It doesn't get much more daunting than this: The first thing Patrick McLain (Eau Claire Memorial) had to do in his Major League Soccer debut was face a penalty kick.
McLain – subbed in after Chivas USA starting goalkeeper Dan Kennedy was sent off for a foul in the box in the 54th minute of Sunday's match at Sporting Kansas City – stepped to his line and did some jumps, presmuably both to get loose and to try to distract Sporting striker Claudio Bieler, who was standing over the ball at the spot 12 yards away.

Chivas USA captain and goalkeeper Dan Kennedy joins the show to discuss his club and a possible U.S. National Team call-up and then Roche talks to Brian Straus of SportingNews.com.

It threatened to be more of the same for Chivas USA on Sunday afternoon.
FC Dallas looked to become the latest team to celebrate at the expense of the Goats at the Home Depot Center, spotting the Goats a goal early in the second half, but this time however, Chivas answered back in a huge way, as three unanswered goals enabled Chivas USA to finally celebrate an MLS regular season win courtesy of.
The Columbus Crew scored three times in the second half to defeat Chivas USA 3-0 at the Home Depot Center on Saturday. The two teams were fairly evenly matched until the final few minutes when the Crew took advantage of [...]
Some of you might be wondering what news about a Chivas USA goalkeeper recently being named captain of that team is doing on an FC Dallas-based site? Well, the answer is simple. See, before Dan Kennedy ever earned a spot on Chivas USA and became an MLS All-Star for the Red-and-White, he spent a little time with FCD.
"I think we were lucky to get a point. We had opportunities to put them away. And I think part of the Achilles' heel for Chivas is when they give up goals. When they give up a goal, they seem to give up more. For us, we just didn't have it today. I don't know if it's the long season, if it's the pressure, if it's the stress.
Coming into Sunday's matchup with Chivas USA, FC Dallas was in desperate need of a win to keep up with the Vancouver Whitecaps. That win did not come, as Dallas dropped a pivotal two points, in a match that Chivas USA dominated at home.
A 1-1 draw against struggling Chivas USA may have cost FC Dallas a chance to qualify for the playoffs.
Dallas now trails the Vancouver Whitecaps by four points with two games remaining for each team. Chivas broke a seven-game losing streak but extendedtheir winless streak to 11 games.
The 2012 season for both Real Salt Lake and Chivas USA could have been summed up with Saturday's game. Despite a strong showing from Chivas keeper Dan Kennedy, it was not enough to keep the opposing team out of the net, and often. Real Salt Lake's Álvaro Saborío knocked it past Kennedy three times on his own, tallying his second hat trick on the year to lead RSL past Chivas 4-0.
Álvaro Saborío scored early and often as Real Salt Lake crushed Chivas USA 4-0 Saturday night at the Home Depot Center.
A dreadful defensive performance by Chivas USA extended the last-place team's losing streak to six matches, while Real Salt Lake climbed back to second in the Western Conference.
On a weekend in which their two closest competitors lost, D.C. United picked up three huge points in the Eastern Conference playoff race.
Branko Boskovic came off the bench in the second half to provide United a 1-0 win at home against Chivas USA.
The sluggish affair seemed like it might end without a goal until the 64th minute when Lionard Pajoy beat his defender and hit a low cross into the box.

Michael Gspurning may have had one of the best statistical seasons in MLS history, but voters in the MLS awards were apparently unswayed. Gspurning finished third in both the Goalkeeper and Newcomer of the year voting, well behind winners Jimmy Nielsen and Federico Higuain.
That Gspurning didn't win either award was not necessarily a huge shock.
With just one more game to go in the MLS season, and January fast approaching, it is time for U.S. Men's National Team head coach Jurgen Klinsmann to decide what he wants to do with the January national team camp, and whether he wants to hold one. And if he does decide to hold the camp, Klinsmann has to settle on the players he wants to bring in.

Will DC and Dallas battle to any goals this year? (Getty Images)
Here we are, at the end of the first month of the season already and by the end of the weekend
we'll be in April. Week 4 in Major League Soccer gets started a little early with a game tomorrow
night in DC with United hosting FC Dallas.
Continuing our look at the coming MLS season we finish with the teams in the East and move West
in our preview.
Sporting Kansas City: The squad struggled to score in the preseason, but all
other signs are looking up for KC. The team doesn't have to start a season homeless on the
road.
After the Best XI were announced on Monday, this award was pretty much a given, but today, Jimmy Nielsen was named MLS' Goalkeeper of the Year in a landslide victory. The player being touted as his biggest Michael Gspurning finished a distant third, much to the surprise I'm sure of Sigi Schmid who was calling for him to be named the goalkeeper of the year earlier this year.
Michael Gspurning finds his name listed among the final three for both the Goalkeeper of the Year and for Newcomer of the Year. Eddie Johnson is listed as a potential winner for Comeback Player of the Year. The Best XI does not have a short list and will be the first time a Seattle Sounders player could find their name listed as one of 2012's best.
"I thought the first half was a difficult half for us. Being in a 4-4-2, we thought we would be
lucky playing Chivas with two center backs. I thought we would attack, with Jackson and [Fabian]
Castillo, and get some services in. I thought we did get some services in, but we didn't have any
body involved.

Twice Colorado led on Saturday night, and twice Chivas USA came back, eventually claiming a
share of the points at Dick's Sporting Goods Park.
Goals from Caleb Folan and Jeff Larentowicz, both clinical strikes, were countered by the
visiting Goats, who exploited the few openings they found on the night.
Week 2 appears not to have been as high scoring as Week 1. Bethlehem Steel F.C. was the high scorer of the round with 67 points, riding captain Graham Zusi's (SKC) 18 points, as well as 9 points from Amobi Okugo (PHI) and 8 from Bill Hamid. Bethlehem Steel's 145 point total is still not enough to claim first place overall, which is held by last week's point leader, Killer Angels, who have 149 points over the two weeks.
