North Korea in the World Cup

See The Cup 18 June @ 11:15 AM EST

I know the country is not the "miss congeniality", but how cool is that? Since 1966, when Portugal eliminated them with a 5-3, North Korea does not play a World Cup. Even cooler? South Korea will be there, forcing commentators to say "North" or "South" instead of just "Korea". The qualification came after a 0 draw with Saudi Arabia.

MLS Goals of the Week

The Offside Rules 16 June @ 09:21 AM EST
This week's reel leads off with Freddie Ljungberg's finesse shot against San Jose. Definitely the classiest finish of the week but Corey Ashe deserves some sort "Best Supporting Male"-esque award for his assist to Cam Weaver; he was Cuba to Cam's Tom on this one. Click to continue reading...

LA, The U.S. & Iran in International Soccer Ménage à Trois

The Offside Rules 09 June @ 09:25 AM EST
As you may have read over at TOW --TOR's California cousin-- the rumored U.S.-Iran match looks set to happen as a 2-legged affair; the talk out of Iran is that the Yanks will play the first match away in Tehran on 10.10.09 with the home match slated for LA on 11.14.09. But note that the US is already slated to play Honduras in a World Cup Qualifier on 10. Click to continue reading...

Click to continue reading...

A roundup of Caribbean action

HexagonalBlog 25 May @ 11:59 AM EST
I haven't done a roundup of league action throughout the Caribbean in the past. Information from the island countries isn't easy to get and is very spotty when it does arrive. (But thanks to Edwin for his regular updates on Puerto Rican football!) It's past time for me to do the same kind of update that I do for Central America, so here it goes. Young American hope

premundial jornada 3

Update to Cuban at Practice

Last week I had posted about the Wizards having one of the recent Cuban defectors out at practice last week, training with the team, and today we have an update on the situation. USA Reaction - Smoking the Cubans

The Fullback Files 13 October @ 09:32 PM EST
Day late and a dollar short and all that ;-). Anyway, I didn't really take too much from this match. I know, I know, I'm totally jaded, emitting a resounding "meh?" in the wake of a 6-1 victory. The Cubans were shorthanded, outclassed, and we got the goals we needed. The play wasn't magical to watch, but we were completely dominant in a match we should dominate. Click to continue reading...

Cuban Defectors Redux

Another tournament, another defection. The Washington Post is reporting that two members of the Cuban National Team defected prior to Saturday's World Cup qualifier. That brings this year's grand total to nine.
Seeing as how you could almost field an entire team with this year's defections, it seemed like a good time to give a full list of those who have wandered away from their hotels to try their luck in MLS/USL. Click to continue reading...
