With Thursday's acquisition of Albanian striker Hamdi Salihi as their second Designated Player,
D.C. United is making one thing abundantly clear: After spending the past few seasons breaking down
and rebuilding an aging roster, this team is once again ready to win now.
Sean Donahue issued a short announcement last night over at New England Soccer Today explaining
that New England Revolution officials have denied the reports he gathered from his source
concerning the way the Monsef Zerka contract situation was handled. Through the media relations
department, the team asserts that they made efforts to keep the Moroccan winger at the club.
On Thursday, the New England Revolution contacted New England Soccer Today to deny the
claim of the unnamed source contained in the "Zerka Not Returning" article published on Feb. 1.
In the aforementioned article, the source told New England Soccer Today that Revolution
head coach Jay Heaps and general manager Michael Burns "never had serious discussions to try to
bring [Monsef] Zerka back.
The name of West Ham keeper Rob Green has been mentioned once again in connection with a move to
Spurs and there will be a large section of Tottenham fans who are hoping to pin this one down to
lazy journalism.
Green, who is now 32, is out of contract at the end of the season and reports that the Hammers
have postponed contract talks until the summer seem to have sparked off these rumours.
Championship side Leeds United have accepted a bid from Norwich City for their club captain Jonny
Howson.
The midfielder, who is out of contract in the summer, is a product of the Leeds academy and has
made 225 for the club. The Leeds skipper is currently on the sidelines through injury, but it is
thought he will open contract talks with the Canaries this week.
The Sun reported earlier today that Ravel Morrison's contract talks with Manchester
United had broken down.
Speaking on Twitter, Morrison has claimed that there is no contract offer for him to talk about.
Is that because he's signed a deal? Is it because he's rejected the latest offer and there isn't
another deal on the table?
Everybody knows that Robin van Persie has refused to talk about his new contract at Arsenal until
the end of the season, but there has been little mention of the same situation developing with Theo
Walcott. Both of them will have just 12 months left on their contract in June, but it seems that
negotiations [.
Tonight's game with Chelsea has unfortunately raised the issue of Luka Modric's future once
again but manager Harry Redknapp has been quick to claim that the influential Croatian is going
nowhere.
Luka appears to have put an unsettled August behind him and while he hasn't appeared at his best
in the club's last two league games, he is generally at the heart of our most creative
football.
The Arsenal chairman Peter Hill-Wood is more than aware that Robin Van Persie has postponed any new
contract talks until next summer, but is convinced that the Dutchman is very happy at the Emirates
and is sure to sign a new contract in the end. "I think Robin wants to stay, he seems very happy,"

It is being reported this morning that both Arsene Wenger and Harry Redknapp are monitoring the
contract talks between Alejandro Faurlin and his club, Queens Park Rangers. The Mirror reports that
the Argentinian midfielder has demanded a wage raise to £50,000-a-week to extend his contract,
which runs out in 18 months time, but QPR bosses [.

After three years as a backup, Brad Guzan will make his first Premier League start on Saturday
for Aston Villa, and the club is already in the process of trying to extend his stay at Villa Park
before his current deal expires this summer.

Lots of Arsenal news filtering through this morning, not least of which is the report alerting
us that Peter Hill-Wood does not expect to open contract talks with Robin van Persie until the end
of the season.

A high scoring game was not something that I had expected from a Chelsea-Arsenal derby match. Then
again I had forgotten that Arsenal does not know how to defend this season nor did I remember that
Chelsea has yet to keep a clean sheet this season. And so, we were treated to an eight-goal
slugfest in which the Blues and the Gunners went after each other blow-for-blow until that defining
John Terry slip.
Damien Comolli has personally led a convoy with two scouts to watch Fabricio Coloccini in action,
according to the Daily Mirror, with the Argentine high on Liverpool's transfer wish list for
January.
Kenny Dalgilsh has already purchased Andy Carroll and Jose Enrique from Newcastle, and with
Enrique's connections to Coloccini, Dalglish and Comolli are both said to be hoping that a deal can
go through in the next transfer window.

When Robin Van Persie stalled on his Arsenal contract talks earlier in the month, there were
tremors felt everywhere. Clubs were perking up their ears, waiting for new development. Arsenal
fans were quaking....dismayed that yet another "home-grown" star is on the verge of leaving.
Arsenal has not been known to keep their stars with huge wage packages and therefore it will not be
hard to imagine the departure of the Dutch star come end of this season.
I'm kidding. Half-kidding.
Andre Villas-Boas confirmed today in his pre-Everton press conference that the club have offered
Salomon Kalou a new contract. Yes, that Kalou.
"Regarding market speculation it is going to be difficult to comment on all situations," AVB
said.
Alisher Usmanov wants to increase his Arsenal shareholding in move that could spark a boardroom
power struggle at the Emirates.
The Daily Mail claims that the Uzbeki billionaire , the club's second biggest shareholder, is
trying to increase his stake to 30 per cent. He owns just over 29 percent but will write to the
club's smaller shareholders this week, offering to buy shares at £14,500 each.
Andy Johnson's hat-trick and ongoing contract talks got me thinking. Should we renew? Tough
call, but my instinct is that if we do it should be very much on our terms. He's been a good
player to have around, but the time he's spent off the pitch should be a red herring flag
(herring indeed!

After the tumultuous summer at the Emirates which saw the likes of Cesc Fabregas, Samir Nasri and

Staying Put: Ten Expected Summer Transfers That Weren't - originally posted on
Soccerlens.com
For every confirmed transfer in any given summer transfer window, there's another ten that fall
short of completion or being remotely plausible. That's the way it seems, at least.
Even with the misses in mind, a lot and I mean a lot of money changes hands every summer, as
players notable and not leave for new pastures, some greener and some not.
Roberto Martinez has confirmed Wigan have opened contract talks with highly-rated midfielder
James McCarthy.

"AWWWWWWWWWWWWW YEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAHHHH!!!"
As you may or may not be aware, Samuel Eto'o is on the brink of signing for Russian club Anzhi
Makhachkala (they who currently employ Roberto Carlos and force all their new signings don
'traditional' sheepskin carpets and hats), with Massimo Morratti, several Inter execs and the
player's agent all confirming that the move is nearing it's completion over the course of the past
couple of days.
Newcastle United have confirmed that Joey Barton has been made available on a free transfer.
Relations between the club and the outspoken midfielder had already been strained following a
breakdown of contract talks over the summer, with Barton taking to Twitter to air his frustrations.
The 28-year-old did so again following Sunday's friendly defeat at Leeds, hinting at widespread
Perhaps he doesn't like pink?
I will not pretend to know the complications of football contracts. There is a lot of pleasing
to be done for multiple parties, and striking that balance must be difficult. That said, the
whispers that Jussi's contract talks are not going well are worrying. I think it will be time for
him to move on (or retire) quite soon, but the fact is that right now we don't have reliable back
up for him.
Liverpool is preparing a bid for Wigan Athletic midfielder James McCarthy after a lack of progress
in his contract talks with the Latics, according to The Daily Mirror.
As exclusively revealed by Goal.com back in May, the Anfield club is interested in bringing in the
Ireland international to continue their policy of building a squad based on young British talent.

With the new season just over a fortnight away, there are still questions surrounding Arsenal as
the Gunners try to win their first silverware in six seasons.

he is playing at the minute, he obviously has a fantastic future ahead of him.
