There will be no hero's send-off for Thierry Henry.
After Henry scored the final goal in a 7-1 Arsenal victory over Blackburn last weekend, Arsenal
manager Arsene Wenger eluded to the possibility of extending Henry's loan up to the London derby
against Tottenham on Feb.
From Joe Roth to Adrian Hanauer to Sigi Schmid to players like Mike Fucito Seattle Sounders FC
has been quite clear about their goals for this year. Another US Open Cup title will not be enough.
It is a consistent organizational chorus that started at the End of Year Business Meeting and is
hinted at in most conversations about the upcoming season.
By The Numbers: Who should take over from Fabio Capello? - originally posted on
Soccerlens.com
Following Fabio Capello's resignation as England manager, Castrol EDGE Performance
data shows why Harry Redknapp is firm favourite to take over the reins. Since the previous
European Championships in 2008, Redknapp has secured an impressive win ratio of 49% with Portsmouth
and Tottenham, guiding Spurs to their most successful season in the Premier League and securing
European football for the past two seasons.
2012, after 2001?
Today is a crucial day as we'll know whether we continue our currently successful run in 4
competitions. Since the last victory against Dijon, OL players and staff didn't focus on the all
important incoming clash at the Velodrome against Marseille, which could condition the path of the
two clubs in L1.
The 2011-12 season ended last night. Okay, there's still sixteen or so games left and a lot can
happen.
But as a sporting competition, as a object of interest and fascination, last night's impotent
display and crashing out of our 3rd cup competition in as many months has us begging for this
once-promising season to just end.
Liverpool 2: Agger 21′, Kuyt 88′United 1: Park 40′
Liverpool progress past a Manchester side in a cup competition for the second time in four days,
this time defeating United on the strength of a late Dirk Kuyt winner. After the nadir at Bolton,
it's been a terrific week for Liverpool, first reaching the final of the League Cup with the
aggregate win over City, and now fighting through a tense match that was dominated at times by the
visitors to get the win in the dying moments.
The FA Cup may well be the oldest football cup competition in the world a fact that television
viewers will doubtlessly be reminded of around three hundred times over the next seventy-two hours
or so -but football supporters that don't have to habitually wipe rage-induced spittle from the
corner of their mouths could well be forgiven for approaching this weekends fixtures in the Fourth
Round of the competition with a degree of trepidation.
Yet another Clásico the two Spanish superpowers meet again today, in what will be their 8th
battle in the past 9 months (see table below). Real Madrid hosts Barcelona at the majestic
Estadio Santiago Bernabéu, for the first leg of their Copa del Rey quarterfinal
tie. Kickoff is at a very Spanish 10pm in Madrid, which corresponds to 4pmET/1pmPT here in the
US (where ESPN Deportes and GolTV will be televising the match, and ESPN3.
The US Soccer Federation announced on Friday that Jermaine Jones will be joining the US National
Team squad for the January friendlies. Jones is unavailable to his club team after being suspended
by the German Federation for an incident that occurred in the DFP Pokal cup competition. "Obviously
this is a very difficult moment for Jermaine," US National Team coach Jurgen Klinsmann said in a
press statement.
From the outside looking in, everything seems to be fine in Gunner land. King Henry comes back
to save the day with a late winner against Leeds in a 1-0 victory and Arsenal hosts Aston Villa in
the next round of the FA Cup.
However, after reading between the lines, I wasn't too thrilled with Arsene Wenger's pre-game
"motivational speech" to the fans, players, owners, and sponsors.
Arsene Wenger thinks that the FA Cup is a very minor competition in the footballing calendar, and
says that it is "compulsory" for Arsenal to reach the Champions League every year rather than win
the world's most famous cup competition. "The FA Cup is something that is for enjoyment. It is a

Arsenal face Leeds in a repeat of last season's FA Cup 3rd round tie, with the Gunner's winning
3-1 at Elland Road in a replay. Thierry Henry will be named in the Gunners squad having officially
become an Arsenal player again for two months on-loan. The tale of the tape for these two sleeping
giants of English football are as follows.
Today Major League Soccer released the 2012 schedule and it's being touted as the longest ever,
running from March 10 until the MLS Cup final on December 1. That leaves January and February as
the only calendar months without league matches.
December is more of a psychological barrier than anything else.
Liverpool step into the last remaining competition on their calendar, welcoming Oldham Athletic
to Anfield in the third round of the FA Cup. The League One side got past Southend United in the
second round after a draw forced the home replay, which the hosts won 1-0. Liverpool will be
looking to get past the third round for just the third time in six seasons after crashing out to
Reading and Manchester United in the past two seasons.
Liverpool face Oldham Athletic at Anfield in the FA Cup third round tomorrow night, and Kenny
Dalglish is keen to stress that he has no intention of devaluing the competition by fielding an
under-strength team.During his press conference at Anfield earlier today, Dalglish expressed his
dismay at how England's oldest cup competition has been 'devalued' in recent years:"The FA Cup has

