After each match the contributors to New England Soccer Today will rate the performances of the New England Revolution players who made an appearance on a 1 to 10 scale (1 horrendous, 5 average, 10 perfection).
It was another disappointing road result for the Revs tonight as they fell 2-1 to the Chicago
Fire, bringing their 2012 record to 6-13-5 with still only one road win on the season. Meanwhile,
with tonight's result the Fire sit comfortably in 3rd place in the Eastern Conference standings and
look more than ready to extend their campaign into the post-season.
James Weber (Hartford) continues to make an impact for Swedish club Gullringens
GoIF.
The 19-year-old striker, who opted to forego his final three seasons of college eligibility and
sign with the fifth-division side, scored a 44th-minute equalizer as Gullringens tied host IK
Östria Lambohov 1-1 in a Division 3 Nordöstra Götaland match Saturday.
During the second half of Israel's friendly against Hungary on Wednesday, Israel keeper Dudu
Aouate played a game of chicken against Hungary striker Adam Szalai and nobody won. Aouate decided
to be proactive with a long ball that could've set Szalai up for a one-v-one and sprinted to the
edge of the box to head it away.
Frem goalkeeper Jakob Kohler proved to his his side's secret weapon in a Danish Second Division
East (the third tier of Danish football) match against Birkerod. In the 92nd minute, with Birkerod
up 1-0, Kohler came forward for Frem's last-ditch effort to equalize off a corner kick.
After the ball was headed away from goal and a Frem shot was blocked by a defender, Kohler
executed a beautiful overhead kick off the deflection and, to the surprise of everyone, scored an
equalizer.
The Portland Timbers may be doing too little, too late to help the team's chances of making a
playoff run in 2012, but another commendable effort suddenly has the once-struggling Timbers slowly
turning things around.
Bright Dike slotted home a Sal Zizzo cross just before halftime to give the Timbers all they
needed to squeeze out a 1-0 victory against the faltering Colorado Rapids.
Marouane Fellaini rose above make-shift center-half Michael Carrick to head home the night's
only goal twelve minutes into the second half and propel Everton to a famous win over Manchester
United.
United, whose costly 4-4 draw against the Toffees last season played a major part in their title
defeat to bitter rivals Manchester City, once again met a Toffees side that was ready for a fight
at Goodison Park.
Pepe had to spend a night in the hospital after a ugly collision with Iker Casillas as Valencia
scored their 42nd minute equalizer against Real Madrid. Pepe, Casillas and Xabi Alonso all collided
as Jonas headed in a free kick, with the goalkeeper and defender getting the worst of it.
All three played on -- Pepe with a head wrap -- but the Portuguese usually known for inflicting
pain on opponents had to be taken off at halftime after complaining of dizziness and was eventually
taken to the hospital for the night.
It may not have been the way they envisioned it, but Manchester City earned an impressive win in
their first game of the season as they opened their defense of the Premier League title in dramatic
style.
City came back from a goal down to defeat newly promoted Southampton, 3-2, at Etihad Stadium
with goals from Carlos Tevez, Edin Dzeko, and Samir Nasri.
Manchester City kicked off the 2012-13 with a come from behind victory over Chelsea in the
Community Shield. The match is the start of the English season with the EPL winners taking on the
FA Cup champions.
Man City started out on the front foot with decent chances for Carlos Tevez and a Sergio Aguero
while Chelsea's Eden Hazard tested the goalkeeper with a bouncing shot from long range.
It finally looked as if the Minnesota Stars FC's luck had turned against Canadian rivals FC
Edmonton. For the majority of the 90 minutes, the Stars preserved a one goal lead in hopes of
winning their first game since July. Not only would then win end the monotony of draws and losses,
but it would [.
If the Ft. Lauderdale Strikers were hoping to end August on a strong note, they did just that by
defeating the league-leading San Antonio Scorpions this past weekend.
The Strikers topped the Scorpions, 2-1, in front of 3,268 fans at Lockhart Stadium on Saturday
courtesy of two second-half strikes from Abe Thompson.
KINGSTON, Jamaica-- Just three weeks after making history by winning in Mexico for the first
time, the U.S. team made history again, only it was the kind they definitely didn't want to
make.
Jurgen Klinsmann had to know his U.S. team would be in for a tough night without a handful of
key veterans, but he also has to know that his teams chances of leaving Jamaica with a point or
three were going to hinge on his roster and lineup selections.
