Scottish Premier League Match Predictions 11 February 2012 - The 90th Minute Soccer Blog
A week away from the blog.
I'd like to explain my absence with exciting tales of derring do. But I can't. The most excitement
I got was watching Hibs beat Kilmarnock in the Scottish Cup, nailbiting to the end.
No, I've been away largely because I couldn't be arsed for the last week.

Saturday 15th October 2011.
Celtic, fresh from a defeat at Tynecastle, are 3-0 down at half time to Kilmarnock.
Winning the title looks a long way off, Neil Lennon's managerial coat seems to hang on an ever
shooglier peg.
They came back to draw 3-3, three goals in a 10 minute burst from Anthony Stokes and Charlie
Mulgrew salvaging a point.
Today's SPL. All of our dirty dozen are in action. Here's a very quick look ahead.
St Mirren v Celtic
Ah, St Mirren. 2-1 up last week with their opponents down to ten men. They lost 5-2.
A season in 90 minutes. The promise, the impressive moments, the entertainment and the frequent
disappointments.
A January weekend to cast off the shackles of league pressure and revel in the romance of what is,
at this stage, the most egalitarian of our competitions.
A Scottish Cup weekend. Breathe in the fresh air of potential shocks and brace yourself butchers,
bakers and candlestick makers making SPL defences look like part-time amateurs.

That's it, keep it on the ground son, you're rubbish in the air
Scottish football is often criticised for its lack of technical quality and while this view is
often unfair, Aberdeen's Robert Milsom did little to silence the critics on Monday in the Dons' 2-1
win against Dundee United.
What is it about the festive season and Charlie Adam that don't go well? A missed penalty and an
own goal blighted this year's celebrations, while 12 months ago his failed transfer attempt to
Liverpool got the New Year off to a shaky start. And in January 2009 he was dealt a devastating
blow to his career when Rangers let him go.

Liverpool have entered the race to sign Dundee United midfielder Scott Allen in the January
transfer window, according to The Daily Mail.
Reds boss Kenny Dalglish is keen to sign the Scotland under 21 international, but will have to
fight off interest from Rangers, Celtic and West Brom. Rangers' boss Ally McCoist believed his side
was the favourite for the player, but Liverpool's interest leaves Allen's future up in the air.

Today's SPL Advent calendar throws up not a nugget of cheap chocolate but a Stewart's bridie -
current SPL basement dwellers Dunfermline.
The road to the SPL is not paved with gold.
On their return to the top flight Dunfermline find themselves bottom of the league. They've taken
only four points at home in a miserable run that has seen them fail to win at East End Park.
Is that a tangerine in your stocking or are you just pleased to see me? Through the great SPL
Advent calendar window today: Dundee United.
Consistency, as Motherwell's progress this season has shown, can work wonders in the SPL.
But it eludes three quarters of the league.

Per the offal: "Fulham FC can confirm that Keanu Marsh Brown has today left the Club by mutual
consent."
Never played a minute for the first team, but was on the bench for those memorable wins over
Shaktar, Juventus; a few other random Europa Games. Had a pretty productive spell at MK Dons the
second-half of last season, and even played a part in the Dons' playoff run.
Here it is then. The end.

