The MLS individual awards race is heating up! Even though we shouldn't give this things out until
after the playoffs. Remember all those Houston Dynamo players we had on the Best XI last year? And
all those DC United players we had the year before that?
Kristian Dyer nominates Schelotto, Thornton, Keller, Joseph, Montero and Donovan as the MVP
frontrunners - Landon's his pick at the moment, with which I agree.
Seattle Sounders forward Fredy Montero won the Newcomer of the Year award and Chivas USA goalkeeper
Zach Thornton won the Comeback Player of the Year Major League Soccer announced on Monday. Thornton
also won the Goalkeeper of the Year award. MLS Newcomer of the Year Winners 2009: Fredy Montero –

United MLS Comeback Player of the Year Winners 2009: Zach.
It was announced yesterday that Fire forward Brian McBride has been nominated as a finalist for
the 2009 MLS Comeback Player of the Year award.
McBride, who is competing with D.C. United midfielder Ben Olsen and Chivas USA keeper Zach
Thornton for the award, lead the Fire in scoring with seven goals this season despite missing eight
weeks with a torn right labrum.

In one of the easier results to see coming, Seattle Sounders striker Fredy Montero was named MLS
Newcomer of the Year. He beat out Sounders teammates Kasey Keller and Freddie Ljungberg for the
honor.
Montero scored 12 goals and added seven assists in helping lead the Sounders to the
playoffs.

It seems like every season or so we get one club that comes out hot to start the season then to
only fade in the summer. In 2009 it was Chivas USA who was just that club as they went 7-2-3 to
start the first couple months of the season.
The Metro Reverse Curse lives.
What is the Reverse Curse? It is a temporary suspension of all footballing ability while wearing
a Metro Bull kit that is magically cured once a player switches kits to another club. There are so
many examples of this, but sticking to recent memory (and not in any order of importance at all);
Hunter Freeman leaves Red Bull and has become a regular starter in Norway,
Gabriel Cichero leaves Red Bull and becomes a valuable piece of their National
teams youth movement, Mike Magee has proven to be a key offensive cog in the
Galaxy's overall make up leading the team in assists, Diego Jimenez continues to
excel in Mexico, and notched two goals upon arriving back to his country after his RB
departure.

• Can the Fire make up their one-goal playoff deficit this Saturday?
Add another award for Zach Thornton on the season. Today the league named Thornton it's Comeback
Player of the Year. At the same time the league also announced Fredy Montero as the Newcomer of the
Year.
Montero was one of the league leaders in goals scored this year. His 12 goals on the season blew
away any other newcomer in that category.
It's one of the more pointless awards MLS hands out, but for what it's worth the reigning MLS
Goalkeeper of the Year beat out the Chicago Fire's Brian McBride (who may have stopped playing in
MLS, but never stopped playing excellent attacking soccer - is he available next year in South
Africa?) and D.
First off, congrats to Sounders FC forward Fredy Montero on being named MLS Newcomer of the Year.
I'm note sure he wasn't the second-best newcomer on his own team, but it's a nice honor for the kid
(who has definitely had an up-and-down year).
Also, Chivas USA goalkeeper Zach Thornton pulled in his second award in being named MLS Comeback
Player of the Year.
Comeback player - Lance WatsonLance was injured at the beginning of last year and never really got
going. This year, he was able to secure a starting role at right back (not his natural position)
and held it until Vermes took over.Coach of the Year – John PascarellaAs the goalkeeper coach, he
worked with all of the keepers far more extensively than his predecessor.
