Colorado Rapids: Fernando Clavijo. As someone who grew up watching Clavijo, I
lost all respect I had for him on May 9, 2001, When it became clear (after about 10 minutes)
that his Revs were about to be overrun, he sat there and made no tactical adjustments until
halftime, when it was 3-0. Clavijo has shown that he has learned nothing in six years.
Not to go all nelly on all y'all - though I can do that from time to time - Fire_Juve10 acted as my
muse for today. After reading (and saying nice things about...yay!) my post on last weekend's
Chicago v. Columbus, he listed Chicago's upcoming games. Prior to seeing those, I would have
listed Chicago [...]
Chicago Fire 1-1 FC Dallas
So what do you think the Fire coaching staff is talking to Calen Carr and Paulo Wanchope about
today? If it is anything but how to keep the ball and waste time at the end of a match, then the
Fire are doomed. This was not a pretty game as neither side had much ball control. Again and again,
passes were intercepted and knocked out of bounce.
Welcome to my first crack at posting team news from all-'round Major League Soccer (MLS). What
comes below will be by no means exhaustive; really, it's only a compilation of what I bumped into
during my travels. And, of course, anyone feeling I made a grave omission is welcome to correct
that in [...]
The Semi-Detached Pundit Collective (SDPC) has spoken - this time with what I perceive as a greater
sense of certainty and unanimity. That's a little surprising because we lost three contributors
from last week (late again, Ryan Hunt? Tsk, tsk, tsk), while gaining one. Getting back to
seeming signs of harmony, the devil is in [...]
With it looking a whole lot like no current head coach in Major League Soccer (MLS) will lose their
job by the end of the year, now seems a good time to look at who might suffer the fatal blow after
the(ir respective team's) season ends. Coming after the season, this is less a [...]
Did Week 25 seem wholly educational or what? Well, educational in the sense that we have new data
to weigh, but one hesitates to call it clarifying or entirely enlightening. Can't pretend I caught
all 90 of all the games (for the record, I watched RSL v. Colorado and Chivas v. KC), but, on the
principle [...]
While I'm generally out of the "shout-out" game, I thought I'd add to my million-points-at-once
coverage of Week 25 by linking to some other reports from fellow bloggers...maybe I'll try to
figure the mainstream outlets into the coverage for next week... FC Rocky did a totally killer
big-picture-plus examination of the Rapids (shameful, shameful) loss to [.
Weeks go by that end with a sense of rest well-earned. The news-tap runs at a trickle and the stage
looks ready for the show, leaving one free to idly lean back and take it in. And that makes it
something of a shame that Major League Soccer's (MLS) Week 23 isn't quite doing it [...]
I've been struggling to come up with a theme for the past week's action in Major League Soccer
(MLS). "Big Cities Rising," "Eastern Conference (and Chivas) Rising": none of them quite captured
the essential dynamic of the week with the due touch of "pizzazz!" And writing out "DC and Chivas
are really good; everyone else, [...]
The word on the street is that the Rapids coach Fernando Clavijo wanted to trade for Kansas City's
Sasha Victorine before the Sept 15th deadline. What and who was he offering? Two 2nd year players
from the Rapids - Colin Clarke and Jacob Peterson. No word on if KC was willing to pull the trigger
on this one or not. It's a moot point though. The way it was it was told, it was the Rapids FO that
overruled Clavijo.
Ya know...since posting this last week, it occurs to me this would pretty easy to update. And, to
think, I used to come across things like this on BigSoccer and whisper to myself, "holy shit, dude,
get a life." Now I'm that dude with no life it doesn't feel so bad - and it's a [...]
Thanks to FC Rocky for reminding us of the double header for the Rapids on October 7th.
LET'S TRY THIS AGAIN: The Rapids Reserves will face the Toronto FC Reserves on
Oct. 7 on the back end of a doubleheader with the first team at Dick's Sporting Goods Park. Fans
holding tickets to the Rapids game will be able to stay for free for the reserve game.
