Americans Abroad: Europa League Rewind

The resumption of the Europa League after a short hiatus meant another important round of games for Everton and Fulham. With those clubs in action, both Clint Dempsey and Tim Howard were in action Thursday afternoon.

Dempsey's Fulham traveled to Rome, and after getting out to a 1-0 lead, were reduced to 10 men early in the second half.

The FIFA U-20 World Cup wrapped up on Friday, October 16, 2009 with the championship and 3rd place matches. In the 3rd place match, Hungary faced Costa Rica while Ghana v Brazil was the final. Both matches would end up going into penaly kicks. Here's a recap of both alon gwith video highlights.

Crew defeats Saprissa 1-0 in Costa Rica, Houston falls in CCL

The Columbus Crew ended MLS and American struggles at Estadio Saprissa last night, becoming the first American team to win at the fabled stadium in San Jose, defeating Saprissa 1-0. An Eddie Gaven goal in just the fifth minute of the match stood up as the difference, as Will Hesmer made some nice saves to keep the clean sheet.

Nice to emerge from my blogging exile with a headline that hasn't appeared anywhere for pretty well close to a year. Earlier today Canada beat Cyprus 1-0 in an international friendly thanks to a goal by the Simeon Jackson who, along with defender Eddy Sidra and midfielders Tyler Hemming and Dominic Imhof, earned their first caps for Canada today.

It's always nice to see Yanks sign abroad.

Dominic Cervi has gone more than a year waiting for his professional soccer dreams to come true, and now the American goalkeeper is set to finally become a pro as he is set to sign a deal with Scottish club Celtic after receiving his Italian passport last week.

Selected with the 12th overall pick in the 2008 MLS Draft by the Chicago Fire, Cervi passed on a minimum-salary offer from the Fire and eventually made his way to Scotland, where he impressed Celtic after a lengthy trial last September.
