Tottenham fans would have tuned in to last weekend's London derby at Upton Park in the hope of
witnessing two things –
- A defeat for the home side
- A solid performance from Harry Kane
Sadly we got neither with Harry starting the game on the subs' bench along with Ryan Mason but
both players got a full 90 minutes under their belt as Millwall saw off the challenge of
Southampton in last night's FA Cup replay.
how appropriate
Happy mad-libbing!

Robin van Persie and his wife, Bouchra, were at Downing Street to meet British Prime Minister,
David Cameron earlier this week. Robin is the ambassador of football youth charity 'Street League',
which encourages education and football programmes for young people to develop skills they can
later use in the working world.
Elite coaching is an art.
This is my response to reader John, who left an excellent set of comments. The last of which
I'll address here.
Specifically:
I'd love to see you talk about specific tactics, Gary. I have no doubt that you are very a
bright guy, but I wish you'd share your knowledge with us.
Foreign players should know about UK stance on racism Taylor
Professional Footballers' Association chief executive Gordon Taylor tells BBC Radio 5 live that
education may be needed for overseas players who come to the UK about "what is acceptable on and
off the pitch".
Should they be playing up?
Oh how everyone talks as if they know what "development" is, and how to do it. Sigh ...
Let's talk a little bit about "playing up" and whether it helps or not.
This weekend our U11′s are going to play in a U12 tournament. This isn't the first time
competing up either.
The United Nations x Shipwrecked Footballers?
Let Didier Drogba, Luis Figo, Ronaldo, Zizou and even Michael Ballack teach you about the
Millennium Development Goals in a manner that I really hope, for everyone's sake, was intended to
be overflowing with sarcasm. It's a 32-page comic teaching about the United Nations' MDGs set for
2015 through the form of top footballers being shipwrecked and having to deal with real life
issues, like living a day without Sara Carbonero.
"We've made good progress in the last 20 years."
Yes we have, and we should all be happy for it.
However, it's easier going from 40% to 70%, than it is from 70% to 100%.
The first jump involves broad strokes. You know, the "common sense" stuff.
The second jump involves the details.
Rafa Marquez and his gorgeous wife Jaydy Michel (she's even more stunning in person, trust us)
attended a charity gala which benefitted Casita Maria, a center of arts and education for
underprivileged youth. The event, seen by some as the unofficial 'kick off' to the New York Social
season, was hosted by the zippy stylist, Robert Verdi, at famed NYC hotel, the Mandarin
Oriental.
Here's the glorified-public access profile on Detroit-bred Molde striker Josh Gatt that we've all
been asking for. All jokes aside, I know precious little about this kid other than what I read in
random yet seemingly regular tweets when scores so I, for one, could use the education.
Also please try to make it to the end of this clip if you can because the sign off is absolutely
classic.
What follows is an initial list of 25 things obstructing the US from becoming a soccer
powerhouse.
The "what's wrong" topic is always around and maintains a certain level of attention. Then, when
our national teams flounder, the topic spikes and dominates the discussion.
And of course everyone and their mom has an opinion.
Wales and Cardiff striker Robert Earnshaw believes that racism is still rife in English football,
but insists that Liverpool F.C forward Luis Suarez is innocent until proven guilty.
Earnshaw, who revealed that he has 'experienced racist abuse loads of times...even at certain
grounds in this country', said:
"It's hard to comment [on the Evra-Suarez incident] because both players have their opinions and it
might be crossed wires, we just don't know.
Chesterfield United FC parents David and Sarah Glass have recently returned to the country after a
life changing trip to Kenya, Africa. They went to Africa in coalition with the Start With One Kenya
project that is a non-profit organization that believes in individuals taking the step to join
forces with other people to create the lasting change the world needs.
Javier Castrilli a.k.a. "El Sheriff"
There has been plenty of talk as to referees essentially dictating style of play. Not just of
one game, but on entire leagues and at all levels. The implication is that this has direct
influence on a coach's player selections and the style of play he implements.
Perhaps Chamakh will draw confidence from this, what can our team draw from?
Another tough weekend for Arsenal and Gooners alike. Defeat to Blackburn was not what the doctor
ordered especially given our fragile start to our season. Defensive frailties again coming to the
fore but that's not the only concern.
The Revs 101 Challenge
The New England Revolution have teamed up with Discovery 101 to launch a month-long effort of
education through soccer and fundraising for local youth soccer programs. Check it out and see how
you can contribute.
Are they the best?
In his last post, Jacques posed an interesting question:
Is it acceptable/effective to select experienced players with incomplete skill sets and little
tactical malleability? Or, is the system Klinsmann seeks to implement better served by selecting
players with less pedigree but with skill sets better suited to succeed in a possession based
system?
Watch Thai schoolkids' amazing tribute to Joe Ledley, Joey Barton 'coming in your face'
and the Posnan dog!
Presenting quality football videos from the interweb, daily at 3pm. Here's today's collection:
1) If ever there was a video to warm the hearts of the most miserable football fan, then this is it
The children of Triamsuksa School in Thailand have produced a piece of YouTube gold with this
brilliant tribute to, of all people, Celtic midfielder Joe Ledley.
Today marks 2 years of 3four3!
When I first started, the idea was really just to get my thoughts on paper, flesh them out and
refine them over time. I thought I would systematically deconstruct all the issues I saw with the
sport in the U.S., and methodically build up solutions.
Kenny relishing Euro challenge
Liverpool's youngsters go under the spotlight at Anfield on Wednesday night when they take on
Sporting Lisbon in their first game of the NextGen Series, with Kenny Dalglish insisting it will be
an invaluable education for them.

