Aston Villa v Tottenham Preview: Big Clubs And Small Margins - originally posted on

Aston Villa take on Tottenham on Sunday afternoon with two clubs separated by 28 points and
fighting on opposite ends of the table, yet not too long ago they were both considered 'equal'
footballing powers.
West Bromwich Albion 0-0 Aston Villa Premier League 28th April 2012
It was never the most glamorous of ties, with Aston Villa arguably the dullest side in the top
division. However, despite the lack of goals, both sides did their best to give the crow at the
Hawthorns something to shout about.
Newcastle United's six-game winning streak in the Premier League came to an surprising end as
Wigan Athletic thrashed Alan Pardew's side 4-0, to keep their survival hopes very much alive.
Newcastle came into this game in fourth place, but they quickly found themselves two goals down
inside the opening 15 minutes courtesy of two goals form Victor Moses.
It's do or die for Chelsea and Barcelona today, and in many ways it's the same for Aston Villa
and Bolton, albeit under completely different circumstances.
The two UEFA Champions League semifinalists battle for a place in the Munich final at Camp Nou,
with Barcelona looking to rebound from last week's 1-0 loss to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge and the
2-1 home loss over the weekend to rival Real Madrid in league play.
Aston Villa 0-0 Sunderland Premier League 21st April 2012
It must be somewhat difficult to be a Villa fan these days. With an ex-Birmingham City manager
imbuing your team with about as much pzazz as a Marillion album track, and a squad desperately in
need of a major overhaul, there have been better times to support the Villans.
Blackburn Rovers 2-0 Norwich City Premier League 21st April 2012
What a topsy-turvy season it's been for Blackburn. Admittedly, more turvy than topsy (if that
makes any kind of sense), Â Rovers got back to winning ways against Norwich on Saturday afternoon
after securing a deserved 2-0 win which keeps them well in the race for survival.
It has been a frustrating season for U.S. international midfielder Stuart Holden, who has had to
face another long-term injury while trying to build on his early success in the Premier League.
That injury has not changed his stature as one of Bolton's more important, personable players,
though.
Queens Park Rangers 3-0 Swansea City Premier League 11th April 2012
Mark Hughes' relegation-threatened Rangers secured a vital three points at Loftus Road against a
lacklustre Swansea side. Joey Barton, Jamie Mackie and Akos Buzsaky were the goalscorers in a game
dominated by the west Londoners.
Wigan Athletic 1-0 Manchester United Premier League 11th April 2012
Well, well, well! Have Wigan just re-opened the title race courtesy of a shock 1-0 win against
Man Utd? With City hammering West Brom tonight, the gap at the top is now down to just five points
with five games left to play.
Blackburn manager Steve Kean was left rueing a 'cruel' defeat after Andy Carroll fired a last-gasp
winner to hand Liverpool a 3-2 victory at Ewood Park.
Kean was unhappy referee Anthony Taylor and his assistant had missed what he claimed was a foul on
Grant Hanley by Martin Skrtel in the run-up to the Reds' late winner.
Blackburn Rovers 2-3 Liverpool Premier League 10th April 2012
He's done it! He's finally done it! Liverpool's divine ponytail, Andy Carroll, netted a dramatic
winner at Ewood Park on Tuesday night as the Reds battled against a Rovers side desperate to stay
clear of the drop-zone.
Man Utd edged closer to the Premier League title with their eighth successive
victory on a crucial day in the title race. Wayne Rooney opened the scoring from the penalty spot
after Shaun Derry was harshly sent off for a shove on Ashley Young, who was two yards offside when
the pass was played through to him.
West Bromwich Albion 3-0 Blackburn Rovers Premier League 7th April 2012
Blackburn looked to have turned the corner in recent months, following a number of decent
results, but another defeat, this time at the Hawthorns, sees Steve Kean's side slip back into the
drop-zone.
Bolton Wanderers Fulham Premier League 7th April 2012
Whether playing in midfield or, as he did on Saturday, up front, Clint 'Deuce' Dempsey is a
handful for any defender and against Bolton at the Reebok, the American continued his superb run of
form with two first-half goals.
