DFB-Pokal First Round: Famous 45, Heroic 90, Epic 120 and Transcendental 119:57

The Offside: Bundesliga 05 August @ 03:10 PM EST

There is much to like about the DFB-Pokal.

First of all, its' format contrasts nicely with all other season long competitions. A pure knockout tournament. 90 minutes minimum. 120 minutes and penalty shootouts if necessary. No draws. No rematches. No second legs. If you are the away team, live with it.

DFB-Pokal First Round Draw

The Offside: Bundesliga 27 June @ 02:47 PM EST

It's time to brush up on your knowledge of provincial Germany and long forgotten club name prefixes. The draw for the first round of next season's DFB-Pokal took place today.

Personal Picks of the Round:
Kickers Offenbach - Eintracht Frankfurt (Fierce Derby, Arch Rivals = Fun and Violence - not that the two should go together and hopefully it'll be mostly peaceful)
Fortuna Düsseldorf - Hamburger SV (sure to become a 51500 sell out)
Union Berlin - Werder Bremen (Union's fan renovated Old Forestry stadium deserved no less than the title holder for it's first official match)

Everybody else
Germania Windeck - Schalke 04
Concordia Hamburg - TuS Koblenz
Sportfreunde Lotte - VfL Bochum
Tennis Borussia Berlin - Karlsruher SC
Dynamo Dresden - 1.

After the dowdy draw againt China on Friday, Germany defeated the UAE 7-2 in Dubai on their second and last stop of the Asia trip on Tuesday. As suspected, it was a better training game, the only notable aspects were Schalke's Manuel Neuer who debuted in the German goal and showed a strong and solid effort.

A Quick and Complicated Guide to Europe

The Offside: Bundesliga 28 April @ 06:52 PM EST

European football competitions used to be a straight forward affair. Two cups for each domestic league title and another one for the best of the rest all played out in a two-legged knockout format. Then came the G-14, breakaway league threats and UEFA's response with a complicated mix of pre-group stage qualification knockout ties, group stages and post group stage knockout ties.

…und plötzlich bist du der Held

Bundesliga Blog 23 April @ 07:21 AM EST

Premier Leauge Title Decided and Other Football Thoughts

The Third Half 23 April @ 12:05 AM EST
The story out of the Premier League this midweek is a simple one; forget any thoughts on the title race being back on. As I've said from the start, this title race is over. Thanks to another game that is no where near close to being a classic, Liverpool saw Andrey Arshavin break out, scoring four times and needed injury time to pull level. Click to continue reading...

DFB-Pokal Quarter-Final Round-Up

Bundesliga Blog 18 December @ 05:59 AM EST
Click to continue reading...