For a second straight month, Jurgen Klinsmann and the U.S. men's national team made history, but
this time the result was not one they wish to remember.
Weeks after beating Mexico for the first time at Azteca Stadium in a friendly, the United States
resumed their World Cup qualifying campaign by suffering a 2-1 loss to Jamaica at National Stadium
in Kingston, Jamaica on Friday night.
KINGSTON, Jamaica -- A visit to Independence Park, otherwise known as ‘The Office,' for a game
against the Jamaican national team isn't really an intimidating experience for opposing teams. If
anything, the loud reggae music and female dance squads that entertain fans give national team
matches a party-like atmosphere.
The U.S. Men's National Team takes on Jamaica in World Cup qualifying on Friday and with stars
Landon Donovan and Michael Bradley set to miss out, Jurgen Klinsmann will have some important
decisions to make on how he shapes his lineup without those two stars.
Without Donovan and Bradley, and potentially without Clint Dempsey, the U.
Moussa Dembele's undoubted moment of genius was the only redeeming feature in an otherwise
rather insipid, dull, and lethargic Spurs side that was hard pressed keeping away an industrious
and well organized Norwich side.
The former Fulham midfielder scored a goal on debut showing his class in the 68th minute as he
used some nifty footwork and a cool finish to frustrate an enterprising Norwich side who had plenty
of chances of their own.
The Montreal Impact took a 1-0 lead on the Columbus Crew in their important Eastern Conference
clash on Saturday, but in a scene that Crew fans have become all too familiar with in recent weeks,
Federico Higuain drove the Columbus attack to a victory.
Emilio Renteria headed home a Higuain cross in second-half stoppage time to lift the Crew to a
2-1 victory at Crew Stadium on Saturday night.
Michael Bradley's first season with Roma has hit its first speed bump.
According to Italian publication Gazzetta Dello Sport, Bradley suffered a muscle strain in his
right leg and will be out for Roma's trip to Inter Milan this weekend. There is no timetable given
for his return, and the injury will be monitored in the coming days, so it is unclear how it will
affect his standing for the U.
We are six weeks into the Apertura 2012 in Liga MX, and we're finally starting to see a few
teams separate themselves in the league table. While some have risen, others have fallen and now
we're starting to see the normal carousel of managers Mexican fans are accustomed too. Three
managers are out of work and there are a few more that are walking thin lines.
FC Barcelona and Getafe both won while Sevilla and Valencia had to settle for draws in the
Spanish Primera Division (La Liga) on August 26, 2012.
Osasuna 1-2 FC Barcelona
Barcelona trailed at halftime but rallied with a brace from Lionel Messi. Osasuna defeated
Barcelona last season and looked ready for a repeat as Joseba Llorente scored in the 17th
minute.
Motherwell were held at home by St Mirren and Hearts remained unbeaten with a draw at Aberdeen
in the Scottish Premier League matches on August 26, 2012.
Aberdeen 0-0 Hearts
Hearts continued their unbeaten record in the new season with a clean sheet at the Pittodrie
Stadium. Aberdeen were the stronger side in the beginning as Hearts looked a bit lethargic
following their loss to Liverpool in the Europa League.
After a shaky last week, the San Antonio Scorpions solidified themselves as the cream of the NASL
crop. With a dominating 4-0 win over the second place Tampa Bay Rowdies, the Scorpions have
clinched at least a playoff spot with 6 games left in their schedule.
Lyon thrashed Troyes at home, Bastia defeated Reims, Lorient edged Montpellier, and Toulouse beat
St Etienne in the French Ligue 1 on August 18, 2012.
Lyon 4-1 Troyes
Lyon moved on top of the league table with a strong victory. Troyes actually had a 1-0 lead with
a 47th minute goal but Lyon responded with two goals in a 15 minute span.
Huh. Where did all the goals go? Did the heat wave finally get to everyone? Did every team suddenly
start signing better defensive players(Hint: No)? To put this into perspective, more goals were
scored in ONE game last week than were scored by all the teams this week, which even included an
extra midweek game!
That was certainly not how the Seattle Sounders imagined this week going. Losing to both
Sporting Kansas City and the San Jose Earthquakes would have been bad enough, but doing it in the
way they did makes it almost unfathomable.
