Arsenal defender Per Mertesacker admits that the pace and physicality of English football is pressurizing for players from other parts of the world but argues that the media is not nearly as intrusive as portrayed at times.

The English press is often criticized for exaggerating issues or taking statements out of context but Mertesacker, who arrived from Werder Bremen last year, does not consider this to be an issue, particularly considering the more intrusive role of the media in his native Germany.

Arsenal defender Per Mertesacker is confident that the arrival of compatriot Lukas Podolski over the summer will go a long way in changing the team's reputation as one that cracks easily under pressure.

The Gunners' fragile reputation is largely attributable to seven straight years without a trophy with a relatively inexperienced squad that has lost influential stars such as Thierry Henry, Cesc Fabregas, and Samir Nasri over the course of the dry spell.

Weird scenes inside the goldmine RheinEnergieStadion, where the Cologne fans didn't take their relegation down to the 2.Bundesliga yesterday afternoon particularly gracefully throwing smoke bombs, lighting fires and charging the pitch after their side's 1-4 defeat to Bayern Munich.

Cologne's final match of the season started with a nice send-off for Arsenal new boy Lu-Lu-Lu Lukas Podolski. Then they lost 4-1 to Bayern Munich, sealing their relegation and everything turned black.

After Thomas Muller scored Bayern's fourth in the 85th minute, Cologne fans started setting off black smoke bombs that prompted the referee to end the match a little early so the players could run for cover.

As rumoured a little while back, it has now been revealed that Arsenal have agreed a deal to sign German striker Lukas Podolski.

Podolski, of Cologne, was to become a free-agent at the end of the season so his club have decided to cash in on the player now instead of risking losing him for nothing in a few weeks time.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has spoken of his delight after completing the protracted capture of Germany striker Lukas Podolski from Cologne.

Podolski will join the Gunners in the summer after agreeing personal terms and passing a medical. No word yet on the transfer fee.

Markus Babbel is a welcome guest in Munich. Markus Babbel is a young promising Bundesliga coach, who has done reasonably well at his clubs so far. That is, as long as he doesn't have to pay a visit to his former club. His Hertha side conceded three goals in 13 minutes earlier this season.

Lu-Lu-Lu Lukas Podolski was sent off for the first time in his Bundesliga career during Cologne's 1-0 win over Hertha Berlin on Saturday. The reason for his red card was questionable at best, though. When Hertha's Levan Kobiashvili grabbed him by the back of the neck, Podolski put his head down and pushed Kobiashvili off of him.
