After leading since the hour mark courtesy of Jill Scott's looping 20-yard drive, England women
were within spitting-distance of making it through to the last four of the World Cup in Leverkusen
last night when they were pegged back by France with three minutes of normal time left to play when
Elise Bussaglia sent a superb curling effort clipping in off the upright in what seemed to be

Though the game itself was admittedly a little on the dull side, a brace of smartly-taken lobs
from Ellen White and substitute Rachel Yankey were enough to see England Women see off Japan in
Augsburg yesterday evening, with the victory securing top-spot in Group B for Hope Powell's side
and thus landing them a quarter-final tie against France in Leverkusen on Saturday.

England Women got their World Cup campaign underway with a slightly disappointing 1-1 draw
against Mexico in Wolfsburg yesterday afternoon going ahead through Fara Williams' looping
21st-minute header before being pegged back just 13 minutes on down the line thanks to a bit of a
special effort from Monica Ocampo.
Channelling the spirit of Rob Green If the England Under 21s' European Championship campaign bore
similarities to the senior squad's last international tournament opening, yesterday's opening match

Well, not quite. I'm not talking about the men, I'm talking about the women. Hope Powell's
England women's side has quietly been making great strides in the international arena, though you
probably wouldn't have heard given the lack of coverage and focus that the national media places on
women's sport in general.
