Signing of the season?
So one of the most exciting days of the season is over, and Jim White's excitable gossip-hungry
clone can go back into suspended animation until next year. Yet spending is down nearly 70% versus
last year's January deadline, where Torres and Carroll dominated the headlines.
The draw for the FA Cup's fifth round was held earlier today. A reunion with Gus Poyet (via
Brighton) wasn't in the cards, with Chelsea being drawn against Birmingham.
Not bad. The Championship club will pose a threat, but not to the extent that traveling to
Anfield would have. Ties will be held 18/19 February.

everything that has happened since makes them seem still more unusual.

Blow me down with a feather, Crawley have lost five in six. Tipped widely to succeed for a second
consecutive season, the Red Devils Mark II have been up against it in the last few weeks, their
League Cup defeat at Palace preceding a woeful run that has witnessed pointless games against
Cheltenham, Morecambe and Swindon.
So, three weeks into the new Football League season and in many ways it's much the same as the
last. The divisions might be different, but Southampton and Brighton are still dazzling on the
south coast; Peterborough are still serving up improbable goalfests at London Road; Crawley are
still cruising at the top of the league; and, less happily, Plymouth's horrific decline continues

England's friendly against Holland at Wembley on Wednesday night has been called off as the
London rioting intensified last night.
With the City in flames overnight and gangs taking a stronghold of large sections of the
capital and Police resources stretched to their limit, the FA have made the right call on
cancelling the much anticipated clash.

The history of football in Fleetwood, Lancashire, is one of boom and bust. The town's original
club, Fleetwood FC, renamed itself Fleetwood Town and were founder members of the Northern Premier
League in 1968, before folding in 1976. A new club sprang up the following year, reached the final
of the FA Vase in 1985 and won back its place in the Premier Division of the Northern Premier
League three years later.
Each year, the FA Cup brings the English football consumer, entertainment that
(apparently) no other country brings to the table, as the joy of a second knock-out tournament
makes its yearly appraisal.
And now, our journey has brought us to a completely underwhelming semi-final, where even the
mere glimpse of the ties makes you wonder if the FA Cup itself is out to ruin its own
enjoyment.

As has been well documented in recent years there are a whole host of league clubs who are

The squad that flew out to face Marseille has been revealed. Have you seen it? The French

Smalling; Scholes, Gibson, Nani, Carrick, Fletcher, Bebe, Obertan, Tunnicliffe; Rooney, Berbatov,

Ryan Giggs and Rio Ferdinand will definitely not be playing against Marseille
in the Champions League on Wednesday after both missed the trip to France.
Ferdinand has failed to recover from an injury picked up several weeks ago while Giggs absence
is not quite clear.
United will also be missing Anderson who picked up a knee injury at the week-end against Crawley
while Michael Owen, Jonny Evans Park ji Sung and Antonio Valencia who picked up an horrendous

Non League side Crawley visited Old Trafford today before their FA Cup 5th

While people's attentions have been firmly on the drama of the Champions League, the fifth round

The biggest team in the country – sorry Liverpool fans – faces non-league Crawley while
Leyton Orient (fresh from their screwing-over at the hands of Newham Council, West Ham United and

The journalists have been waiting for this. "The Big One," I hear one say gleefully. "Red Devils
v Red Devils!" exclaims another. But the truth is, they're most likely to be disappointed. A
giant-killing is improbable at Old Trafford, unless of course, you mean that literally and United
thump in goals from all corners.

With Crawley set to play Manchester United in the fifth round of the FA Cup this weekend, a
gaggle of the club's supporters banded together to record a tribute song 'A Message To You, Rooney'
to commemorate the occasion.
However, the fairly good-humoured atmosphere was spoiled when it came to light that one of the
Crawley fans that appeared in the video had spent most of his time making 'aeroplane' gestures in
reference to the 1958 Munich Air disaster that killed 23 of United's players and staff.
Ducky's Note: Now that the euphoria from THAT goal in the derby has more or less died down,
and with no competitive games for United till the trip to Marseille (Crawley at home, come on),
this seemed like a good time to step back, take a breath and have a look at our complete
non-activity in the January transfer window, especially considering records got broken over the
space of hours on the last day.
