The U.S. WNT has started its training camp in Los Angeles, a final week of practice and fine-tuning before head coach Pia Sundhage names the 20 players that will travel to Vancouver, B.C. for the CONCACAF Women's Olympic Qualifying Tournament.
Sundhage called up 29 players for the camp, but just 27 are currently training as Abby Wambach and Hope Solo are in Zurich, Switzerland, for the year-end FIFA Gala Awards.

Atlanta Silverbacks 2-1 Montreal Impact

The Atlanta Silverbacks (1-2-7) set a record on Wednesday night at Silverback Park in Atlanta, GA. They won their first North American Soccer League game.

In doing so they finally accomplished what every one of the 37 professional men's soccer teams in the 3-North American soccer leagues (MLS, NASL and USL PRO) had done.

After a long break for the spring high school soccer season in Washington that allowed the California teams to pick up some ground in the Academy league standings, the Sounders returned to action this weekend and got right back to winning.

Fans were treated to two of the better goals of the Major League Soccer season on Saturday night, when Carlos Ruiz and Bobby Convey each found the net in impressive fashion.

Ruiz admitted that his left-footed volley from distance was a bit fortuitous, and perhaps Chicago keeper Jon Conway could've done better, but the stunning strike was perfectly hit and gave the Union three points.

Thomas Guinn, Liberty Mt View Eagles (2011)

Thomas Guinn, Head Coach of the Mt View Liberty Eagles girls teams the past two seasons, has been named Head Coach for the Springfield Catholic boys team.

Guinn is a graduate of Fontbonne University where he played for the D3 Griffins, winning the St Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference titles and qualifying for the NCAA Tournament his final two season (2003-2004).

Manchester United's grip on the Premier League title grew tighter following late drama at Arsenal. Chelsea bounced back from Champions League disappointment with a win at West Brom. At the other end of the table, Wigan produced a fine display at Blackpool to earn a vital three points and move out of the relegation zone.

Not going to do pure play-by-play here but just give my thoughts as things develop. The Vancouver Whitecpas are repected around North American soccer for their ability to develop talent. The Sounders have started much more recently, but brought in some of the best that Seattle has to offer.

The Academies played California's Arsenal FC this morning in the cold drizzle at Starfire, and I thought I'd swing by to catch the U-18 match, which turned out to be a tale of two halves. It was a good showing from the homem side, with about 20-30 ECS (complete with drum and some flags) and about 20 other miscellaneous supporters along the sideline.
