Six Sign Letters of Intent to Join Virginia Men's Soccer
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Virginia men's soccer head coach George Gelnovatch has
announced the signing of six highly-touted student-athletes to National Letters of Intent for the
2012-13 school year.
Creighton senior forward Ethan Finlay (Marshfield) collected another All-American honor,
while Marquette midfielder Calum Mallace added his first.
Finlay was a first-team choice and Mallace made the second team of the College Soccer News
team.
On Friday, Finlay was named to the top team of the National Soccer Coaches Association of
America NCAA Division I men's All-America team and was announced as one of three finalists for the
Missouri Athletic Club Hermann Trophy, awarded to the country's top player.
The No. 19 University of Denver men's soccer team opens the regular season against No. 6
Creighton at CIBER Field on Saturday at 7 p.m.
The Pioneers earned a pair of draws last weekend against Wisconsin and Ohio State in exhibition
games.
Denver returns 17 letterwinners, including eight starters, from a squad that won the Mountain
Pacific Sports Federation regular season championship in 2010 and earned an at-large berth into the
NCAA Tournament, the team's second in the past three seasons.
Ethan Finlay (Marshfield) heads into his senior season with great
expectations.
The Creighton forward was named to the College Soccer News Preseason All-America team for the
second straight year.
Finlay was the Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Year and a semifinalist for the Missouri
Athletic Club's Hermann Trophy last season, when he ranked seventh in the nation in goals (15) and
points (34).
The University of Denver men's soccer team was ranked 19th in the nation by Goal.com and 29th by
College Soccer News in their preseason polls.
"It's nice to be recognized nationally, as our program gains more and more respect," head coach
Bobby Muuss said. "However, this is a tribute to last year's team and its successes.
The players joining the University of Wisconsin men's soccer program this fall is among the
country's best incoming classes, according to College Soccer News.
The website ranked coach John Trask's second recruiting class at UW 18th in the
nation and second among Big Ten Conference teams, behind only Indiana.
Strikers defender and 2009 player of the year Zach Kirby has announced he will retire from soccer
today after multiple injuries which have kept him out of many games in his career. Known to the
fans as "Beowulf", Zach was one of the best players on the team and considered by many too good to
be playing 2nd division soccer.
The University of Denver men's soccer team added two players to its roster for the 2011 season,
coach Bobby Muuss announced Friday.
UC Santa Barbara transfer Joe Eubanks (Denver, Colo.) and four-time Nevada state champion
Christian Volesky (Henderson, Nev.) join a DU freshman class that includes two of the College
Soccer News Top 150 recruits, a Jamaican U-17 National Team member and state players of the year
from Kentucky, Colorado and Wyoming.
Mike Freitag, one of the most well-respected coaches in American soccer, has joined the
University of Denver men's soccer staff, head coach Bobby Muuss announced today.
"Coach Freitag and the experiences he has had as a coach instantly make the University of Denver
men's soccer program better," Muuss said.
College Soccer News recently confirmed what most college soccer in Milwaukee have known for
years: The rivalry between the Marquette and UW-Milwaukee men's teams is one of the best in the
country.
The programs' annual Milwaukee Cup series was listed as No. 10 on CSN's list of "The Fourteen
Greatest Rivalries in College Soccer From Coast to Coast.
The 2011 University of Denver men's soccer team will host eight teams, including Creighton and
New Mexico, and the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Tournament at CIBER Field at the University
of Denver Soccer Stadium, head coach Bobby Muuss announced on Monday.
The Pioneers, who won the MPSF Tournament title last season, will play eight games against teams
that advanced to the 2010 NCAA Tournament.
Marquette's Stan Anderson once again was named to College Soccer News' annual
listing of the country's top assistant men's soccer coaches.
Anderson, a former standout goalkeeper at UW-Parkside, is in his fifth season with the Golden
Eagles working with head coach Louis Bennett – the two previously were at
UW-Milwaukee for 10 seasons.

Colombia's America de Cali.
"I'm very excited to join America de Cali, one of the most historic clubs both in Colombia and in
South American soccer," Restrepo said.
Williamsburg, Va. - After a stellar four-year career at William and Mary, Tribe
senior Alan Koger was taken in the third round (54th pick) of the 2011 Major League Soccer
SuperDraft by the New England Revolution. With his selection, Koger becomes the ninth player in
program history to be drafted in to the MLS.
The Draft isn't even an hour old and it's already a tremendous success for our beloved boys in
naranja.
The Houston Dynamo selected fullback Kofi Sarkodie (5' 9", 155lbs) with the 7th pick in the 2011
MLS SuperDraft. Sarkodie was part of the Akron Zips National Championship team this year and was
easily the best fullback available in the draft.
University of Wisconsin forward Chris Prince collected another postseason
honor, as he was named to the third team of the College Soccer News All-Freshman team.
Prince led the Badgers with seven goals and 14 points in 20 matches (18 starts) – he tied for
10th among NCAA Division I freshmen in goals – and previously earned honorable mention on the
Goal.