The more depressing loss was the penalty shootout on Wednesday, but the way the Sounders lost
2-1 on Saturday was just pouring salt on the wound.
szólj hozzá: Liverpool vs Man City 2:2 GOALS HIGHLIGHTS
Martin Skrtel was responsible for three of the four goals scored today at Anfield in an
engrossing match. Liverpool went ahead as Skrtel attacked a corner throwing himself at the ball and
absolutely buried the ball past Joe Hart.
In the second half, Roberto Mancini introduced Jack Rodwell which allowed Yaya Toure to roam up
front.
Even Gary Cahill admits as much. That goal turned the tables on Reading as goalie Federici was
sent upfield for a corner in a desperate search for the equalizer. It left him stranded while
Chelsea made its breakaway move for the fourth and final goal.
A brace from Altidore was good for a point at the ArenA. He had the equalizer and the go-ahead in
the 48th and 50th minutes to give the Cheese Farmers an opening-day draw against the defending
champs. His first came after he collected a long diagonal ball down the left, beat Toby
Alderweireld off the dribble, held off Gregory Van Der Wiel and shelfed his shot from the six like
it was his job.
The Los Angeles Galaxy's opening match of the 2012-2013 CONCACAF Champions League tournament had
just about everything one could ask for.
The Galaxy got goals from its star players, but had to weather some questionable officiating
late in the second half which featured a red card to Robbie Keane and a yellow card right in the
midst of a substitution.
For the first time in their brief MLS History Portland has scored 2 away goals and not only have
did they score two but one of them was a late equalizer. With all that said there were not that
many players to choose from for Man of the Match honors as quite a few players had pretty poor
performances, so let's see who the writers thought was their MOTM.
The Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger bought the French Ligue 1′s top scorer last season, hoping to replace some of the 30 goals that Robin Van Persie provided last season, but the ex-Montpellier hitman seems to be lacking in confidence in front of goal at the moment.
After a few blatant misses in early league games, Wenger decided to take the pressure of Giroud a bit by keeping him on the bench and unleashing him in the League Cup match against Coventry where he duly obliged by scoring the first goal.
With Toulouse down 2-1 to Stade Rennes late in added time, goalkeeper Ali Ahamada came forward on a free kick in an attempt to salvage a point at home. Ahamada ended up finding space in the box and managed to execute an off-balance backwards header to score an equalizer in the 95th minute.
Ahamada then celebrated like the happiest man on earth, scrambling to his feet, hoping over the advertising board and embracing a group of joyful supporters.
In the first half of Sunday's 1-1 draw with Seattle Sounders FC, FC Dallas midfielder Jackson
delivered another goal for his side, the equalizer after the visitors had gone ahead thanks to a
nice sequence from Seattle's Steve Zakuani and Mauro Rosales in the 20th minute. Jackson's tally
was clearly a case of him being in the right place at the right time and capitalizing on the
opportunity, something he's done quite well during his time with Dallas.
The second Clasico in as many weeks takes place at Estadio Santiago Bernabeu, where Real Madrid
will attempt to overturn a 3-2 deficit to bitter rival Barcelona in the second leg of the Spanish
SuperCopa (4:30 p.m., ESPN3.com/ESPN Deportes).
Barcelona battled back for the opening-leg win after Cristiano Ronaldo opened the scoring in the
second half last Thursday, getting an equalizer from Pedro a minute later that was followed by
consecutive goals from Lionel Messi and Xavi.
Both Cruzeiro and Atletico-MG had a player sent off in the 58th minute of their Brasileiro match
on Sunday. Half an hour later, with the score at 1-1, Atletico-MG were reduced to nine men with the
match's third sending off. And a minute after that, Ronaldinho made a run from the midway line and
after beating the same defender twice (once at midfield and again in the box), he put the ball just
inside the far post to give Atletico a 2-1 lead.
Neymar played six matches in 14 days during Brazil's disappointing silver-medal run at the
Olympics. Four days after that he went to Sweden to play 83 minutes of a friendly and a little more
than day after that he was back in Brazil leading Santos to a 3-1 win over Figueirense.
From Reuters:
The spikey-haired forward hired a private jet to take him from Stockholm to Florianopolis, a
14-hour trip, to try and help his struggling side revive their Brazilian championshipÂ
fortunes.
