In June, when Universidad de Chile lost the first leg of the Apertura final to bitter rivals Universidad Católica 2-0, everybody expected Católica, Copa Libertadores quarter-finalist and building on last year's title-winning form, would have no trouble sealing the win in the second leg, especially when they'd have to lose the second leg by three goals to not win the tournament, in accordance with new rules favouring the higher play-off seed.

Brazilians Santos FC will participate in their first ever FIFA Club World Cup and are hoping to take the title back to South America after a five year period of domination for European clubs. Santos FC, who are based in Brazil's second city of São Paulo, will face the winner of the quarter-final between Japanese champions Kashiwa Reysol and North and Central American CONCACAF Champions League winners Monterrey CF on December 14th.

Universidad de Chile made club history last night by reaching their first ever continental final in South America. The Chilean champions defeated Brazilian giants Vasco da Gama in last night's Copa Sudamericana semi-final 2nd leg by two goals to nil and, thus, went through 3-1 on aggregate.

Gustavo Canales and Eduardo Vargas were on hand to score the goals for Universidad who became the first Chilean team to reach a major final of a South American club competition since Colo Colo played in the final of the Sudamericana in 2006.

Hace 20 años atrás Colo-Colo fue el primer equipo chileno en ganar la Copa Libertadores. Y ahora esta a un paso de repetir la historia en su categoría femenina.
El domingo 27 de noviembre a las 11:00 hrs (hora chilena), comenzarán los 90 minutos que podrían llevar a las dirigidas de José Letelier, a hacer historia.

El equipo femenino albo comenzó dubitativo pero se recuperó para golear por 4-1 a Caracas, consiguiendo así su paso a la final del torneo continental. Su rival será el vencedor entre los brasileños Sao José y Santos, el último campeón del certamen.
No fue fácil.

Barcelona have confirmed an agreement has been reached over the signing of Udinese's Chilean forward Alexis Sanchez on a 26 million euro transfer. The deal also includes a potential 11.5 million euros in add-ons.

"Udinese and FC Barcelona have reached a final agreement for the transfer of Alexis Sanchez," Barca said in a statement.

It has been a protracted transfer that seemed to be going on for ever, bt Barcelona have announced that they have finally signed Udinese's Chilean forward Alexis Sanchez for 26 million euros with a potential 11.5 million euros in add-ons.

"Udinese and FC Barcelona have reached a final agreement for the transfer of Alexis Sanchez," Barca said in a statement.

It has been a long road for Santos this year in the Copa Libertadores. This was Santos' first campaign since 2008, when they exited at the quarter final stage.

Game of the week - 22 April 2011 On 21 April 2011 Chilean side Colo-Colo hosted Cerro Porteño of Paraguay in the last game in group five of Copa Libertadores 2011. Both sides had been struggling in their own domestic leagues but this game would give the winners a chance to progress to the knockout stages of Copa Libertadores.

Brazil's Cruzeiro grabbed the top seed into the knockout stages after romping to another win this past week, Ecuador's Liga de Quito took first in its group following an emphatic home victory and supporters for Uruguay's Penarol unfurled what should be the soccer world's largest banner as the Copa Libertadores reaches its final week of group-stage play.

I am still travelling and in two days will start blogging back to normal. However, these goals worth posting, especially Dragan Stankovic amazing volley after only 25 seconds. I am sure you all seen it, but I cannot leave it not posted :)

Game of the week - 8 April 2011 When Santos hosted Colo-Colo in group five of Copa Libertadores 2011 few people would have expected the game to be as enthralling as the 3-2 win for Colo-Colo in the reverse fixture. If anything Santos' 3-2 win in the return fixture was even more action packed, with five goals, five red cards and a host of other incidents.

07.04.2011 - Demasiado consciente de las cámaras y los rebotes mediáticos de su (ascendente) imagen, Neymar fabrica espectáculo y sigue sumando páginas en los medios.

In the first round of games in Group 5 of the 2011 Copa Libertadores Paraguayan side Cerro Porteño put on a magnificent display to crush Colo-Colo of Chile 5-2. One of the highlights of the game was 17 year old Argentine born forward Juan Manuel Iturbe's Copa Libertadores debut as a second half substitute, he lived up to expectation hitting two goals.
