Its been a long while since I updated this projected order, mainly because I knew there would be a
slew of trades that would come down to shake up this order. And let's be honest, we've seen plenty
of deals this year that included draft picks. With Monday's trade deadline looming, I figured we
could bring [.
Ah, the names that might have been....
While we wait for Philadelphia to decide on a name we look back on some attempts to name or rebrand
current MLS clubs.
Yes we all laughed at Penn Jersey Independence FC but there are other names which could have stuck
elsewhere around the league.
As we've reported here before, it appears USA and Colorado Rapids midfielder Pablo Mastroeni is set
for a move to Europe in January, the only question is where.
While a handful of Italian clubs (such as Cagliari, Catania, and Palermo) have been whispered to
have interest, LFV friend Nick Thomas is reporting that interest is also coming from Spain's Real
Betis and Malaga.
So it's the day after the Los Angeles Galaxy's awful 3-1 loss to Chicago on Thursday and you're
probably wondering where the Galaxy will go from here. I can tell you where at least one of their
players is.
None other than David Beckham is in New York City today along with wife Victoria to promote
their fragrance lines.
Six months after bolting from Scottish football for the friendly confines of Dick's Sporting Goods
Park, Tom McManus took some time in an interview with the Edinburgh Evening News to reflect on his
move, the sport's growing influence in America, and what the future holds. The 27-year-old striker
was first signed to the Colorado Rapids earlier this year, after the club invited him to play in a
pair of friendlies while training at Arsenal's facilities in Hertfordshire.

So who is the most wanted man in Major League Soccer? No, this isn't a David Beckham joke. The
answer, it turns out, is Kansas City Wizards technical director Peter Vermes. Less than a month
after turning down an offer to become general manager of the Los Angeles Galaxy, now comes word
that he has turned down an MLS head coaching job.
The Los Angeles Galaxy is one of three Major League Soccer franchises that turned a net profit in
2007, according to a new valuation report put together by Forbes. The independent study, which uses
past transactions as its guide, sheds a great deal of light on the relatively mysterious finances
of the league, a subject left to debate in the past due to a lack of substantive information
offered up by MLS.
Forbes.com recently released a report that looked at the economic side of MLS and also put a value
on each of the Major League Soccer franchises. At a macro level, things are looking up for MLS.
Seven of the league's 14 teams play in soccer-specific stadiums, five of which have been built
since 2002.
Week 27 of Major League Soccer's regular season is now in the books, but the playoff picture is not
much clearer now than it was before the weekend began. For the first time in weeks, four teams from
the Western Conference would make the postseason if it started today.
* Columbus has now moved eight points clear in the race for the Supporters Shield and could clinch
the trophy given to the team with the regular season's best record as soon as this weekend if a
host of other results fall their way.
With the Galaxy down to one healthy goalkeeper in Josh Weeks after Charles Alamo and now Steve
Cronin suffered what Coach Bruce Arena effectively regards as season-ending injuries, he is calling
in reinforcements in the shape of former Colorado Rapids draft pick Mike Graczyk, a former
University of New Mexico standout now in the MLS pool of goalkeepers retained for just this purpose
(so no Kasey Keller on loan then, I guess).
Official press release from the Colorado Rapids:
The Colorado Rapids today announced the signing of midfielder Kwame Sarkodie. Per league and team
policy, details of the contract were not disclosed.
Sarkodie has played with the Rapids Reserves in their past two matches both in the midfield and as
a defender.

One team is in desperate need of some offensive help while the other team might just be raising
the white flag.
That's one way to look at the Colorado Rapids trading of forward Herculez Gomez to Kansas City
for allocation money and draft picks (4th rounder and 1st round supplemental in '09).
Two come from behind goals to tie the game, one goal for the lead, and the home result? Zero
points. Ouch.
Last year, Bruce Arena was highly criticized for his inability to field a
consistent squad week in and week out. Coach Osorio is beginning to get an earful
for the same.
The past couple of days got me thinking, this year we've seen so many trades between the clubs.
Some moves have paid off and others have been more of a waste than anything. I felt like today was
a good day to look back at the moves that have paid off and the moves that [...]
In what has to be considered one of the more-complicated MLS trades in recent memory, Toronto FC
has acquired defender Hunter Freeman from the New York Red Bulls until the end of the next season
in exchange for third- and fourth-round draft picks in the 2009 MLS Supplemental Draft, a move club
officials announced on Friday.
Here's the press release:
Commerce City, CO (Sports Network) - The Colorado Rapids have signed
midfielder Kwame Sarkodie, the Major League soccer team announced Tuesday. Per league and club
policy, details of the contract were not disclosed.
Overseas interest in Colorado Rapids midfielder Pablo Mastroeni is at an all-time high right now,
with two possible countries emerging as his most likely destination for next year: Spain and
Italy.Mastroeni has always spoken of his desire to ply his trade in Europe before he calls it a
career. Italian club Cagliari has expressed interest in the US international midfielder in the
past, as have several Serie B clubs, but the newest teams to enter the hunt are reportedly Spain's
Malaga and Real Betis.
Holy Crap! Victory is ours. The Colorado Rapids went all the way down to Texas and
beat FC Dallas 1-0. The team's first away victory since April. In a week that saw us down in the
dumps having lost another road game against Salt Lake and in which we said goodbye to a fan
favorite, a header from Mike Petke (where was the Dallas defense?