Game restarted. It's on FSN West.
Seven points seperate the team in 7th place with the team in 10th place in the MLS single table.
The Wizards sit on 36 points, while the Colorado Rapids are siting on 29 points. In between, the
Chicago Fire are on 32 points, while the Columbus Crew sit on 31.
Four playoff spots have already been clinched, and FC Dallas and the Red Bulls look to be safe
enough where they'll make it as well.
I don't keep close tabs on the Colorado Rapids. I guess if I had insomnia I might watch one of
their archived games on MLSnet.com.
Anyway, I recently wondered about Daniel Osorno. I saw him play one game with the Rapids but since
they've been out of my sight for a while, I don't remember him distinguishing himself much with
Colorado.
I ran across this story on mediotiempo.
Apparently there are people in KSE who aren't happy with blogs like this one that don't walk the
party line. Apparently they don't have very thick skin. When things happen like the Colorado Rapids
only winning 10 of 40 games and fans, including people at Black Panther, start calling for a new
coach some people at KSE get offended. Is Kroenke Sport Enterprises shocked that the very public
businesses they own would end up having all sorts of people criticizing how they're managed?
FC Rocky has a good take on the Crew - Rapids game from Sunday. I agree that Conor Casey looked
good. He's finally match fit and seems to be healthy (knock-on-wood). If he can continue to play as
he has it will show why Colorado gave Toronto a major allocation to bring him back to his home
town.
The visitor's box, that is. Rapids forward Conor Casey, who has battled an inflamed knee this
season, got into the elevator after the Galaxy/Rapids game ended to go down to the locker
rooms.
"They could have used you today, Conor," I told him.
He nodded. "Yeah. I wanted to be there. I thought, maybe I'd get to make the bench, in case they
need me.
Sorry I'm a little late with this audio but hopefully it's still pertinent.
Colorado fell hard to the Galaxy on Saturday. What made it a bit strange was that the Rapids had
won 3-0 just two weeks earlier against basically the same Galaxy side - no Landon Donovan, no David
Beckham - yet this time the tables were turned.
Fernando Clavijo blamed the Rapids' poor finishing.
As Clint at The Offside points out, the Rapids still have a chance to make the play-offs. But as we
now know, the Rapids lost to the Los Angeles Galaxy 3-1. Exactly what sort of chance does a team
have to make the play-offs when they get spanked by the worst team in the league?
Note to The Offside : I've tried comments while at work, at home and now from a new lap top
while in Gunnison, Colorado the blog software being used flagged my comments as "Spam".
I'm in Salt Lake City for the Real Salt Lake - Colorado Rapids game in just a few hours. It's
raining out with a 50% chance of rain throughout the rest of the evening. It's in the mid 60s so
not too bad but not too great. Going into this game with the Rapids injuries I had a feeling they'd
play it safe and try to grind out a draw. Wait, let me phrase that more optimistically, I had a
feeling going into this game the Rapids would approach the game cautiously, make sure their
opponents didn't score and choose when to go forward wisely.
DC United, New England Revolution, Chivas USA and defending champions Houston Dynamo have all
claimed their playoff spots.
As the table stands right now the wildcards would be FC Dallas, New York Red Bulls, Kansas City
Wizards and the Chicago Fire.
The Columbus Crew are only 1 point behind the Chicago Fire for the last spot, and behind them
are the Colorado Rapids who are only 3 points back from the Fire.
By way of trying something unusual this week, I'll tackle this week's rankings haiku style. As
always, last week's ranking appears in parentheses after this week's ranking and, in a new(-ish)
twist, current points (drawn from the ever-helpful standings) and each team's upcoming game(s) are
listed as well. 1. (1) DC United (50 points) Valiant fighters; stand firmly [.
It's that time of year again. Major League Soccer's season is winding down and the last spots in
the playoffs are being decided. There is one thing about this time of year that really bothers me
though, the cliched statement about peaking too soon.
I don't have an issue with cliches as a whole. They're often useful in us having a common
language to describe what is going on.