While the young people of Spain continue to protest on the streets against the country's
manifest political corruption, Sporting Gijon defender Javi Poves has taken a moral stand turning
his back on the club and quitting football altogether aged 24, after spending too long in direct
contact with the game's grubby underbelly.

Liverpool Reserves recently enjoyed a two-day workshop aimed at enhancing their conduct as
professional footballers - both on and off the pitch.
The young Reds retreated to a secluded hotel in the Lake District where they listened to a variety
of presentations as well as taking part in some good-natured team building exercises.
World Cup champ, Euro champ, Germany 2006 coach, Bayern Munich, blah, blah, blah.
Looks great from 10,000 feet, huh? That's the resume/pedigree trap. Don't fall into it, because
it loves to claim victims.
Hopefully it's understood by now that sparkling player resumes don't correlate with quality
coaching.
This is the first of a multi-part series I'm doing on Klinsmann. I want to stay focused and
only talk about one specific theme per post.
Now is the time to clearly set up expectations. Be specific!
What should his charter be?
I've stated this before, but let me repeat not only what I think is achievable, but what
everyone should be in line with.

I want to take this opportunity to inform our newest readers that not only can this site be
blunt at times, but there may be sparse usage of profanity as well.
I'm certain some people find this outrageous or just off-putting and that's ok. This is simply
my way of saying this blog is probably not for you, and it might be best to unsubscribe.
Austin Hart (front row, 2nd from left) and Reid Harbach (back row, 4th from left)
Austin Hart (Springfield SC, Glendale) and and Reid Harbach (Springfield SC, Catholic) are two of
six players on the Missouri State 94 Boys ODP team who were selected for the Region 2 94 Boys
regional team pool.
hmmm...
I don't know if real accountability for player development is possible.
What are the metrics?
- Is it how many players you place in college?
- Is it the number that get called to youth national teams?
- Is it the number of professionals you've touched while they were amateur?
What are the expectations? That is key.
I think people are getting it confused. Hiring a manager who actually has a clue will not get us
the World Cup final, and perhaps not the quarters this cycle either.
That is not the discussion we should be having. That is not the appropriate metric to use.

In which Gerard Pique and his lovely missus touch down in the Holy Land in order to visit the

After watching how Barcelona passed the ball around the midfield at Wembley a few weeks ago, Tom
Cleverley is determined to use the example set by the likes of Andres Iniesta and Xavi and Pedro to
improve his own game.
"As a United player and fan it wasn't a great experience at Wembley but as part of my education
it was a massive lesson for me," he said.
The never-ending saga of Arsene Wenger's pursuit of the Southampton starlet Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain
has finally come to an end. The Daily Mirror has revealed today that Arsenal have finished
negotiating with the Southampton board and Chamberlain has agreed personal terms to continue his
education at the Emirates.
3four3 gives you a thumbs up too man
Let's get something straight right off the bat: Dempsey is a quality player. He is one of the
few worthy of representing our country. He has a good touch, a good brain, and is highly valuable
to his club. But World Class?
I know we want one of these badly, but people are reaching and trying to rationalize someway to
place that label on one of our guys.
Tottenham are facing battles to retain players throughout the squad and while all the news seems
to pertain to Luka Modric today, there are rumours that Spurs will be offering new deals to the two
Kyles – Walker and Naughton – in an attempt to warn off potential suitors.
Both players impressed last season while on loan and both of their host clubs, Aston Villa and
Leicester City respectively were rumoured to be preparing bids.
Tiki-taka vs ???
There are factors beyond the individuality of players that shouldn't go unrecognized. And this
Champion's League final offers a good backdrop for illustrating the point.
Barca has the support of an entire philosophy behind them. A very clear and precise way of
playing that has been engrained and rehearsed over years into oblivion.

Just a quickie to start the day, with the news that Kolo Toure will miss the start of next
season after being handed a six-month ban for testing positive during a post-Manchester derby
drug's test back in February later admitting that he took his wife's diet pills in order to hit a
weight-loss target set by the club.
How do you know a coach is any good at player development? I'm specifically addressing those
coaches who are implicitly chartered with that goal.
Well, here it is:
1) The coach must have a clearly possession based style.
2) The coach must be a winning one.
Sorry guys, you'll have to wait to be known - if ever.
I'm a bit late to the U20 topic, but this is not a news outlet; it is an education outlet.
In case you're not up to speed, we lost to Guatemala and were eliminated from the U20 World Cup
for the first time in 8 cycles.
Pepe's red card challenge
The so-called diving.
The exagerations.
The ref badgering.
Most of you complain about it and the players that are most notorious for it.
But this is what happens when a team, in this case Madrid, decides it does not want to play
straight up.
