You can imagine the disappointment of United fans after the derby defeat to Liverpool but I am
pretty sure the Carling Cup game against Barnsley put a smile on their faces.
First team players Owen, Obertan, Evans and Brown proved they've got plenty to offer in team's
quest for trophies, but it is the youngsters that impressed me the most.

Manchester United have today confirmed that Ritche De Laet will be a United player until
at least 2012. The Belgian defender was offered a new contract that will keep him at Old
Trafford for the foreseeable future (not entirely sure in what capacity, but at least he'll be
here). De Laet, now 20, was a surprise signing from Stoke, as he had never played for their first
team.

Man United defender
Ritchie de Laet has signed a new contract, which will see him at

It seems as though Ritchie de Laet has impressed the manager as much as he impressed most of our
fans given that he has just been offered a new three year contract extension.
We last saw him in the Wolves League Cup game but he previously put in impressive performances
against Hull last season and Valencia in a pre-season friendly.

Ritchie de Laet has been handed a new contract by Alex Ferguson as the 20 year old defender
nears his first team break through.
De Laet only signed for United in January and has so far made two first team appearances; a
Premiership win over Hull last season and a substitute appearance in the Carling Cup this season
when he was brought on after just 30 minutes following Fabio's red card against Wolves.

The summer has whizzed past us, like it always does. Today we have the glorified friendly, the
Community Shield. In my mind I haven't looked at it beyond what it is; a friendly and perhaps an
opportunity for fans to grasp at the slim straw of bragging rights going into the season.
Most of you, I'm sure, would recall the shit-hurling contest last year; a nil-nil draw leading
to a penalty-shootout and everyone, save for Tevez, were sauntering along trying to feign
excitement at the winning goal.

Ritchie De Laet enjoyed his home début in a friendly against Valencia last night, putting in a
good performance from right-back in our 2-0 win.
After the game he reveals he only found out he was playing at the last minute but Rio Ferdinand
helped settle his nerves.
"I only found out I was playing when the boss did his team talk," said De Laet.

Another win for United in the pre-season, making it six out of seven for the summer of 2009. A
2-0 win over the sixth best side in Spain is good preparation for the Community Shield on Sunday,
as we're ten days away from the season!
Positives
Antonio Valencia - The press have questioned, repeatedly, how Sir Alex Ferguson reckons a
Wigan winger who's scored a handful of goals over the past few seasons is going to replace
Cristiano Ronaldo.

So United took on Valencia in a match that I (for some reason) thought was supposed to be the
Testimonial for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. Perhaps not? Regardless, a rather young United side managed
to knock two past their Spanish counterparts and managed to look rather convincing in the
process.
Second half goals from Wayne Rooney and Tom Cleverley (both assisted by a once again impressive
Antonio Valencia) gave United the victory, and made me even more excited about this Sunday's
Charity Shield match against Chelsea.

Arsenal announced their first summer signing, unveiling Belgian defender Thomas Vermaelen (23)
as heir apparent to, well, probably Sol Campbell.
He is the first Belgian to play for Arsenal (I think) which I interpret as more evidence in
support of one of my more bizarre beliefs; Belgium could become one of the best teams around within
the next 5-10 years.

First off, apologies for the lull in activity during the weekend prior to the biggest game of
the season but things have been busy. Real busy. Anyway, I'm here now and no time like the present
to do some blogging.
As the title suggests, the team that Fergie put out (mostly youngsters but not exclusively) was
more than good enough to beat Hull and therefore silence any possible critics on the matter.
