With a history of recent slip ups to lower league opposition, there is a tendancy to view fixtures
such as last nights with a degree of trepidation, and when we gifted Scunthorpe an equaliser after
going ahead so early, there could well have been a sense of foreboding around the stadium.
This season though there has been the first suggestions that the old mentality is being cast aside
and rather than Scunthorpe's goal spelling disaster, the exact opposite was true as we went on the
front foot and sealed our progression through to the quarter-finals in convincing fashion.

Crystal Palace 1 Nottingham Forest 1 A fairly laboursome game was always likely with managers like
Davies and Warnock in charge of the two clubs they're both fairly well-versed in employing spoiling
tactics to inhibit the other side, and this was pretty much the order of the day at Selhurst Park
yesterday.

Fulham striker Andy Johnson is just days away from making a return to action following his
injury that has kept him out of action since October 4th. Johnson is facing a race to be fit for
Fulham's crucial Europa League match against Roma on Thursday, as the former Crystal Palace man
hopes to join Bobby Zamora up top for the Cottagers.

A row went on down near Sloper Road on Saturday with Cardiff City's one time Perugia hit man, Jay
Bothroyd accusing an unspecified Crystal Palace player of a racist comment directed towards his
team mate Michael Chopra. According to Bothroyd, "I wasn't there but I spoke to Chops and he said
one of their boys made a racist comment to him".

Pure craziness from the FA as per bloody usual!
RAFA BENITEZ had reasons for celebrations and puzzlement today as the dust settled on
his disciplinary hearing with the FA.
The Liverpool manager was found guilty of making an "offensive" gesture – simulating a pair of
glasses – to referee Phil Dowd after the official failed to give the Reds a second penalty during
the 2-1 defeat at Tottenham on August 16.

Let's now jump forward from Crystal Palace and the Kung-fu nightmare at Selhurst Park in January
1995 to Crystal Palace at Villa Park on Sunday 9th April. Old antagonisms from the league encounter
had hardly had time to subside when United were to face Palace again, this time on neutral turf in
the FA Cup Semi Final which United had reached by beating Sheffield United, Wrexham, Leeds

West Brom striker, erm, grasses up Eagles Roman Bednar has been having a bit of a moan about
cruel-hearted Crystal Palace players who allegedly called him a drug dealer during their recent
match against West Brom. The Czech striker is just returning from a three-month suspension after
being caught buying cocaine and cannabis by the News of [.

On the football league show this weekend this man popped up completely unmentioned. Saturday was
Crystal Palace's family day for the match against Blackpool. I think family days are a great way to
bring the children in and get young lads and lasses hooked on live football. I'm sure they all had
a great time with the sun shining and Palace winning 4-1.

In Part I of 'Hitting the fan with United' I revealed that I had been an eye-witness to both of
the most serious match-day assaults perpetrated by players on spectators in Manchester United
history, jaw-dropping events which happened 35 years apart.
The first and now less-remembered incident happened in April 1960 and involved Harry Gregg, not
only one of the greatest goalkeepers ever to play for United but also a genuine hero for his
bravery at the time of the Munich Air Crash two years before, when 23 people were killed including
8 'Busby Babes'.

Since there are only Johnstone's Paint Trophy matches and FA Trophy Second Qualifying Round
replays this week, we thought it would be about the right time to have another "Video Of The Week"
and this, I have to say, is something rather special a complete episode of London Weekend
Television's "The Big Match" from April 1979.

Any reasonably minded City fan cannot really complain. Eight competitive games played, seven won.
Its been a strong start to the new season. Actually, no. Its been more than strong. The victory
against West Ham makes it City's best league start since 1961.
The defeat of Arsenal
The real high so far has been the 4-2 defeat of Arsenal, a match
that will go down in Eastlands history because of the intensity in which it was played and
controversy that it produced.

Blackpool's impressive start to their Championship campaign has resulted in a Scotland call up
for Charlie Adam, who is aiming to warm up for Scotland's friendly in Japan next weekend by
bouncing back to the top of his game at Crystal Palace tomorrow. Blackpool are currently 7th in the
Championship and remain the only club to beat high flying Newcastle as yet in the league.

A quick opportunity then to put the derby defeat behind us and get back on track.
There has been a huge media focus on us in recent times, mainly for non-footballing issues it has
to be said, so it would be nice to focus solely on on-pitch matters and this competition does offer
us the best opportunity to land a trophy.

During the off-season, a sense of expectation rushed through the veins of fans of twenty-four clubs
who make up arguably the most competitive league in the world.
There is no big four in this compelling competition - anyone can win it.
With three of the biggest clubs in England relegated from the mighty Premier League, the new
Championship season has an exciting feel to it.

Wining your first four league games straight is championship winning form in anyone's book. Yes,
there are still eight months to go of a long, trying season, but with 15 points from 18 surely it
is time to start taking Mark Hughes's multi-million pound team seriously.
Despite spending more money on new players than Elton John does on new glasses during the
summer, Mark Hughes still struggled to convince football folk his team were serious title
contenders.
