Oguchi Onyewu article in Sports Illustrated

28
Here is a link to a great article by Greg Lalas from Sports Illustrated about Oguchi Onyewu's success with Standard Liege in the Belgian League, and also the rumors that have surfaced about a move to a bigger club. I have always been very impressed with "Gooch" and felt that he would turn into a top class defender. Click to continue reading...

Bob Bradley compared to Bruce Arena

3
Here is an excellent article from Kartik Krishnaiyer on the MLS Talk blog that goes through the differences between the managing styles of Bruce Arena and Bob Bradley, and also provides some interesting thoughts on the recent callups that Bob Bradley has made for the U.S. National Team. For the most part, I agree with Kartik's column, but I disagree with the comments he made about Clint Dempsey. Click to continue reading...

Bradley vs Arena: Different Styles

2

Eddie Johnson and Brian Ching celebrate a goal against Barbados, the only game which a current US striker has scored a goal in the last 14 months for the national team.

Bob Bradley's tenure as United States National Team manager has gone about as well as can be expected: A CONCACAF Gold triumph, several victories in the "old world" and thus far a smooth run in qualifying including an elusive win over Guatemala.

Happy Tuesday

Wow, what a crazy holiday Monday in the world of international soccer. Man City gets a new owner and promptly outspends Roman Abromavich and Chelsea for Brazilian star Robinho. Man United goes ahead with the purchase of Dimitar Berbatov from Tottenham, allowing them to finalize two other signings and take a ManU player in on loan. Click to continue reading...

Should the Deuce Be Cut Loose?

0

The lone American goal scorer from World Cup 2006 now has consistently played so poorly for the national team if the opponent is not Barbados, that his presence seems to actually help stagnate the side. Dempsey's last good performance for the National Team against a decent opponent was last October in Switzerland.

Yanks Abroad: Weekend Recaps

10
Call it a new feature here on WVH, while I'm trying to maintain focus on the MLS playoff race; this is something I've been wanting to do for a while now, a focus on the Americans abroad in other leagues. I was going to debut this last week but honestly ran out of time early [...] Click to continue reading...

Eddie Johnson loaned to Cardiff

2
Another frustrating move by a European club with an American player as Fulham are loaning Eddie Johnson out to Cardiff City. Eddie Johnson barely had an opportunity to play for Fulham, having joined the team during the winter break last season as they were in the middle of a relegation battle. His chances to play were few and far between and now he will be going down to the English Championship League, which is one division lower then the Premiership. Click to continue reading...

EJ Out On Loan

5
U.S. international forward Eddie Johnson has been loaned out by Fulham to Championship outfit Cardiff City, the team announced today.Johnson, 24, made four appearances for Fulham (two starts) during the 2007-08 English Premier League season, failing to register a goal or assist in that time. He was not part of the club's 2-1 loss to newly-promoted Hull to open this season, but will hopefully see more playing time with the Bluebirds. Click to continue reading...

Eddie Johnson Loaned to Cardiff City

7
Apparently, Cardiff really wanted an American striker.  As reported earlier on YS, Eddie Johnson will be joining Cardiff City on a year long loan.  The move comes after Fulham have spent heavily on Offensive re-enforcements, and Johnson figured to be out of the picture for playing time. Fulham retain the option to call back Johnson in January, [. Click to continue reading...

Guatemala v. USA: Play time is over

27
We're not playing Barbados anymore, I don't think Guatemala has to put up ads looking for players on their federation website.

The semifinal round of CONCACAF qualifying begins tonight, with the US playing probably its most difficult game of the round first. Guatemala should advance with the US into the Hex, and this game will be a chance to gauge where both teams stand. Click to continue reading...

Kenny Cooper: What is Bob Bradley Thinking

11

Drawing Fouls and Creating Set Pieces: Eddie Johnson's usefulness?

For weeks, maybe months now all the buzz seems to be about Kenny Cooper's non selection to the National Team by Bob Bradley. I understand most in the blogosphere share my view that Cooper's selection for the national team should have been automatic by this point.

Fulham's Forgotten Men

21
As a supported from America, I've always had a soft spot for Fulham. With Brian McBride, Carlos Bocanegra, Clint Dempsey, Eddie Johnson, and Kasey Keller all previously (or currently) on their roster, Fulham is a squad that has always trusted and depended on American players.

McBride was Fulham's evergreen captain - the man who was always there to score that crucial goal. Click to continue reading...

Americans Abroad: Weekend Rewind

17

It is that time of year again. Time for European leagues to kick off and time for American players to ply their trade throughout Europe (and Mexico).

This week marked the first week for the English Premier League and German Bundesliga, meaning several names joined the list of Americans playing abroad.

Americans in England: Opening Week Jitters

14
In the wake of an unsure start to the season, Goal.com's Matthew Braine takes his first gander at the Yanks in England.

Eddie Johnson, Fulham
vs. Hull City: DNP
Johnson was not included on the substitutes list and depending on how the next few weeks pan out, we could see the striker either loaned out or playing for the reserves come September. Click to continue reading...

U.S. National Team - this is it???

12
Bob Bradley named the squad that is going to face Guatemala in the upcoming World Cup qualifier and while looking through the roster the question that comes to my mind is - don't we have a better team then this? Hasn't the time for Eddie Lewis, Frankie Hejduk, and Pablo Mastroeni come and gone? Who is being looked to as the main goalscorer - Landon Donovan? Click to continue reading...

Missing Persons Report: Kenny Cooper

3
OK.  This is starting to get ridiculous.  Kenny Cooper is the topic of numerous transfer rumors and now tops the MLS Golden Boot standings with 13 goals in 19 appearances that's 5 more than Brian Ching and 13 more than Eddie Johnson since his move to Fulham.  It's silly (although not surprising) that Cooper hasn't been [. Bob Bradley Calls Up 17 for World Cup Qualifier Against Guatemala

9
Bob Bradley has stunned us again failing to call up some players who have made a strong case to be on the US National Team.  Kenny Cooper is lighting up MLS and he doesn't get the call, it's just crazy.  Edson Buddle even deserved the call up over Eddie Johnson who might never play a [...] Click to continue reading...

Kenny Cooper ran over Bob Bradley's cat

Otherwise, I have no idea how he keeps getting left out of the US national team at this point. He's been an absolute BEAST in recent weeks in MLS, but doesn't get called up. Somehow, being Eddie Johnson is enough to keep getting called up, it doesn't matter how he actually performs in games.
