Women's Pro Soccer began Week 13 with two midweek match-ups but will continue over the weekend
with one Saturday and two Sunday rematches.

Yup - it's a busy day in Canterbury, with lots of computer work on tap, as well as some growing
grass to catch up with, a bike to get to the bike shop, maybe even a little bit of exercise (other
than mowing) and reading to squeeze in along the way. (Hah!)
Here's the WPS preview for the weekend - with some interesting match-ups, starting with FC Gold
Pride and the Daniela-less (and MacNeill-less) Athletica tonight at 8PM ET.

So Abby Wambach and Kia MacNeill have garnered one match suspensions as Tonya Antonucci (WPS
Commissioner) made the call (after the WPS Disciplinary Committee had decided differently). Let
the controversy roil and the debating continue. It probably isn't a bad thing for WPS to have
everyone kinda riled at this point in the young season.

Women's Professional Soccer commissioner Tonya Antonucci has decided to suspend Washington Freedom
forward Abby Wambach for the "reckless" tackle that lead to Saint Louis Athletica midfielder
Daniela's injury on Sunday. Antonucci also suspended Athletica defender Kia McNeil for "persistent
egregious conduct toward an opposing player.

Phillies won, Red Sox won .. and I've got the Slingcatcher hooked up and working in Dewd's
room!
Meanwhile, the Breakers will be honoring soccer great Maren Meinert at the game with the Freedom
on May 17th at Harvard Stadium. WUSA fans remember her fondly as a key ingredient in the
Breakers' success - most especially in their final year (with Pia coaching).

Saint Louis Athletica midfielder Daniela suffered a fractured tibia and damage to two knee
ligaments after a collision with Washington Freedom forward Abby Wambach during Sunday night's
game. The extent of the recovery has yet to be determined, but was described by the team physician
as "lengthy." This afternoon, Wambach issued the following statement.

First off, from ChristopherCornblog, here's something you've gotta see!
In soccer news, Daniela was named WPS Player of the Week after her 2-goal performance against
the Freedom. Sadly, I am guessing that she is lost to the Athletica for the rest of the season
after what looked like a bad leg injury.

Well, this Monday the leaves are bursting out of clenched buds and the silohuettes of the trees
are taking on that lacy, early-spring look. The new greens are woven in with reds, still - and
the tulips are coming into their own as the daffodils fade ... and birds are trilling and mating as
their tiny bird hormones take over their tiny bird brains - and spring is, yes, very much in the
air.

Quick note to clarify something that came up in tonight's St. Louis-Washington WPS game. I had a
bad view of a collision between St. Louis' Brazilian star
Daniela, who had the
first two goals in team history tonight, and Washington's
Abby Wambach. On
Twitter, @ATHLETICAsoccer said "No contact .

This is certainly the quote of the week and maybe of the year, and it came from Saint Louis
Athletica midfielder Daniela in reference to her team's lack of scoring through
its first two WPS matches:
"The ball does not want to go in."
It still didn't want to go in Saturday.

Yeah, me too.
I hear the Brazilians dominated, which makes sense. Four were taken in the first five picks. In
all, ten were selected.
1. Formiga (Brazil), 2. Kelly Smith (England), 3. Marta (Brazil), 4. Daniela (Brazil),
5. Cristiane (Brazil).
Here are the results if you care about the teams they're coming to.

Wow - I read today in the Swedish press that Pia has turned down an invitation from Dubya to visit
the White House and be graced by his presence. I didn't actually think I could like him less today
than I did on July 28 (just to select a random date). But after watching his smirking [...]

Everyone in Women's Professional Soccer is pulling for a US victory tomorrow both from a patriotic
and a business perspective.
The prevailing thought is that a return to a world championship, if not world dominance, would
provide a good kick start for WPS.
A gold medal for the US would certainly provide a boost for the League for all the obvious reasons,
but i think it's also important to recognize that the League benefits if Brazil wins.

Yes, it's true. According to this US News and World Report article, the Prez apparently feels he is
having a good final year. In fact, in a very positive development for the Bush camp, aides say that
he is feeling 'less antipathy' from his constituents, as he travels around the country.
