Placenta therapy: Will it work for Van Persie?

Soccerblog 17 November @ 09:55 PM EST

Robin Van Persie flew today to Belgrade to meet with Marijana Kovacevic, a Serbian housewife who uses fluid from horse placenta to massage injured tissues enabling it to heal faster. At least that is what many footballers using her treatment claim.

RVP did not seem to know much about her or the therapy:

"She is vague about her methods but I know she massages you using fluid from a placenta," he said.

Another Arsenal injury: Kieran Gibbs

Soccerblog 17 November @ 08:16 PM EST

Gibbs limped off with an ankle injury after a 12st minute tackle forced him out of the U21 Euro match against Lithuania. He is to undergo an X ray as a precautionary measure and more information on the extent of his injury will be available later this week.

With Gael Clichy out for a month with a back injury, the left back position was a lock for Gibbs.

Van Persie injury update: Partial ruptured ankle ligament

Soccerblog 15 November @ 07:27 PM EST

RVP's convalescence time has been reduced to 4-6 weeks, less than the two months feared. He has a partial tear of the ankle ligament. A Dutch official said it was not a fracture but there was still significant ankle damage.

"It's impossible to put an exact time frame on it because some players heal more quickly than others.

Van Persie feared out for at least "two months"

Soccerblog 14 November @ 11:27 PM EST

As an Arsenal fan, this is disastrous news.

RVP is feared to have torn his ankle ligaments as he went down after a heavy challenge from Giorgio Chiellini in the Italy vs Netherlands friendly. He is undergoing an ankle scan in the Netherlands to ascertain the exact damage.

Wenger must be going out of his mind.

More flak for Ferguson..

Soccerblog 14 November @ 09:47 PM EST

To add insult to injury Sir Alex will now be compelled to give interviews to the BBC or face disciplinary action. He has not been on speaking terms with the BBC since 2004 when Panorama ran a documentary which portrayed his son, Jason, an agent, as using his father's status to gain influence in the transfer market.

The referees call foul: Sir Alex gets a four match ban

Soccerblog 13 November @ 12:20 AM EST

A smart Alex.

Sir Alex Ferguson was given a four match touchline ban and a fine for 20,000 pounds following his attack on Alan Wiley's fitness. But the referees union is still baying for evermore blood. Here is Alan Leighton of Prospect, the referees union.

"From our point of view it is disappointing.

Robinho does not want to "spend another day" at City

Soccerblog 12 November @ 12:03 AM EST

The carpet bagger wants to leave but an angel waits in the wings.

Something about Brazilian music not being good enough for the neighbours.

Mark Hughes seems to be doing a good job of getting rid of all the Brazilians in the team. Elano, Jo, and now Robinho. We can also look forward to the African clique, Adebayor and Kolo Toure, being broken up.

Birmingham was hard done by Peter Walton's decision to award a PK after the French striker went down in the box from a tackle by Lee Carsley. Problem was Carsley never touched him. Steven Gerrard subbing for the injured Riera converted the penalty and Liverpool scraped a draw.

Drogba exacts his revenge and Man Utd fall

Soccerblog 08 November @ 01:19 PM EST

Chelsea 1 Man Utd 0 at Stamford Bridge.

Not exactly classy football but Man Utd was the team with better ideas and creativity. It also unfortunately had more loose cannons, specifically, Jonny Evans.

In fact, Evans provided a menace that the Chelsea attack had a hard time mustering.

Video: Arsenal take Wolves to the woodshed, 4-1

Soccerblog 07 November @ 07:17 PM EST

Arsenal dance with Wolves.

An own goal by Ronald Zubar gets things rolling. A fine steal by Song puts Aaron Ramsey through as he and Eduardo race ahead. Ramsey passes to Eduardo as they cut off Josh Craddock and then waits for the return because of his clear look at goal. Instead, Eduardo chips the ball over and it deflects of Craddock and loops over Wayne Henessey for the second goal.

A bit before the Chelsea vs Man Utd match

Soccerblog 07 November @ 08:56 AM EST

Drogbalicious.

He takes over everybody
Sinewy hard, on a goal scoring spree

He gallops on the field, on a tear

He is on his way to critical mass
A nuclear weapon laid bare

And underneath his shorts
He turns on twin burners in his arse

He makes Rio look flabby

Silvestre now that was one bemused chappie,

Chelsea are losing, Ancelotti wears a frown

Jose looks a bit Sourinho

Drogba scores two, turns it upside down

We have seen it before, in the FA, CL, and the Prem

I hate to have to say it but Drogba is a s**tstain

(all players except those from Chelsea)
Drogba makes us look like muppets

(one player)
I'd like to say worse:
He gives me gas

(all fans except those from Chelsea weep)

(all fans except those from Chelsea)
He makes us sick to the stomach that Drogba
He gives us gas and it's not the beer we chug
He makes us look like muppets that Drogba

(Sung to "How do you solve a problem like Maria" from the Sound of Music)

An open letter to Arsene

Soccerblog 06 November @ 09:05 PM EST

Dear Arsene,

Praise is good but it should be meaningful. Robin Van Persie is having a fantastic season but to say he is the best striker in the Premiership is jumping the gun. Didier Drogba will have some words on that. Comparing Van Persie to Dennis Bergkamp is definitely jumping the shark.