First of all I should start this piece by wishing everybody a happy new year! I've been enjoying
myself over the Christmas holiday and have neglected the blog over the last few days so I need to
rectify this, starting off with a piece regarding the new Emperor's Cup winners in Japan.
FC Tokyo have done an unlikely league and cup double in Japan following their 4-2 triumph over
Kyoto Sanga in last Sunday's Emperor's Cup final.
The MLS incarnation of the Seattle Sounders is a very young franchise with only three seasons
under its belt. That combined with the relative lack of player movement in the single-entity MLS
means that there really aren't that many ex-Sounders. But I thought it'd be nice to take a look
back at some Sounders of yore and see what they're up to now.
Barcelona striker David Villa got a welcome boost as he was released from Hospital yesterday,
five days after undergoing an operation on his broken leg picked up last month in his clubs
successful World Club Cup competition.
Villa must be delighted with being able to spend Christmas day with his childhood sweetheart,
Wife Patricia Gonzalez and their two Daughters, Zaida (8) and Olaya (2).
Why watching the FA Cup 'with' Budweiser won't be everyone's glass of beer
It's only beginning to dawn, with the third round in sight, that the oldest cup competition in
the world is now called "The FA Cup with Budweiser." Not the Budweiser FA Cup, as that would sound
like they were endorsing alcohol.
For fans of American Sports, even at the college level, there is usually only one prize.
The players and teams in the major leagues may win their division and their conference but it
means nothing if they don't win the ultimate prize and lift the Championship trophy. In England the
phrase 'We can concentrate on the league' is a very familiar one and can be used in one of two
ways.
Manchester United were dumped out of Europe's elite cup competition after a 2-1 defeat to Basel so
it is adios to the Champions League and hello to the UEFA Europa League! The draw for the Europa
League round of 32 and round of 16 will be held on 16 December 2011 on the same day [...] Related

to reach a final or a semi-final of a domestic cup competition since 2006.
Carra, who helped Liverpool keep a clean sheet against Chelsea in the recent Carling Cup quarter

"The minimum Liverpool should be looking at each season is getting to the semi-final of one of the
cup competitions, either the FA Cup or the Carling Cup.

and reporter for ESPN, broadcaster of the FA Cup, gives us her take on this weekend's second round
games in the world's oldest domestic cup competition.
It's so easy to dismiss the Carling Cup as a competition that features just B teams, but anyone who
watched Tuesday night's games may have come away with a renewed sense of optimism. Yes, it's a cup
competition that offers ...

The UEFA Champions League group stages is drawing to a close as In The Stands identifies the pick
of the rounds matches. In the words of Sir Alex Ferguson, it is ‘squeaky bum time' for the those
teams still harbouring ambitions about progressing in Europe's elite cup competition, let alone
winning it.

Frimpong the most relieved of them all
Come from behind win for Arsenal as we progressed to the quarter final of the Carling Cup
competition. Owen Coyle started with a side that is packed with Premier League experience but found
it hard to get into the game in a rain-soaked Ashburton Grove.
This is the Second Qualifying Round of the FA Cup, isn't it? By this stage of the competition,
we would usually be wearing something approaching our winter woollies and sipping at Bovril which
remains scalding hot for three minutes for turning stone cold in the amount of time that it takes
to blink, but summer has come late this year, and Surrey is unusually temperate this afternoon.

The beauty of the Cup competition lives on in the RHB Singapore Cup as the "Final Four" - Etoile
FC, Home United, Albirex Niigata (Singapore) and Hougang United fought till the very end to see the
emerging of the Protectors and the White Swans for the 19th November date at JBS.
Fred Mendy (pictured above right) scored against his old team to send HUFC to the finalIn both
first leg fixtures of the "Final Four" saw both the Stars and White Swans agonizingly forgo their
lead in the dying moments of those matches to see their respective opponents - Home United and
Hougang United crawled back to level terms to square off the encounter.
Steven Gerrard has revealed that Liverpool are taking every cup competition seriously after manager
Kenny Dalglish put out a strong side in their 2-1 victory over Brighton in the League Cup.
t was the Reds captain's first appearance after spending six months on the sidelines through
injury, and he insisted that being at Liverpool is "all about winning trophies".
There's usually two schools of thought after particularly awful matches things could be so bad
that some swear off the football for awhile, the things they've seen never to unseen. Or there's
the view that another match can't come quickly enough, regardless of whether or not it promises
something better.
There was nothing concrete upon which to link Birmingham City winning the League Cup with their
relegation from the Premier League at the end of last season, of course, but it didn't stop some
from asserting exactly this and it hasn't stopped panicky-looking managers whose main ambition for
this season is to finish seventeenth in the Premier League from effectively binning England's
second cup competition.
Before the Portland Timbers meet the New England Revolution on September 16, we look towards the
final two weekends of Cascadia Cup competition being played in Vancouver, BC later this month. Each
Cascadia team has a shot at being the first MLS club to hoist the Cascadia Cup as victors, but at
least one team controls their destiny.
