My earliest memory of Manchester United was the 4-5 home defeat on 1st February 1958 which I
watched from my usual position on the corner to the right of the North Bank. At the time it was
called the best game ever seen in an English League fixture. It was the last game that United
played in England before the fateful Munich disaster, only five days later, in which twenty three
passengers and crew were either killed or died later from injuries sustained in the crash, among
them were eleven United players and staff.

Manchester City in round three and now Liverpool in round four. If Manchester United are going
to win the FA Cup they're going to do it the hard way... with Phil Jones in the side.

this evening, putting the icing on Newcastle's cake with this own goal. Phil Jones scored the
Magpies' third goal in a comfortable 3-0 win over United. Close your eyes and attempt to headbutt

'Tis been a fine season so far, with a new and rather rich kid on the block in the opulent form
of Manchester City shaking things up at the top, a whole host of freakish results (see United's 8-2
win over Arsenal, City's 6-1 win over United etc), a Tottenham finally looking ready to make a
serious title challenge and some impressive performances from the promoted sides.
We have seen in Part I how the term 'Man U', considered objectionable by many supporters today,
was created entirely uncontroversially by newspapers at least sixty years ago, as an easy printed
abbreviation for Manchester United. Used initially almost exclusively for fixtures, results and
league tables, it only later became part of grassroots speech a little later.
Phil Jones has been incredibly popular with Manchester United fans since joining from Blackburn
in the summer. All the top clubs went in for him but as soon as he spoke to Sir Alex Ferguson,
Jones made up his mind that he wanted to be a red.
Sir Bobby Charlton, who played alongside George Best and Denise Law, claimed Duncan Edwards, who
lost his life in Munich, was the only player who ever made him inferior.
I must say that when I was asked if I would like to write an article whereby I get to select
Manchester United's top ten all time right sided midfielders, I jumped at the opportunity with
great pleasure and enthusiasm. As a historically powerful juggernaut United have made it easy to
pick top tens for [.

6 February 1958 was the darkest day in Man Utd's history when 23 members of its football team
were killed after their plane crashed trying to take off a runaway at Munich airport. Amongst them
their best and brightest talent including the prodigious Duncan Edwards.
The Telegraph reckons United will wait until August to sign Samir Nasri.
The Guardian say Nasri won't sign a new deal with Arsenal, so will leave on a free next summer
if they don't sell him.
Soccerlens takes a look at Modric, Nasri and Sneijder.
A bit late with this one but the Evening News reports on Stretford students honouring Tommy
Taylor and Duncan Edwards.

Following his quite excellent piece for us about non-league videos a couple of days ago, we
are pleased to welcome Mike Bayly back from the Non-League Day initiative. Mike
wrote a book called "Changing Ends", about a season in non-league football, last
year, and this excerpt from the book traces the history of Dudley Town FC, the representatives of
the largest town in Britain never to have hosted league football.
Ferguson reveals for the first time, it was in that house that he saw Murphy soon after becoming
United's manager in 1986. There that he was given one of the best pieces of advice he has

Eddie Lewis, one of the original Busby Babes, has sadly lost his battle with cancer today. He
was born in Manchester in 1935 and played for Goslings before joining the Manchester United Junior
Athletic Club.
Lewis joined United in 1947 and made a total of 24 appearances, scoring 11 goals. He left United
for Preston and played for West Ham the season the Munich Air Disaster occurred.

A plane crashes on a runway in Munich. 23 of the 44 passengers die, including eight Manchester
United
players.
Among them was Duncan Edwards. It is football's tragedy that we will never know the player he could
have been:
Is it possible that Duncan Edwards was really that good?