Kroenke cranks up the Arsenal stakes

Soccerblog 03 November @ 09:10 AM EST

Stan Koenke just bought up 427 more shares. His holding increases to 29.6%, less than a percentage point from the automatic trigger for a full offer for the club.

No knowing if the Denver Nuggets owner is planning a bid. But he still owes £50m for the shares that he bought from Danny Fiszman and the Carr family.

Welcome to my nightmare: Arsenal beat Spurs

Soccerblog 31 October @ 06:22 PM EST

"Welcome to my nightmare, welcome to my breakdown."

Alice Cooper's 1975 campy anthem sums up the last five minutes of the first half for Spurs.

Harry Redknapp probably regrets starting a clearly unfit Ledley King who has struggled with injuries this season. Sagna on the right whips in a cross which Van Persie reacts to more quickly, outmaneuvering King to turn the ball past Heurelho Gomes for the first goal in the 42nd minute.

Wenger might start Almunia

Soccerblog 30 October @ 02:14 AM EST

Against Spurs.

Lukasz Fabianski has re-injured himself and is out for three weeks. Vito Mannone looked far from reassuring against West Ham, and his mistake gifted a goal to Carlton Cole in a match that Arsenal should have won.

Which means Almunia might be back in favour.

Will Adam Pearson's arrival hasten Phil Brown's exit?

Soccerblog 29 October @ 12:25 AM EST

Phil Brown, ex manager and current suntan oil salesman?

The Independent says that Adam Pearson's shock arrival from Derby means that current chairman Andy Duffen and Phil Brown's biggest ally might be on his way out. If that happens then Brown's tenure at Hull is in danger. The abrasive Hull coach has had a unsettled relationship with some players and was booed by fans when he took off Stephen Hunt against Portsmouth.

A tale of two clubs: Newcastle settled, Pompey unsettled

Soccerblog 28 October @ 10:26 PM EST

In Family Guy:

Chris Griffin: Dad, was there ever a real city of New Orleans?"
Peter Griffin: "No one knows, Chris. No one knows."

It is interesting to see anyone and everyone walk into Pompey, buy up the club, and walk out two days later. The revolving door has led to Pompey being dead last in the Premiership, player wages being delayed, and transfer fees that have yet to be paid two years later.

Kroenke sweeps up more loose shares

Soccerblog 27 October @ 09:45 AM EST

Ten more shares bought for £8,500 per share as Stan Kroenke creeps up to 28.9%, a mere 1.09% away from the threshold where he can make an automatic bid for Arsenal.

Any such offer will have to be at a price not less than the highest price per share paid in the last 12 months, which was May 2009 when he bought 5000 shares which belonged to Clive and Richard Carr, and Sarah Phipps-Bagge for £10,500 per share.

Wenger: " We have to kill teams off'

Soccerblog 26 October @ 08:05 AM EST

Arseblog as usual gives an well balanced summation and my two cents is that the "killer instinct" message should be obvious by now. It cannot be emphasized enough but now it needs to be internalized. I also think it comes from a leadership vacuum on the pitch.

This season, most matches need at least two goals for padding.

Brilliant Benayoun sets up splendid Torres goal

Soccerblog 25 October @ 11:11 PM EST

By now, it must be obvious.

The best player in the Premiership on this day was Yossi Benayoun. No words can describe the moment of genius that possessed him to split the Man Utd defense, in so comprehensive a fashion as that pass that isolated Fernando Torres, a move which had Rio Ferdinand grab him futilely.

Sheesh! Every match Sir Alex gets 5 minutes of extra time?

While each fan will be watching his club play tomorrow, it will be the Liverpool vs Man Utd knockout that will occupy centerstage. It is all about establishing narratives.

The club that most pundits, including the Guardian, that oracle of footballing wisdom, picked to win the Premiership is faced with a situation where this win if it does happen, does not salvage its season as much as it gives hope that there is a kinder God.

Video: Spurs fall to Stoke, 0-1

Soccerblog 24 October @ 06:18 PM EST

Spurs plied on the pressure but an excellent Steve Simonsen and a dour Stoke defense kept them at bay. Crouch, Keane, Kranjcar, and Lennon tried and tried but all in vain. Twelve shots on goal, none that paid off. Stoke got two chances on goal as they were outclassed and on the second, Keane's Ireland team mate Glenn Whelan scored for Stoke.
