Columbus Crew 0-1 New York Red Bulls
The New York Red Bulls claimed top spot in the Eastern Conference with a narrow away victory over the Columbus Crew, thanks in large part to a standout performance from goalkeeper Luis Robles.
D.C. United is currentlyon a four-game losing streak and in spite of the offense finally coming to life in last weekend's 3-2 loss at home to the Philadelphia Union, the confidence that rode underdog United to the Eastern Conference finals last season has all but eroded. For most of United's dreadful start to the 2013 [.

In the late 1400s, some idiot Italian navigator, going against the scholarly consensus of his day, thought the distance from the Canary Islands to Japan was about 2300 miles.
I think it's safe to say that D.C. United's early season offensive production has been in a word... Offensive. One goal scored in three matches with only the 1-0 home opening win two weeks ago against Real Salt Lake being the only evidence that United has played some attacking soccer through three weeks of the [.

Marcelo Saragosa's 59th minute equalizer and Lewis Neal's 93rd minute go-ahead goal helped D.C. United clinch their first playoff berth since 2007 in their thrilling 3-2 win over the Columbus Crew last night at RFK Stadium.
It was a good week in MLS for playoff-bound forwards.
Fabian Espindola, Sherjill MacDonald and Chris Wondolowski are all key figures on teams heading into the MLS playoffs, and all three showed they are ready for post-season glory as they each turned in outstanding performances over the weekend.
Columbus Crew spoiled Sporting KC's Sunday by scoring in stoppage time. Here is the game recap via Sporting KC:
Sporting Kansas City drew 1-1 with the Columbus Crew on Sunday afternoon at Columbus Crew Stadium. C.J. Sapong put Sporting KC ahead in the 10th minute with a header for his eighth goal of the year and Graham Zusi's League-leading 15th assist, but the Crew's Eddie Gaven scored in the first minute of second-half stoppage time to split the points.
Sporting KC had an extra day to see the results around the league break down from last night and none of the results went KC's way. DC and Chicago both won closing the gap on KC at the top of the Eastern conference. Today, Sporting took on the Crew looking to build that lead back up and guarantee themselves a top 2 spot in the East and put themselves only 1 point away from clinching the East.
Much like they have done so often as of late, the Columbus Crew continued their recent run of finding a late goal. This time around, it was Eddie Gaven, who headed in the equalizing goal in the first minute of stoppage time to preserve a 1-1 draw with Sporting Kansas City, along with preserving Columbus' playoff hopes, as they remain one point behind the Houston Dynamo for the fifth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.
The Columbus Crew needed another late goal to put pressure on the teams ahead of them in the Eastern Conference playoff chase.
Eddie Gaven scored in the 91st minute to give the Crew a 1-1 draw against Sporting Kansas City. Sporting now trail the San Jose Earthquakes by five points in the Supporters' Shield race but hold a three point advantage for first in the conference.

The New England Revolution are about to take on the Columbus Crew tonight at Gillette in game
three of the season series between the two Eastern Conference originals. The last two didn't end
well for the Revs: an ugly 0-0 draw earlier in the season was followed up by a disappointing 4-3
away loss just about a week and a half ago.
There were 16,568 extremely angry people in Chester, Pennsylvania, last night. Eddie Gaven's 95th minute goal gave the 10-man Columbus Crew an almost unbelievable 2-1 victory against the Philadelphia Union on Wednesday. The Union scored first, but Columbus equalized before ... Continue reading →
CHESTER, Pa. -- Despite being down to ten men, and getting dominated in possession for large
parts of the second half, Eddie Gaven gave the Columbus Crew just what they needed to make up
ground in the ever-tightening Eastern Conference playoff race.

The Dynamo drew 2-2 with the Columbus Crew last night, coming back from a goal down late to
equalize and then holding on late as the Crew came close to becoming the first MLS team to win at
BBVA Compass Stadium. It wasn't the reaction match I was hoping for after last week's loss to New
York, but it's a point and the Dynamo offense looked sharp, especially in the first half.
The Columbus Crew were minutes away from handing the Houston Dynamo their first MLS defeat
inside of BBVA Compass Stadium, but a late Adam Moffat goal made sure to keep the Dynamo unbeaten
at home.
Moffat scored in the 82nd minute to help the Dynamo pick up a 2-2 draw with the Columbus Crew on
Sunday, a result that ties Houston with the Chicago Fire for third place in the Eastern
Conference.
If Real Salt Lake were planning to get out of the current funk that they are in versus the
Columbus Crew, they failed.
The Crew picked up a comfortable 2-0 win over RSL on Saturday night at Crew Stadium thanks to
first-half goals from Tony Tchani and Eddie Gaven.
Tchani knocked in his second in as many games with a low shot to the near post while Gaven hit a
left-footed effort from six yards out that smacked off the underside of the crossbar before
completely passing the goal line.

The Columbus Crew came into Gillette Stadium Saturday night with a plan and it worked. The Crew
packed the midfield with a tight, but fluid, 4-2-3-1 (4-3-2-1) formation and forced the New England
Revolution to play over the midfield instead of through it.

