Saturday's match against Stoke didn't provide much in the way of top quality individual
performances to look back on over the longest break between games in December or January, but
amongst the many disappointing showings was yet another quality outing for Martin Skrtel. Six
months ago fans impatiently waited for Phil Jones or Scott Dann to arrive on the transfer market
and bump the Slovak down the depth chart, and now all the rugged defender does is turn in one man
of the match calibre performance after another.
I realize this has been around for a while and has likely made the rounds, but it cracked me up.
The sad part is many youth soccer coaches have had to deal with what is said in this video, and it
can be impossible trying to get parents to understand why winning is not important when they're 10
years old.
Remember how yesterday we wrote about our friend that we're aiming to initiate into the cult of
football? (No? Read this real quick.)
Well, we emailed that link to him not only did he read the post, when we asked if he clicked
through and read the three links we posted (one each for Messi, Balotelli, Dempsey) he replied
via email (and gave us permission to blockquote):
i just read them all.
The story of The End: James Brown on the first football and music fanzine
James Brown, the man who launched Loaded magazine, reveals why he's reprinted a cult magazine
from Liverpool of the 80s ... The End. Click here to order your copy of The End compilation When I
launched Loaded magazine in 1994 there had only really been one magazine that had combined football
and music before and that was The End from Liverpool.
The end product may not be there yet, with a bad miss in the opening minutes against Swansea
highlighting that fact, but in recent weeks Andy Carroll has certainly put in a shift—and looked
far more useful for it, especially compared to the opening weeks of the season when he could at
times seem indifferent.
Clint Dempsey has been voted the Futbol de Primera USA national-team player of the year for the
second time - the last time being way back in 2006.He got 375 points and 99 first place votes .The
also rans were Tim Howard - second with 252 points and Landycakes - third with 191 points.
Dempsey scored four goals in 12 games in the U.
The insanity of Arsenal going to Stamford Bridge and beating Chelsea 5-2 may have taken up a
solid plurality of Match of the Day yesterday, leaving the runtime a little light when it
came to Liverpool versus West Brom and so robbing us of the chance to watch highlights of Charlie
Adam trying out his special edition Adidas FlubberZero boots, but for the time being it's the best
we've got.

Gael Kakuta has spoken out this week at his lack of first team opportunities so far at Bolton and
it's no surprise really. Kakuta signed for Bolton on a season long loan in the summer hoping to
follow in the footsteps of Danny Sturridge but so far has just been limited to a fantastic debut in
the league cup against Aston Villa where he scored a cracker.

This is probably one of the most random video's a club has taken the time to make about a
player. The FC Barcelona digital department must get bored during international breaks, since
practically the entire squad is called up for various national teams, so we can hardly blame them
for focusing on Daveed and his mannerisms.
In a season that has seen more than its share of less than stellar performances while discussion
about his future has pushed to the fore, the reaction to Jamie Carragher's composed performance at
Goodison on Saturday was swift and unanimous. The club's official website, never ones to shy away
from hyperbole, gauged the prevailing mood and turned things up to eleven when they skipped obvious
choices Lucas Leiva and Jose Enrique in favour of promoting a Carragher every-touch
compilation.

It is the Daily Star (a highly reputable source, obviously) which links Crystal Palace's
18-year-old attacker to Euro-giants Barcelona and Bayern, but it is still fair to say that the
Ivory Coast-born England U19 star is gaining an increasing number of high profile fans due to his
fancy footwork.
Though it's hard to claim everyone likes Barcelona, they're football is appreciated by many,
surely.
And Sergio Busquets is a very good footballer, it's hard to debate that. However, there are
probably four non-Barca fans in the world who think him not to be at least somewhat despicable.

He may be older than the desert (well, 36) and currently play football for less than the
Brazilian minimum wage, but Juninho Pernambucano (now of Vasco de Gama) can still stick away a
free-kick with the best of them.
On a weekend that also saw 105-year old Rivaldo also score for Sao Paulo in the Campeonato
Brasileiro, Juninho whipped home a trademark beauty against America MG Vasco's only goal in a 4-1
drubbing.
Sorry for the lack of substance over the past two days or so. I've been locked in a padded room
at work, Jamie's been consumed by employment, too, and Devin, well, Devin has been far too busy for
blogging. Why? He's currently on a week-long trek around London Town in which he'll be taking in,
amongst other things, a shirt signing feature EBJT and Super Frank as well as Saturday's match at
the Bridge.

