SBI's Friday Free Kicks: Things are looking up in Philly, some MLS Awards thoughts and more

Soccer By Ives 06 November @ 05:33 PM EST

Standing on a rooftop overlooking the site of the Philadelphia Union's future stadium, I couldn't help but see the pieces being put into place for a club that should help revitalize soccer on the East Coast.

As cranes lowered ten-ton cement blocks into place to piece together the Union's stadium, you could stand inside the unfinished building and see the vision.

DC United Next Coach Cup: The Group Stage

The Fullback Files 06 November @ 02:30 PM EST
Time to kick off the DC United Next Coach Cup with the group stages. In true, bloated, FIFA money-grubbing fashion, we're going straight for the 32-name jugular. Some of these are serious candidates, others are waaaaaay out of left field or half in... Click to continue reading...

MLS says adiós to Blanco

SoccerLens 06 November @ 06:42 AM EST

Major League Soccer is growing and improving but outsiders often criticise the league for having a lack of quality. It is a relatively fast football played in the US, with plenty of big, athletic players of the kind which is becoming so important in so many footballing countries across the world.

Nominations Please

The Fullback Files 05 November @ 07:45 PM EST
Okay, rather than that staid old, winner-take-all "next coach" poll that the Goffster is running, I'm going to run a tournament-poll competition in honor of our beloved MLS Cup playoffs. So take a look at the names that Goff has listed and toss out... Click to continue reading...

Tricksy Winger?

Was it just me or was there a veiled barb in there directed at the FO? You know, the part about maybe the coach shouldn't shoulder the blame, maybe the players should, maybe the MANAGEMENT? But Benny couched that by spewing the Payne party line... Click to continue reading...

Well, the good news is, you won't be able to blame me for any of this year's winners. Click to continue reading...

Remembering Tom Soehn

DCUMD 05 November @ 08:59 AM EST

I've been a little bit surprised by some of the fan reactions we've seen over the past few days since the announced departure of Tom Soehn as head coach of DC United. The most common sentiment has been "Thanks for your service", which is nice, but maybe not entirely genuine coming from the same people who were writing (and probably chanting at games) "FIRE SOEHN" so frequently in the past.

Season Recap: DC United

WVHooligan 04 November @ 04:43 PM EST

2009 was a rough season for Ben Olsen and DC United. (Getty Images)

We knew going into 2009 that the calendar for DC United could be a fairly packed one. Possibly Champions League matches, US Open Cup title to defend, summer friendlies, and of course the regular season slate. It turned out to be just the case as DC United played a schedule so packed this year it definitely raised some eyebrows about how little depth MLS clubs really do have.

Changing of the Guard

That Soccer Guy 04 November @ 11:29 AM EST

Tom Soehn's term as Head Coach of DC United has come to a close Monday evening when he met with Kevin Payne and the rest of the head honchos in the DC United front office. Tom Soehn did not await the decision from Kevin Payne and left on his own terms.

Now the decision comes down to who is next to step up and be the new DC United Head Coach?

Wednesday's Daily: Staying Put

USSoccerPlayers 04 November @ 10:15 AM EST
With J Hutcherson -- Hey look, it's another MLS coaching vacancy. This time, it was Tom Soehn opting himself out of the running for a new contract with DC United. That might end up being a unique exit, but DC ends up in a situation familiar to too many clubs in Major League Soccer. A quick turnaround with the identity of the club at stake. Evening Links and Thoughts: Coaching Craziness

WVHooligan 03 November @ 05:52 PM EST

As mentioned earlier on my Twitter feed today has been a slow day due to some bad headaches on my end. I won't go into it much but I am feeling a little better after some medicine kicked in here (thanks to the few who asked). I didn't have much planned for tonight but I did want to get into the coaching carousel that is going on in Major League Soccer.

With Soehn Gone, Williams Becomes A Target

The Offside - NY Red Bulls 03 November @ 05:06 PM EST

Sharks in the water, RBNY.

DC United have just announced the formal resignation of head coach Tom Soehn from the organization. Soehn accumulated a respectable 36-30-24 MLS record, with a total of 55-48-31 in all competitions. So what cost him? Disappointing results in the face of high expectations.

Interesting Fact

The DCenters 03 November @ 12:14 PM EST
I just watched the 11+ minute video of all of the GOTY nominees. I noticed that no GOTY nominees were scored against DC United. On the face of it, that makes me happy. It is good to know that DC United didn't get poster-ized to wide renown this season.
Thinking about it more, however, one may be able to make an argument that for keepers like Rimando or Reis, who seemed to figure prominently in these highlights, if the only goals that they are giving up are the fantastical, flooky goals or the once-in-a-career one-timers out of midair, maybe that's not so bad. The Offside - DC United 03 November @ 11:55 AM EST

Just coming out at Behind the Badge, Tom Soehn will not be back next year as DC United's manager. This was the move you knew would happen, as two years out of the playoffs is just not acceptable to anyone involved.

The harder decisions (roster) are forthcoming, and hopefully, a good search can be conducted and the best possible candidate can be hired.

RIVER OR LIFE: The forwards

DCUMD 02 November @ 11:25 PM EST
The first round of River or Life with the DC United front office has gone pretty much as expected so far, with Tom Soehn just 0% Life, Dave Kasper over 50% but not convincingly, and Kevin Payne somewhere between 50 and 100. Now let's see where the forwards on the roster stand.
The thing about playing River or Life is that its somewhat up to the voter's discretion how you want to interpret the two choices, and I think that's going to come into play for a lot of us with some of these forwards. Click to continue reading...