Throughout Mike Petke's Metrostars career a sign draped the wall at Giants Stadium which read
Petke Power. For my money no lasting image of MLS early years was more vivid and more poignant than
that sign. Mike Petke in fact has been one of the better defenders in MLS during his entire
career.
One thing that may be sneaking up on everyone is next Monday's trade deadline. Yup, Major League
Soccer is just like every other American sports league by having a trade deadline. The big question
is who is left to be traded at this point? - New York is looking for a striker within the league.
We've known [.
Nick at We Want Rapid Man takes a look at Bouna's situation. The Denver Post also covers it here.
It looks to be headed down the same path that lead Herculez Gomez to Kansas City. Will things turn
around? Will we see Bouna in nets for the Rapids again? Or could we see him traded to a team
looking for a goalkeeper?
John Conway looks absolutely mental in this photo. It's the crazy eyes. It makes him look like he
is quite prepared to do what Iron Mike Tyson would only threaten to do and literally eat your
children. But hey, if that psycho-stare of his is enough to keep Colorado from putting 4 past them
like last time, run with it.
When it comes to stadium naming rights, I suppose you can't do worse than FC Dallas's Pizza Hut
Park. Or The Colorado Rapids' Dick's Sporting Goods Park, which will be affectionately known,
forever, as "The Dick." But I think Real Salt Lake has to get the award for Most Unusual
Sponsor for their [.
Chivas USA defender Shavar Thomas has been called up by the Jamaican National Team for a pair of
upcoming World Cup Qualifying matches against Mexico and Honduras.Thomas has made 14 appearances
for the red-and-white in 2008, playing 1148 minutes this season for the club. He will miss Chivas
USA's CONCACAF Champions League match against Panama's Tauro FC on Tuesday, as well as the team's
league match at Toronto this weekend.
Not a whole lot of change this week in the WVH Power Rankings. The Labor Day weekend saw the Crew
go on top of the standing and the Rapids fall to the bottom of the standings. In regards to the
standings here on WVH, it is pretty much the same on top as it is [...]
Stan Kroenke's possible takeover attempt on Arsenal a few years back has paid dividends for
Kroenke's MLS side, Colorado Rapids. As part of the agreement when Kroenke bought into Arsenal, a
partnership was developed with the MLS team which includes the development of a youth academy at
DSG Park, the home of the Denver outfit, [.
For a few teams in Major League Soccer, their chances of reaching the playoffs this season are
rapidly fading away. Other clubs have little or not doubt that they are in and a few are actually
battling things out here in the final stages of the season. Just as mentioned in the Power Rankings
this morning, [.
There's a nice write-up about Bouna Coundoul in the Denver Post (link below) and
how he is caught between a rock and a hard place both at home and with the Senegal national team.
He's saying all the right things about being happy as a deputy to Preston Burpo
but it is clear how frustrated he is at being on the bench both for the Colorado
Rapids and Senegal.
Thanks to an MLSR reader we now have an answer to a burning question we have had since we
started..."Where are the Colorado Celebrity Fans???" Of course looking at most games at
Dicks Sporting Goods park the question paled in importance to ones like, "When will Fernando
Clavijo get the sack?, "Why is Colorado's best player, Christian Gomez riding the bench?
Stop the presses, the Los Angeles Galaxy finally won a game! Yes, the MLS's flagship team ended a
three month winless streak to beat D.C. United this week. This is a a look at this weekends games
in Major League Soccer and how the playoff run is shaping up. LA Galaxy 5 D.C. United 2 Landon
Donovan [.
Did the Los Angeles Galaxy sell damaged goods to Toronto FC? That's how it is starting to look as
the Canadian club revealed that striker Carlos Ruiz has been hobbled by a recurring knee injury and
will undergo an MRI to reveal the complete extent of the damage. The Guatemalan forward missed a
day of training last week in order to get the troublesome knee drained, and was held out of
practice again on Tuesday, prompting the need for further evaluation.
Pablo Mastroeni, club captain of the Colorado Rapids, is getting
closer to his dream of playing in Europe. This week, he has received calls, via his representative
in Spain and Italy, from two clubs in Spain - Malaga and Seville's Real Betis. The offers are good,
says Pablo, but much remains on the table.
The Colorado Rapids, unbeaten in the past three games, are now headed to New York
for a tough game on the turf against the Red Bulls. Much has been made of the consistency of the
team in those recent games. Unfortunately, injuries mean there will have to be some changes in
tomorrow night's line-up.
What can we really say about how things are going this season in Major League Soccer. From week to
week we find a new club to move up the charts or a move down the charts. All it takes is a victory
to do so with the jam packed standings these days. After 23 weeks [...]
Toronto FC has signed forward Chad Barrett to a four-year extension, club officials announced
Wednesday. Barrett was brought in by Toronto on July 27th as part of the deal that sent Brian
McBride's rights to the Chicago Fire; Toronto also received a 2009 first-round draft pick and
conditional future considerations in the trade.

This is one of those weekends that make you happy to be a soccer fan.
One of those weekends when the stars align and the European soccer schedules come together to
give you a full menu of intense match-ups and can't-miss rivalries. It is Derby Weekend this
weekend, with Milan, Liverpool and Barcelona treating us to the best their cities have to
offer.
I'm trying not to make this such a Columbus love fest here but when your hot it has to be noted and
right now the Columbus Crew are indeed hot. The main reason is because of the way things are
clicking on the offensive side of the ball and also to a degree on the [...]
Kansas City in this case. The Colorado Rapids today traded Herculez
Gomez to the Kansas City Wizards. I am personally gutted because Herc was always
approachable and a damn fine footballer to boot. More details to follow.
Kansas City Wizards have traded for Colorado striker Herculez Gomez today according to the Denver
Post. Colorado will ship the 26-year old Gomez to KC in exchange for a forth round pick in the 2009
MLS SuperDraft and first-round pick in the '09 supplemental draft as well as undisclosed amount of
money.