Men, women...children. This video should have a lasting impact on all as quite possibly the most
cringe-worthy tackle of recent memory, if not ever. A leg-break compilation video couldn't have the
impact of one well-placed non-tackle. Which, of course, was only deserving of yellow.
When his future children are forced to walk down the street with a helmet on, you know who to
blame.

One is a retired World footballer or the Year (2003), the other was a Hollywood actor adept as a
surfer, teacher, dancer and ghost...and it just so happens that the look alike! I came to this
conclusion after watching a Pavel Nedved compilation on YouTube. With Point Break fresh on my
mind and it just clicked.
You all remember the fantastic compilation video of Landon Donovan's game-winner over Algeria in
the 2010 World Cup that sent the USA to the top of the group and to the second round. Well, the
USA's win over Brazil in the Women's World Cup Quarterfinal in Dresden was as emotional for many
fans across the USA as it was for the players, and the the same guy -- Robby Donoho (props to you,
man) -- who did the Landon video also put this one together for the WNT.
We've know for ages it was happening, and this morning it became official: Darren Pratley is a
Wanderer. But just who have we signed? He was a big name in the Championship last season, but many
of us don't follow it as closely as we should. You may have read the BN's 10 Things You Didn't Know
About Darren Pratley, which is a good start, but I think we need something a little more
comprehensive.

We could, if we lived in a vacuum in which we only communicated with the mass media, be forgiven
for thinking that football is all about the winning, the glory and the silverware at the end of the
season. For a good many football supporters, however, whole seasons can pass by without a hint of
anything exciting happening whatsoever.
For our latest post. we are delighted to welcome back Phil Ascough; his musings the result of a
debate with a mate in the pub as to which XI has most distinguished the amber and black of Hull
City. We are particularly pleased because Phil has been very busy lately on a new book, Kissing the
Badge, to be published next month but available for pre-order now.
Your not in goal now, Dempsey! If this had found the net it would be featured in every YouTube
football compilation from now until the end of time. Alas, it didn't and we will all have forgotten
about it by this time tomorrow. Still worth a watch though. Finding himself ahead of the ball at

This is certainly a surprise. In fact, Ivan himself said "I really didn't expect to the get the
call from the Slaven Bilic to ask me to come and play." He's had a fairly quiet season, as it was
hard to get an appearance in edgewise between Johan finding his scoring boots in the first half of
the season and Sturridge lighting up the second half.

One of the great things about a Liverpool victory is that we can usually expect some sort of
highlight package to filter out in the hours and days after the match has ended. It's no secret
that we're quite fond of those videos around here from the brilliance of Luis Suarez at Fulham to
the five goal romp against Birmingham, we've celebrated the opportunity to reflect on quality
performances from the squad and its individuals.
Ajax have claimed the club's 30th Dutch Eredivisie title wonderfully. The Dutch season was right
down to the wire, with the final game between Ajax and Twente deciding who would win this season's
Eredivisie. While Ajax were a point behind first-placed Twente in the table, a victory against last
season's champions would seal the Ajax their 30th title.
Beach soccer returned to party capital Miami Beach, FL last weekend with The Beach Soccer Worldwide
Miami Cup. The tournament featured Brazil, Mexico, Spain and the USA with Brazil ultimately taking
home the title. As with all things beach soccer-related, cheerleaders were on hand to keep the
crowd thoroughly entertained.
France now have a flyer on each wing.
On the left, Bayern Munich's Franck Ribery has reclaimed the mantle of France's best left-sided
attacking player, using pace and balance to charge into dangerous positions.
On the right, Roma's Jérémy Menez is a flyer, beating the leftback for pace several times in
succession, with an eye for a pass.
I've been having a lot of trouble trying to write about the result against Philadelphia Union (A
1-0 win for Philly). Therefore I've decided sidestep that result and to post a few links where you
can follow this blog around the internet. This is mainly a compilation of links that you might (but
might not) find interesting and worth visiting.

News just surfaced that we've entered into an agreement over the signing of Lucas Piazon from
Sao Paulo. Link (albeit in Portuguese) after the jump:
Fresh recruits.
I haven't necessarily tracked this kid, nor do I know much about his progress over the years.
For those that are bilingual, have a go at the official article from the Sao Paulo website