Chelsea 2-1 Wigan Athletic Premier League 7th April 2012
Spanish schemer Juan Mata was the match-winner for the Blues on Saturday, with his last-gasp
winner keeping Chelsea in touch with fellow Champions League hopefuls Tottenhan and Arsenal.
It's all set to be another exciting weekend of Premier League action with the race for the
title, European qualification and survival all really hotting up. Let's take a look at what we can
look forward to then on this Easter weekend:
Blackburn Rovers 0-2 Manchester United Premier League 2nd April 2012
In an entertaining game at Ewood Park, Manchester United produced one of their trademark late
victories to put themselves in pole position for yet another Premier League title.
Lionel Messi's four goals helped Barcelona to a big win over city rivals Espanyol Saturday while
Atletico Madrid boosted their Champions League hopes.
Messi was at his brilliant best scoring all of Barca's goals, and his third of the day, from a
classy run and finish past Espanyol stopper Cristian Alvarez in the second half, gave him 50 league
goals for the season.
Just as he was on the cusp of potentially returning to action for Villarreal, Giuseppe Rossi
faces yet another long spell on the sidelines.
The New Jersey-born Italian international tore his right ACL for the second time in the last six
months during a training session and will be out for at least another six months, according to the
club's official website.
Brad Friedel and Spurs look to hold their Champions League spot as they face Eric Lichaj and Aston
Villa, while Tim Ream and Bolton hope to jump out of the drop zone with a win over West Brom.
As far as season finales go, DaMarcus Beasley could not have had a much better performance to
close out his first year in Mexico.
Beasley capped his season with Puebla with a Man of the Match-worthy outing, playing a pivotal
role in the club overcoming a one-goal deficit to defeat Tigres UANL, 2-1.
Despite months of speculation that he would be transferring this summer, Chandler signed a
contract extension with FC Nurnberg that will keep him with the club through 2015.
Chandler's current contract still had another year on it, but as the final summer transfer
window of that deal approached, the possibility of him moving elsewhere increased.
The close of a football season usually brings about some interesting ties. These can come in the
form of title deciders or battles to avoid relegation. One such clash that took place on the last
day of regular fixtures in the Welsh Premier League was between Port Talbot and Carmarthen Town.
Carmarthen need to take points from this game to give themselves a chance of finishing outside the
bottom two and thus avoid relegation, but things are never that straightforward in the Welsh
Premier League.
With only four games left in the season, the teams at the bottom are making sure they are not in
the drop zone come a month from now. Thus far only Cesena has been mathematically relegated thanks
to their 1-0 defeat to Juventus on Wednesday. Novara will almost assuredly be the next team to be
officially relegated, having to face Juventus at home on Sunday.
Sunderland Wolverhampton Wanderers 14th April 2012
The dampest of damp squibs it was, a game with little action or indeed drama.
A point at the Stadium of Light is no mean feat, but poor old Wolves needed all three points if
they were to kickstart some kind of miraculous escape from the drop-zone.
A wild stretch in which Alessandro Del Piero showed he still has it in a landmark appearance,
Wigan Athletic beat Manchester United for the first time, Arjen Robben was twice the goat for
Bayern Munich, a third-tier French side reached the final of a domestic cup and Cristiano Ronaldo
struck for a hat trick transpired in a matter of hours overseas in one of the more memorable days
of the season.
Liverpool play host to Aston Villa at Anfield on Saturday with both sides desperate for all three
points.
The Reds are looking to arrest a horrible run of form, which has seen them lose six of their last
seven Premier League matches to culminate in them dropping to eighth spot in the table.
Villa are also in need of a morale-boosting victory as they are nervously looking over their
shoulders in the battle to stay up, with Alex McLeish's troops sitting just five points above the
drop zone.
Conor O'Brien played 86 minutes in SonderjyskE's central midfield on Monday night, as a comfortable
win over AGF Aarhus gave them much-needed breathing room ahead of the drop zone.
