A January weekend to cast off the shackles of league pressure and revel in the romance of what is,
at this stage, the most egalitarian of our competitions.
A Scottish Cup weekend. Breathe in the fresh air of potential shocks and brace yourself butchers,
bakers and candlestick makers making SPL defences look like part-time amateurs.
Charlie Adam: We have a squad at Liverpool that is able to challenge
Anfield's £7m summer signing from Blackpool has learned from the mistakes his father made as a
player The Wikipedia entry for Charlie Adam covers every personal detail and statistic to be
expected for a Liverpool and Scotland international football player.
A trivia question for you to start with: name the nine cities to have produced more than one
club to reach the European Cup (or Champions League) semi-finals. The full list is at the bottom,
but I'll give you a headstart by telling you which is the smallest such city it's Dundee, each of
the city's senior clubs having lost at that stage on one occasion.
This afternoon's potential league decider at Tannadice between Dundee United and Rangers is the
164th between the two sides.
Last year's title was won at Tannadice, by Celtic, and twice during Rangers' nine in a row run
did they win the league at Tannadice - in 1990 and the last in 1998 - so bizarrely the Dundee
United fans are rather used to seeing the league won there, although the one title they did win
themselves back in 1983, they won just down the street at Dens Park.

With the speed of a cheetah after it identifies its prey, the Scottish Premier League season
approaches. As players in other top flight leagues wake from their midsummer's naps and beginning
stretching for their pre-season action, SPL players are back on their training grounds, preparing
for matches that mean more than just a bit of fitness.
So the administrator took over at Dens Park yesterday and set about cutting costs, with the
sackings of manager Gordon Chisholm, assistant Billy Dodds, nine first team players and two
backroom staff. Among the players to go are Mickael Antoine-Curier, for whom they rejected a £50K
bid from Hamilton during the summer, and Colin McMenamin, who was at Livingston for their first
spell in administration in 2004, and was released by Gretna in 2008 as they hurtled towards
oblivion.
So Scotland's lower leagues kicked off on Saturday.Dundee, powered by spending that is the envy of
most SPL clubs, started with a win over Morton. The hope at Dens Park will be that they've done
enough to buy promotion. But although the cash offers an advantage, money on its own is no guarantee
of success.

Harry Redknapp improbably turns Spurs from zeroes to heroes, from villainy to last gasp valiance in
the blink of an eye. Joe Kinnear rants, raves and ruminates but turns Joey Barton from A Wing to A
list as Newcastle rediscover some sort of fire in their bloated Geordie bellies. And who completes
this list of improbable sixty something success stories?
There is perhaps some comfort to be had for Tony Mowbray as his Celtic side continues their
at-first-glance pointless chase of runaway leaders Rangers.
Most pundits will have told him that trailing the Ibrox side by 10 points and with 10 more games
till the end of the season, the chances of overhauling that lead is nigh-on impossible.
DaMarcus Beasley saw action for the first time this year for Rangers who defeated Dundee FC in the
quarterfinal of the Scottish League Cup at Dens Park.
