Ian Rush: Liverpool FC’s Champions League Destiny Will Be Shaped By Fiorentina Showdown

Anfield Talk 11 November @ 12:06 PM EST
Many are expecting Liverpool's Champions League fate to be decided a fortnight today but I'm convinced it will boil down to the last game against Fiorentina.

The Year of Revolution: the UEFA Wall Has Fallen

SoccerLens 09 November @ 03:20 AM EST

The timing could never had been better. Precisely ten years after the fall of the Berlin Wall, another barrier in Europe is being taken down: the wall between the strong and the weak of European football; between the Champions League and the Europa League; between the Big Four and the Little 16.

EPL Talk 06 November @ 02:21 PM EST

So... to review... for Liverpool to qualify for the Champions League round of sixteen one of the following scenarios needs to occur:

Gauging Liverpool’s slim Champions League chances

Anfield Red 06 November @ 10:27 AM EST
While Wednesday's heartbreaking draw against Lyon didn't seal Liverpool's place in the Europa League it did put our chances on life support. Aside from needing to defeat Debrecen, Liverpool will also need some help from Lyon to keep the potential miracle alive. But what if Lyon and Fiorentina draw? Click to continue reading...

Good Game Bad Game [vs Lyon]

A Liverpool Thing 05 November @ 08:00 AM EST
A kick in the stomach. There's no better way to describe a game where, with a squad decimated by injuries, Liverpool went to Lyon and totally dominated. With better finishing, the contest should have been over by half time and when Ryan Babel scored, it looked as if Liverpool were going to get a much merited win. Click to continue reading...

Down but not yet out of the Champions League

My Anfield 04 November @ 05:33 PM EST
Just when you thought our season couldn't get much worse, along comes Lyon to equalise in the last couple of minutes. We're not out of the Champions League yet, but we're relying on some serious favours now.
It's a shame that Babels stunning goal didn't give us the deserved win. And apart from a couple of defensive errors, can't really fault anyones performance. Click to continue reading...

Fernando Torres faces possible surgery

Soccerblog 03 November @ 03:06 AM EST

The bad news just keeps getting worse for Liverpool with Torres to join Steven Gerrard as a possible candidate for surgery. He has a hernia which could be cured with a long layoff of a month but if symptoms persist then surgery will be the other alternative.

Rafa has no choice but to play Torres in today's match against Lyon at the Stade de Gerland.

A belated Vive le Foot this week since I found myself flying to the land of Ligue 1 overnight...sadly enough I will not be able to attend the PSG -Nancy tie in Paris...but my SF correspondent will be at the Emirates scouting some Frenchies vs. Blackburn...

Let’s be honest here – Liverpool have had 3 REAL tests this season and failed them all

Liverpool Kop 02 October @ 09:59 AM EST
As great as it is to see Liverpool embracing an attacking philosophy and scoring lots of goals in the league, the team has still been unable to win against anything other than comparatively inferior opposition. And with Chelsea coming up on Sunday, this does not bode well at all.
Here is a list of teams Liverpool has played so far:
Tottenham
Stoke
Aston Villa
Bolton
Burnley
Debrecen
West Ham
Leeds United
Hull City
Fiorentina

Anfield Talk 30 September @ 11:30 AM EST
Steven Gerrard has revealed his dismay after Liverpool FC's Champions League horror show in Florence which has thrown their quest to reach the knock-out stages into disarray.
Liverpool were soundly beaten 2-0 by Fiorentina in the Stadio Artemio Franchi after Stevan Jovetic's first-half double, and now face tricky back-to-back clashes with Group E leaders Lyon, who have won each of their two matches so far. Click to continue reading...

Outstanding Fiorentina

Football Fanaticos 30 September @ 03:45 AM EST
Anyone who may read this blog may know that I don't often have anything nice to say about Italian teams. However, as strange as it may sound, now I do: in the Champions League I watched Fiorentina play Liverpool last night, and was very impressed by the Italians, who in the first half of the match in particular were far superior to the great English side. Kuyt Can't Fathom Rush Record

Anfield Talk 29 September @ 02:45 PM EST
Dirk Kuyt today spoke of his immense pride at the prospect of matching Ian Rush's European Cup goals tally.
Kuyt is just two shy of Rush in Europe's premier club competition after taking his haul to 12 against Debrecen.
If the Dutchman draws level with his Welsh predecessor, only Steven Gerrard with 28 will have scored more Champions League goals for Liverpool. Click to continue reading...

Will the Champions League Become the New Carling Cup?

Arsenal Station 29 September @ 08:21 AM EST

As Arsenal prepare for Matchday 2 of the Champions League Group Stage this evening, it is hard to look at the changes made to this part of the tournament by Michel Platini, European football's equivalent to the anti-christ, as being, in any way, beneficial to the competition.

Platini's motives are somewhat sound, even if his execution is not.

CL: Debrecen vs. Lyon

The Offside - Olympique Lyonnais 28 September @ 10:27 PM EST

Tomorrow, Lyon will be taking on Hungarian side Debreceni VSC in their quest to qualify for the knockout rounds. They are already off to a good start, having taken three points from Fiorentina, but there are still five games to go, and anything can happen. It's important that Lyon get three points tomorrow because they have a double-header with Liverpool (who, incidentally, have suddenly regained an impressive amount of form in the last two weeks), as well as an away game at Fiorentina.

Lyon will seek to add to their 1-0 win at Fiorentina when they head to Hungary to play last year's champions, Debrecen.

Lyon will be missing key players Lisandro Lopez and Michel Bastos but despite this Lyon manager Claude Puel believes his team is strong even without those players.

"The squad has a real strength and team spirit.

Dark and Gloom in the BPL but not at Liverpool FC

Crimson Corpus of Liverpool Football Club 23 September @ 02:19 AM EST

Since the Burnley game, LFC has played against Debrecen in the CL, West Ham in the league and Leeds last night in the Carling Cup. I did not get to catch the Debrecen game but, as with the other two games, LFC won not so 'comfortably too' I was told.

We are sitting 'comfortably' at third place in the league after the West Ham game when a few teams in the top five dropped points as expected.