OK.
It's been quite a 24 hours. I've confused myself with some of the debating angles I've taken.
Earlier Scott Johnston and I debated the Old Firm leaving Scottish football. As a wee bonus here's
Stewart Weir (@sweirz) with his take on the issue:
It's usually an argument made by those who don't support the Old Firm.
But if Celtic and Rangers (in alphabetical order only) departed Scotland and went elsewhere,
Scotland wouldn't have the Old Firm.
The blogathon continues. Alzheimer Scotland and the Homeless World Cup still need your help. So if
you've enjoyed any of this please give anything you can.
It's a pleasure to say a massive hello to Jay Mansfield, also know as @leftmidfielder, for this
hour of polite argument. Jay blogs here
Here's Jay on why Scottish football won't change:
Browsing Alzheimer Scotland's Football Memories site, I began to reminisce about the times I would
discuss the latest calamity to befall Scottish football (among other things) with my much-missed
grandfather.
A perfect 10. Or an imperfect 10. But I hope you're enjoying this so far.
So @sweirz has set me this challenge on Twitter:
A Scotland international XI made up of players that have never played for the Old Firm. And no
Anglos.
So Scotland players drawn exclusively from non-Old Firm Scottish clubs.
After battling through a round of midweek Europa League contests, the Americans in Europe took on
teams in their respecitve domestic leauges. Here is a recap of this weekend's games.
Jozy Altidore started and played 86 minutes in AZ Alkmaar's 3-0 victory against
ADO Den Haag in the Dutch Eredivisie, and the side remains at the top of the table by a margin of
five points.
After two successful seasons together in Carolina, Paul Ritchie knows what Martin Rennie is
thinking, and when he's thinking it.
That chemistry is now at the core of the Vancouver Whitecaps' coaching staff. Ritchie was
welcomed as Rennie's first assistant on Thursday, the second day of an eight-day mini-camp at the
Burnaby Lake Sports Complex.
Alejandro Bedoya was a 74th minute substitute to join Carlos Bocanegra and Maurice Edu in Rangers
win over Dundee United at home.
Monday night football.
When I was a slip of lad approaching drinking age Monday night football used to be a thing of
wonder.
(Drinking age, kids, used to be more of a general guide than a rule. Don't live as I lived. It's
bad for you.)
We'd gather around what we then thought were big screens and be stunned as Newcastle and Liverpool
served up seven goal thrillers and Sky's hype levels left our skies and bothered Martian moons.
How 50 USMNT players performed for their club teams this weekend:
Goalkeepers (7)
Guzan, Brad (Aston Villa/BPL)
Dressed however did not play in 3-2 win over Norwich City.
Dominic Cervi (Celtic/SPL)
Did not dress in 2-1 win over Motherwell.
Four games in the SPL today.
But I'm distracted by Sir Alex Ferguson's upcoming 25th anniversary as manager of Manchester
United. A phenomena. From Govan.
The SPL didn't even exist 25 years ago. We must have had football though, whatever they try and
tell us.
Must have had it because I'm sure Alex Ferguson left a top flight Scottish club to take over a top
flight English club 25 years ago.
Carlos Bocanegra and Maurice Edu will look to continue their winning ways as Rangers welcome Dundee
united to Ibrox Stadium.

Domination.
That's one of the words that can best be used to describe Rangers' undefeated season, a season
that Carlos Bocanegra, Maurice Edu and the rest of the club will attempt to build on when they face
Dundee United on Saturday.
Currently nine points clear of second-place Motherwell with an 11-2-0 record, Rangers should
take another step towards claiming a fourth straight Scottish Premier League title if it can live
up to its expectations against Dundee.
David Stockdale started and made 6 saves in Ipswich Town's 1-0 loss to Crystal
Palace. Last Tuesday he started and made 7 saves in Ipswich Town's 1-0 win at Portsmouth.
Bjorn Helge Riise did not dress in Portsmouth's 2-0 win over Barnsley. Last
Tuesday he was an unused sub in Pompey's 1-0 loss to Ipswich.
David Stockdale started and made 11 saves in Ipswich Town's 2-2 draw at
Cardiff on Saturday. On October 1 he started and made 7 saves in Ipswich's 3-1 win over
Brighton.
Bjorn Helge Riise did not dress in Portmouth's 2-0 win over Barnsley on
Saturday. He started and played 45 minutes in Portsmouth's 1-0 loss at Leeds on October 1.

As far back as I can remember, I've always wanted to be a floodlight loved floodlights and that
strange, ethereal, almost 'lunar' quality that they tend to lend to football matches but enough
about my little fetishes, let's get on with it.
Tally ho!
In case you thought this list wasn't big enough, two more loaners to be added to the list.
Bjorn Helge Riise recently joined Portsmouth on loan until the November 7. And
turns out this fella named Richard Barroilhet joined Finnish club Vaasan
Palloseura until October 31 way back in August.
For absolutely no reason a post marking John Clark's 47th birthday.
Actually not no reason: That today is his birthday was the first tweet I read this morning. Then
someone else mentioned him in a reply to a tweet of mine about Gordon Rae (children, ask your
fathers). And a week or so ago I was speaking to his cousin after a funeral in Port Seton.

It's no secret that Arsenal is in need of some reinforcements, and manager Arsene Wenger has
already identified one possible target for the winter transfer window.
Wenger is hoping to bring in Fiorentina winger Juan Manuel Vargas, the Peruvian international
which had been linked with Arsenal during the summer transfer window.
