve to the active roster, it was a move that surprised exactly no one.

Hassli has been all but useless save for two assists since he arrived due to a lack of fitness and seemingly constant injuries while Luccin, who has been injured since February, has worked his way back and is now ready to see first-team minutes, so the move was a no-brainer for FCD head coach Schellas Hyndman and the rest of the club's Competition Committee.

FCD Injury Update: Eric Hassli and Andrew Jacobson both to play this weekend?

The injury report is looking pretty paltry these days for FC Dallas but that's not a bad thing. Of course, it has been a few weeks since Andrew Jacobson suffered a hamstring injury and it's also been a bit of time since striker Eric Hassli saw his back flare up yet again.

However, the news on both players seems favorable based on what FCD head coach Schellas Hyndman had to say after training on Tuesday in Frisco.

Hassli, Jacobson and Loyd Still Appear Unlikely for Saturday

FC Dallas spent about 45 minutes on Friday morning doing a recovery session on the stadium field. However, one player who has been a fixture in the first 11 over the past few seasons, right back Zach Loyd, who has been sidelined with a knee injury, was not on the field with his teammates.

"Yeah, Zach is still on the recovery," was the short response by FCD head coach Schellas Hyndman when asked if there was an update on Loyd after training on Friday.

Tonight, can Schellas level off the nose dive?

Schellas Hyndman: We need to see Eric Hassli’s true value

Along with Kenny Cooper, who was acquired in a trade on the same day, big things were expected from Eric Hassli when FC Dallas acquired him in a preseason trade with Toronto FC.

However, Hassli, who has one goal in his 14 games with FCD, has not delivered for a number of reasons. The biggest of those has been fitness.

Looking at Individual FCD Scoring Droughts

Seeing Matt Hedges find the back of the net in the 15th minute of Sunday's 3-3 draw with the LA Galaxy had to be immensely relieving for FCD, ending their franchise-record scoreless streak at 464 minutes. And Blas Perez had two of those three for Dallas. But that scoring outburst made this writer wonder when the last time some of the players we all expect to provide offense had scored?

Schellas Hyndman sees pulling Kenny Cooper out of first 11 as drastic move

3rd Degree at related • 0 views

After training on Tuesday morning in Frisco, FC Dallas head coach Schellas Hyndman did his customary post-training scrum with the leering press. And one of the questions asked of the Dallas gaffer was that with FCD currently stuck in a nine-game winless streak and having not scored in five straight games, a franchise record if a drastic change was in order to reverse the club's fortunes in fairly short order.

The Fernando Clavijo Scorecard

And while some of these additions can be directly credited to him, others cannot. But for the sake of conversation, here is a list of everyone who has been added under the former Rapids head coach:

Hassli Suspended by MLS Disciplinary Committee; Clavijo Surprised by Ruling

When FC Dallas travels to CenturyLink Field to face Seattle Sounders FC a week from Saturday, FCD head coach Schellas Hyndman won't have Eric Hassli available for selection. That's because Hassli, who has one assist in 14 games, was handed a one-game suspension by the MLS Disciplinary Committee on Tuesday for his hard foul on Montreal's Davy Arnaud in a 0-0 draw with the Impact on Saturday at Stade Saputo.

Five Questions Revisited

3rd Degree at related • 0 views

At the start of this season, I asked five questions which could prove crucial in determining what sort of season FC Dallas puts together in 2013. Well, now that the season is several games past the halfway point, I felt it was time to revisit those questions.

How much of an adjustment will the 4-4-2 be at least early on?

It wasn't all that long ago that FC Dallas striker Eric Hassli was being bothered by a back issue. However, over the past few weeks, the French-born forward has been fine, something which FCD head coach Schellas Hyndman alluded to after training on Thursday.

George John and Zach Loyd Questionable for Philly Game

When the game notes packet that is sent to the media prior to each match during the regular season arrived in my inbox on Thursday afternoon prior to FC Dallas' Saturday trip to Philadelphia, there were three familiar names on the list in Eric Hassli (back), George John (hamstring) and Zach Loyd (groin).

Would FCD have been better served going after Conor Casey instead of Eric Hassli?

3rd Degree at related • 0 views

Watching last Sunday's game between the New York Red Bulls and Philadelphia Union at PPL Park and seeing Union striker Conor Casey net a pair in a 3-0 win, one couldn't help but think about what it might have taken to put Casey in an FC Dallas uniform this past off-season?

This discussion is of course relevant because FCD's next match in league play will come on Saturday afternoon against the Union at their scenic venue on the banks of the Delaware River in Chester.

No matter the subject, one of the better quotes on FC Dallas is none other than French-born striker Eric Hassli. Of course, the veteran forward missed Saturday's 2-2 draw with Sporting Kansas City due to a back issue. However, Hassli now appears to be at 100 percent and ready to contribute in Wednesday's quarterfinal match with Portland in the Lamar Hunt U.

FCD Trying to Find Roots of Eric Hassli’s Back Issue

Considering that Blas Perez had just returned from his stint with the Panamanian national team on Thursday, it wasn't all that shocking to see FC Dallas head coach Schellas Hyndman not put Perez in the first 11 for Saturday's match with Sporting Kansas City.

And Perez came on for Fabian Castillo in the second half and played quite well when paired up with Kenny Cooper up top.

So, your team is away at the league's most imposing location. An amazing singsongy crowd, a tree being chain sawed into the world's largest drink coasters and a plastic pitch the size of a Texas cow patty ...

...Oh and your team is literally without a striker. What do you do?

For a guy who is regularly criticized as "too defensive minded" Schellas Hyndman did the exact opposite most every other team would have done in this situation.

D.C. United lost yet again, this time to FC Dallas, in the same way that they have lost most of their games this season: giving up an early goal and then being forced to chase the rest of the game. Eric Hassli was impressive in draw with Portland

One of the positives to come from FC Dallas losing central attacking midfielder David Ferreira to a hamstring injury early in the second half of Wednesday's 1-1 draw with Portland is that veteran striker Eric Hassli, who came on for Ferreira, got his first significant action of the season off the bench.

Reviewing the contract status of the FCD roster

With FC Dallas' 2013 season all but over, it's time to discuss the current contract status of the entire FCD roster, which this writer did with club technical director Fernando Clavijo on Tuesday morning during training.

Lots of interesting points including the idea that a 2014 FC Dallas could very well be one without David Ferreira, Kenny Cooper, Jair Benitez, Jackson, Michel and Andrew Jacobson.

Jonathan Top not an option to start vs. Vancouver

3rd Degree at related • 0 views

With Kenny Cooper suspended, Eric Hassli's back remaining an issue and Blas Perez away with the Panamanian national team, it appears that FC Dallas is considerably thin at striker heading into Saturday's visit from the Vancouver Whitecaps. But with Hassli's back supposedly improved to the point where he could play this weekend, that at least gives FCD head coach Schellas Hyndman one experienced option up top against Vancouver.

Well, Eric Hassli didn't remain without a club for very long at all. The former FC Dallas striker signed with the San Antonio Scorpions of the NASL on Tuesday. Hassli and FCD had mutually agreed to part ways on March 7 after the 32-year-old forward couldn't get healthy during preseason, largely due to ongoing back issues.
