Colombia 1-0 USA
The US men slumped their way out of Copa America tonight with a disappointing 1-0 defeat at the
hands of Colombia. The lose gives the side 0 points from their matches with a goal difference of
-6, thus making us the worst team in the Copa.
As far as tonight's game, sloppy would be kind. The Nats did not sustain pressure at any point nor
could they put together more then two or three passes at a time.

As a U.S. Soccer supporter, I'm VERY glad this Copa America experience is over because it sure was
painful. Yes, there were moments where our "inexperienced internationals" looked cohesive,
competitive and even, at times, dominating. But when it came to putting the ball in the back of the
net, we were nothing short of pathetic. Seriously, [...]
I've delayed writing this, as I've been trying to figure out who was worth giving it to. When the 3
finalists were posted on bigsoccer, I didn't think either of the 3 choices were worth choosing.
Yura Movsisyan scored 2 goals in the month of June. Those 2 goals came in the same game, though.
Outside that I didn't see him doing anything worthy of giving him the man of the month award.

In what seems to be a good solid push towards the post season, the Chicago Fire have gone out and
signed another foreign player. Colombian international midfielder/defender Wilman Conde has signed
with the Fire pending visa approval and an open roster spot. The 24-year-old Conde has been with
Millonarios in the Mustang Cup first division since [...]
Great Colombian coach Francisco Maturana managed to govern Gimnasia de La Plata only for 12
matches, of which "El Lobo" lost seven. He has been replaced with another famous coach, Julio Cesar
Falcioni.
Fullback of Colombian Millionarios, Wilman Conde moves to Chicago Fire. The transfer costed to MLS
club $300k.

USA (0pts) vs. Colombia (0pts)
The final Copa America match for both these sides is about to kickoff and although it is not
important in many ways, this is not a junk match. The US need to get a win out of this to have
anything good to say about their trip down south.
Anyway, here are the starting lineups.

As Lefties around the world payed their respect today on account of the 40th anniversary of Ernesto
Guevara's death, it doesn't hurt to look at the connection el Che had with soccer. Well before he
met his demise in the little Bolivian village of La Higuera, Guevara not only enjoyed playing
soccer, but rugby as well. During his famous travels through South America, retold in his book "The
Over at Top Drawer Soccer, Rebecca Thatcher Murcia has published two articles that provide some
insight into how youth soccer is played in Colombia. She and her two sons moved there to be near

Colombian fullback of Inter Nelson Rivas has been suspended for one month due to cardiological
problems. If further examination detects serious problems with player's heart, he won't be able to
play in Italy, since the local clubs bear criminal responsibility for their players' health.
Former Colombian international Carlos Valderrama could be sitting on another bench in the near
future after the incidents that occurred over a week ago between the former player and FIFA referee
Oscar Julián Ruíz.
Valderrama, assistant coach at Junior, flashed a 50,000 peso bill (25 dollars) insinuating that he
was "bought". The referee pressed charges and his agent and former Colombian General Attorney
Jaime Bernal Cuéllar made the announcement on RCN Radio earlier today.

Day 2 proved me wrong too, so now I'm 0-for-4 now... meh, all surprises in some way.
Chile beat Ecuador 3-2 in a game that I couldn't watch, and in a rather high-scoring one, unlike my
predicted scorelessness. But the goals did in general come as the result of mistakes in defense
(except Chile's 3rd on a free kick), either in marking or pressing, rather than from some piece of
genius.
Day 3 is over, and the high scoring continues at the Copa. The average was raised to 4 goals per
game by today's 5-goal matches.
Santa Cruz scored a hat-trick in Paraguay's stunning 5-0 victory over Colombia, with Cabañas
adding the last two. Colombia's defense had several mental lapses, with Calero and Córdoba
surprisingly shaky for their experience, and Paraguay's offense was impressively effective, making
the most out of the opponent's mistakes.
Argentina, Paraguay and (indirectly) Venezuela all qualified for the Copa América quarterfinals on
Day 6. I only watched part of the 2nd half of the Argentina-Colombia game and none of Paraguay-US,
but this is what I gather from elsewhere:
Paraguay's 3-1 win was somewhat even, except the US offense sucked and Paraguay's didn't. I can't
say more.
The group stage is over and the QF matchups are now set. Only two goals on the most irrelevant of
days, continuing the scoring deficiencies of the last round of games. After 24 goals in the first
six matches and 19 in the following six, only 7 were scored in the past three days.
Colombia beat the US 1-0 and nothing changed. Highlights: Castrillón scored on a header; sub
keeper Guzan stopped Rodallega's penalty kick (second Colombian missed PK of the tournament); and
Rodallega had to play goalie at the end after Zapata got sent off on a second yellow for time
wasting (yes, time wasting in such an important game).
Famous Colombian Freddy Rincon, who, as we informed, was arrested by Brazilian police in connection
to accusations in narcotraffic, has been released. In his interview the ex-star of Corinthians and
Santos declared his innocence and attacked the chiefs of Santos who owe him 12 million reals.

The scenario was set for one of the most consistent sides playing arguably the best team in the
world. For Jorge Luis Pinto, it was a culminating moment that saw him laugh last as the 2007 year
concludes for the Colombian national team.
El Campín began to show its predominance as a hostile environment.
