What's Going On . . . in all these Super Cups

0
This is the Super Cup season and its coming to an end. They go by different names, e.g., Community Shield, Recopa Sudamericana, etc., and they tend to come in two forms – domestic and continental. In the domestic versions, they usually take place a week or so before the beginning of the regular season and serve as a tune-up for the upcoming season. Click to continue reading...

Portsmouth Have The Ref In Their Pocket!

1
Following our victory over Portsmouth in the Community Shield, I asked the question, tongue in cheek, whether Portsmouth paid off the refs when playing against United. In our past few matches we have seen Carlos Tevez rugby tackled in the box, whilst Cristiano Ronaldo was shoulder charged, without any consequence, then last night, Wayne Rooney [. Inter win the Supercoppa Italiana

2
Inter beat Roma 2-2 (6-5 on penalties) to win the Supercoppa Italiana. The Supercoppa is the preseason game between the winners of Serie A and the Coppa Italia from the previous season (the same way the community shield is played in England).  This was the 3rd straight meeting between Inter and Roma, with Inter winning in 2006, Roma in 2007 and now Inter in 2008. Good News For Portsmouth Whilst We’ll Struggle To Pick A Team

0
We'll be kidding ourselves if we think Portsmouth will roll over for us like they did against Chelsea at the weekend. As we saw in the Community Shield, Pompey are up for a ruck when playing against United, rugby tackles and all! Sky Sports have just delivered some good news to our next opponents: Portsmouth have [. The world's top 25 soccer clubs, Aug. 18, 2008

0
And so, it begins. The offseason, if we even had one, is now officially over. EPL clubs are back at it, the Champions League qualifiers are in the final round and the hottie interns have left the office to return to campus. The signs, in other words, are everywhere: summer is ending. But don't be sad. Click to continue reading...

COMPETITION Caption lonely Cristiano Ronaldo, win a Premier League "Classic Matches" DVD box-set

4
The best caption wins a five-disc DVD box set... Poor C-Ron: sat in the stands during Sunday's Community Shield, all alone and probably wishing he was in Madrid. Oh well, how much sympathy can you have for a man who... Click to continue reading...

Premiership Preview–3. Chelsea

1
Chelsea has not finished outside the top two in five seasons, a span in which they're averaging a mind-blowing 88.5 points a season. They've won two Premiership titles, two Carling Cups, an FA Cup, and, for what it's worth, a Community Shield, during this stretch. They have an impressive, slightly overrated in my opinion [. Things that are good

2
1. Toronto FC finally won a game -- not only that, but it was an away win! And a game they really shouldn't have won at all. They were missing a bunch of players, and they had a grand total of two shots on target -- but one of those was the only goal of the game, a gorgeous free kick by Chad Barrett. Premiership Preview--3. Chelsea

Chelsea has not finished outside the top two in five seasons, a span in which they're averaging a mind-blowing 88.5 points a season. They've won two Premiership titles, two Carling Cups, an FA Cup, and, for what it's worth, a Community Shield, during this stretch. They have an impressive, slightly overrated in my opinion because of the number of draws, unbeaten streak at home in the league -- 82 games and counting. Click to continue reading...

Soccer: The end of summer means playing vs. watching

3
Wow! What a weekend of great football and – oh by the way - what a difference a few days off from blogging will do to your numbers!

The great football I'm talking about was a long way from the Camp Nou or Old Trafford – in fact, the pitch where I spent hours watching some fantastic football was about 15 miles from my house. Click to continue reading...

Manchester United Win in Pk’s

0
Manchester United retained the FA Community Shield after being taken to a penalty shoot-out for the second year running as Portsmouth tarnished their gallant performance in the 90 minutes by failing dismally from the spot. Lassana Diarra and Glen Johnson both ballooned their efforts over the bar with substitute Arnold Mvuemba seeing his effort blocked by [. Click to continue reading...

VIDEO: Another Penalty Shoot Out Victory For United

0
The Community Shield was decided with a penalty shoot out yesterday, following a one-sided match in United's favour, that unfortunately saw all our best chances falling to Darren Fletcher. So, for the third time in a year, United took part in and won a penalty shoot out. England, take note, this is how it's done! Click to continue reading...

Community Shield thoughts

1
The league season is almost here and the FA held the Community Shield Sunday with United winning another one over Portsmouth.

Here are some thoughts from the game:
• I can not believe that FSC stopped showing the game so Webster read the lineup. Why not just run them across the bottom. Click to continue reading...

WCR Top 25 Clubs in the World - France, Scotland and Argentina Begin

2
Another week and another Top 25 ranking. As you can probably guess, this week's list has only minor modifications from last week's list. So why do it? This week, the majority of clubs in the rankings play meaningful matches, so consider this an update on what's going on for each of the top clubs in the world. Click to continue reading...

United Take First ‘Trophy’ of Season

0
It was a penalty shootout again, like last season's community shield. But at least last season saw two goals in open play. This was a 0-0 draw where United dominated possession throughout the game only to find it extremely hard to put the ball into the net. It's emblematic of United's troubles, if any. The FA Introduce New ‘Respect’ Initiative On Opening Weekend

0
The ‘Big Kick-Off' has brought with it a big kick-off for the FA's new respect for referees campaign. Branded ‘Respect', the campaign has been prominent during the opening weekend of the Football League season, and equally so at the Premier League's curtain-raiser, the Community Shield. Man United Wins Community Shield 3-1 On Penalties: Your Thoughts

6
So, Manchester United has picked up another piece of silverware after beating Portsmouth 3-1 on penalties in the annual curtain raiser to the new season. The game, which ended 0-0 in regular time, was a bit of a sleeper at times with Man United controlling large portions of the match but unable to score. Click to continue reading...

Manchester United Win the Community Shield

3
Manchester United defeated Portsmouth on penalties to win the Community Shield.  For anyone that doesn't know, the Community Shield is a game putting the previous seasons Premier League winner's against the winners of the FA Cup. Manchester played without both Cristiano Ronaldo and Wayne Rooney, and instead relied on Nani and Tevez to lead the attack. Click to continue reading...

How Long Will We All Bother with the Premier League?

1
Well, it's almost that time again. The Community Shield has gone and been futile as only it can be, the networks are booming with knee-knocking, bladder-bursting promos featuring men screaming like 19th century parsons about Passion, Glory and Honour, the English leftwing cranks are crying hell and damnation at the prospect of another eight-month orgy of misspent wealth, and the technocrats Click to continue reading...

Brazilians set to dislodge United old guard?...

3
United welcomed club captain Gary Neville back into the first team for the Community Shield curtain raiser on Sunday, it was a fairly comfortable afternoon for Neville & Co in the Reds back four with Portsmouth's new strike force of Crouch and Defoe failing to hit the high notes on what was a pretty forgettable day for Pompey and their fans.
