In perhaps the best story of the young baseball season, Jamie Moyer has won a starting spot with
the Colorado Rockies. Moyer, who is 49 years old, will start Colorado's second game of the season.
And don't be confused, this isn't a charity case. Moyer has been great in spring training, posting
an impressive ERA of 2.

Time for the final preseason "Monday After" post of 2012. Once the regular season starts next,
the Monday After will focus on MLS attendance and a couple of major business story lines from the
weekend. We'll start this post with a look at the tournaments that wrapped up over the weekend.
In Tucson, the final of the Desert Diamond Cup was played to a scoreless draw between the Galaxy
and Revolution.
Shocking move by the Colorado Rockies who fired coach Gary Smith. What makes this decision such
a head scratcher is that Smith led the Rapids to their first MLS Cup less than a year ago.
Managing director Jeff Plush said Monday that he decided not to renew Smith's contract, which
ended after the season.
Now that the baseball season is over, it's time to start handing out the hardware for the
regular season awards. Let's start in the National League with the Most Valuable Players award.
Here's a look at our top five National League MVP candidates including our NL MVP winner:

Last year's NL MVP comes in fifth place this season.
Denver is a funky place. The last time I was in the Rocky Mountain city I was 12-years-old, on
my way to a family vacation in Steamboat Springs, Colorado. In many ways Denver reminds me of
Seattle without the constant presence of water. There are beautiful vistas on all sides of you,
with the mountains looming large over the city.
Last week I mentioned that the promoters of a proposed series of MLS pre-season matches in Tucson
were still looking for a stadium in town. Yesterday the Arizona Daily Star reported that the city
did in fact give permission to have the matches at Hi Corbett Field, a baseball stadium in the
central part of Tucson.
Over the weekend I had heard about a MLS preseason match between Sporting KC and the New York Red
Bulls in Tucson, but hadn't written a post about it. It's probably a good thing that I was late in
reporting it, because the promoters of the match are still looking for a venue in town. The issue
is that Hi Corbett Field, which was originally advertised as the site of the match, is rented by
the Colorado Rockies for their MLB preseason, and the chances that the Rockies, who rent the
stadium, and the City of Tucson, who own it,.
Carlos Gonzalez is about to sign an extension with the Colorado Rockies worth $80 million over
seven seasons. Reportedly, the only thing holding up the deal is a physical. If the Rockies lock up
Gonzalez, that will be another step forward in terms of locking up their nucleus.
Earlier in the offseason, the Rockies gave Troy Tulowitzki a contract worth nearly $158
million.
