Click to continue reading...
Hay div@s y div@s. No es lo mismo Jessica Cirio que Graciela Alfano ni Moria Casán que Zulma
Lobato (?).

El Diego comes off sounding more like a doting grandfather than a coach of a national squad that
is struggling to put together a string of coherent performances.
He gets very passionate about Fidel Castro.
"After that we just sat there for hours talking about politics. Six or seven hours
easily.

Tuesday's been a fairly slow news day and I didn't get home until after midnight tonight, so
forgive me for just linking to my writing elsewhere in October's first post. Over a year ago, prior
to the 2007 Apertura kicking off, I suggested that one of the players to watch in the next twelve
months [..

Having left a week aside for Gimnasia de Jujuy and (especially) Racing fans to recover from their
celebrations upon surviving, it's time to look back on another campaign in Primera A. It's been a
momentous one for a number of clubs. Racing's survival joy was doubled by news that Blanquiceleste
were out, River ended a [.

Reconciliation could be in the air in Núñez. Following Daniel Passarella's resignation from the
manager's role at River Plate, numerous names have been thrown into the hat. Américo Gallego was
an early favourite, before it emerged that River's playing legend (and perhaps, before too long,
president), the Uruguayan ex-number 10 Enzo Francescoli, had ruled himself out [.

The penalty defeat to Arsenal in the semi-final of the Copa Sudamericana on Wednesday night was too
much, it seems, and Daniel Passarella has kept his word, and resigned from the River Plate
manager's role on Thursday. Back in May, Passarella, who had by that point overseen three
trophyless years at the Monumental, declared that if River [...]

Somehow, Mario Cuenca kept River Plate from putting any goals past Arsenal in the Monumental in a
match which the hosts had far the better of. Arsenal started more sharply and very nearly took the
lead almost before the match had begun, but were denied by Juan Pablo Carrizo and thereafter, River
dominated, particularly as [...]

This post was supposed to go up in the early hours of this morning, but when your modem stops
talking to your computer at 2am, there's not an awful lot you can do, so now with about three hours
to go before the second leg of the all-Argentine Copa Sudamericana semi-final, here are the
starting elevens. [...]

The all-Argentine semi-final of the Copa Sudamericana, between Arsenal and River Plate, will kick
off at 8:45pm (local time) on Thursday night in El Viaducto, and both sides look like they're going
to be operating with slightly tweaked starting lineups from the norms.

The thrillingly close title race lost two possible contenders on Sunday, as River Plate and
Independiente appeared to rule themselves out, managing only a draw at the Monumental, a result
which serves neither of them especially well for dreams of title-chasing.

The Uruguayan press are today up in arms over Defensor Sporting's failure to get past River Plate
in the Copa Sudamericana on Tuesday night, and it seems they've got every right to be. River played
very poorly, allowed the visitors a good half-dozen clear scoring chances, but an inspired
performance from Juan Pablo Carrizo, and [...]

...The end of my trip round Spain, at least. And, just possibly, for Juan Román Riquelme's
freezing-out of Villarreal's first team. But definitely not for Juan Pablo SorÃn's career,
according to the man himself, and neither for both River's and Boca's challenges for international
honours.

Contrasting Fridays for Daniel Passarella at River Plate, and for the players who've succeeded him
and the generation of '78 in the national team. The selección were given a free morning before
tomorrow's World Cup qualifying opener against Chile, but Passarella might not be so relaxed after
comments from River's president...

So the pattern of River Plate's season goes on - as does their recent record against their most
hated rivals. Battered 4-1 away by Argentinos in midweek, they played the champions of South
America off the pitch back in the Monumental on Sunday, to such a convincing extent that the crowd
(and the fans I [...]

One fixture looms over all, of course, as River host Boca in the biggest fixture anywhere in the
world this weekend, hoping to give the visitors the full force of their frankly terrifying home
form, and banish memories of their frankly terrible away form. In the last three years, River have
been trophyless (unless one [...]

The managers at Argentina's two biggest clubs have some complication selection issues going into
this week's Copa Sudamericana return legs. Boca Juniors, who won the first leg of their tie against
Sao Paulo 2-1 but conceded a last minute away goal which will make for very tricky business in
Morumbà on Wednesday night, have seen [...]