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – Despite each side creating some quality chances, a scoreless draw was on
tap at Gillette Stadium on Saturday night as the New England Revolution faced off against the
Columbus Crew in front 12,218.
The New England Revolution are resuming MLS action tomorrow against the Columbus Crew at
Gillette Stadium as they kick off a run of 12 matches in which 11 of their opponents will be
Eastern Conference foes. The Revs had last weekend off, but the weekend before that saw them
overcome the Chicago Fire in a decent 2-0 performance.
Week 12 in the MLS season was quite kind to the Columbus Crew.
Led by striker Emilio Renteria, the Crew came up with their first MLS win over former coach Sigi
Schmid in seven tries to defeat the Seattle Sounders 2-0 at CenturyLink Field before returning home
and topping the Chicago Fire 2-1 a few days later to win SBI MLS Team of the Week honors.
In a season that seemed to be shaping up almost perfectly, the Seattle Sounders have suddenly
made a habit of dropping points. They've now gone three straight without a win and while they are
still in fine position, it's not nearly as good as it was a couple weeks ago.
The loss to the Columbus Crew is easily the most frustrating of the bunch.
A couple weeks ago we started dropping in some of the gamethread tidbits that you miss on home
games because you are in the stadium. This is all the below the fold stuff, with some useful links

the matchups, statistics and tactics that are likely to influence who wins or loses the match.
CHESTER, Penn. --Â When the rosters for the 2012 MLS Combine were released earlier this year,
one name that drew attention was Ray Gaddis. But it was not for reasons you might initially think.Â

If there were any lingering doubts over Chris Pontius being able to return to the form he showed
before suffering a broken leg last season, he put those doubts to rest against the New York Red
Bulls.
Pontius inspired D.C. United to a big 4-1 victory over the New York Red Bulls on Sunday with the
first hat-trick of his career.
Former St. Louis Scott Gallagher Missouri player Will Bruin had one of his most productive Major
League Soccer performances this past weekend. The 11th overall selection of the 2011 MLS SuperDraft
for the first time recorded both a goal and an assist during the Houston Dynamo's 2-2 road draw
against the Columbus Crew on Saturday at Crew Stadium.
Jack McInerney's breakout season really took off in April, with a league-leading four goals during the month, good for the MLS lead and good for a spot on the SBI MLS Best XI for the Month of April.
It was the Eastern Conference filling out the two-game Wednesday schedule for Major League Soccer.
Columbus beat Toronto 2-1 in front of 10,049 at Crew Stadium. Eddie Gaven opened the scoring in the
4th minute for the home side, with Federico Higuain making it 2-0 in the 58th. Luis Silva scored
for Toronto in the 71st.
FC Dallas' Colombian connection has the club entering the playoff discussion after a horrid
stretch of play seemingly had the club closer to the Western Conference cellar than the postseason,
and it looks like David Ferreira and Fabian Castillo have no intentions of slowing down.
Ferreira and Castillo both played major roles in the club's road victories at Vancouver and Real
Salt Lake and were easy selections for SBI's MLS Best XI for Week 24.
If you told most D.C. United fans that Dwayne DeRosario and Hamdi Salihi would start the season
without a goal in the first seven matches they probably would have assumed a terrible start. Seven
weeks into the 2012 season, neither DeRosario or Salihi has a goal but Chris Pontius and Maicon
Santos have more than picked up the slack.

It turns out that the best defense isn't a good offense, after all.
After mounting an early-two goal lead, the Revolution defense conceded a season-high four goals
en route to a frenzied 4-3 defeat to the Crew on Saturday.

Toronto FC 1-1 New York Red Bulls
TFC's poor season continued with a draw after New York took an early lead. The point puts the
Red Bulls just behind Eastern Conference leaders DC United while Toronto are pretty much already
out of the playoff race.
Lost in the madness of the U.S. men's national team's start of World Cup qualifying, the MLS
international break and Euro 2012 is the fact that MLS All-Star voting has begun and is in full
swing.Â
The MLS All-Stars will take on UEFA Champions League and FA Cup winner Chelsea at PPL Park in a
little more than a month with an eye on snapping a three-game losing streak after a loss to Everton
(in penalties) and two losses to Manchester United.
Welcome to the New England Revolution vs. Columbus Crew live game thread. The Revs are set to
resume MLS play after a bye week and will be hoping to continue their winning ways established in
the 2-0 victory over Chicago two weeks back. Columbus has had a double bye, taking the last two
weekends off, but their last match was also a victory over Chicago: 2-1 back in May.
Voting for the MLS All-Star Game starters will begin on Friday, as the league released the list
of 114 players that will be on the ballot. Each team has six nominations, with one of them being a
goalkeeper.

Steve Ralston holds the record for most minutes played by an outfield player with over 33,000.
At 25, Eddie Gaven has just under 20,000 is primed to take over.
One of my primary complaints heading into the game last Saturday was the fact that I was simply
tired of writing the same stuff over and over again. Much to my delight then, the Portland Timbers
certainly did not fail to give me what I wanted as they drew Columbus here at home. Unfortunately,
a draw is still pretty disappointing, especially from a bottom dwelling Eastern Conference team
like Columbus.
