Not much of a surprise there. It was just announced on ESPNews.
Perhaps the biggest surprise is this is the first time that Landon Donovan, a five-time Honda
Player of the Year and two-time U.S. Soccer Athlete of the Year, has won the MLS award.
Said Donovan:
"Well, from a statistical standpoint it wasn't my best year, but what is important to
me, and I think the reason we're being recognized, is that our team was very good this
year.

You may have recently read that Bruce Arena received the award for Coach of the Year for rescuing
the LA Galaxy from the depths of the last few seasons all the way to the Western Conference final.
The most high-profile part of his salvage job was the healing of the San Andreas Fault-sized rift
between Lando & Becks.

In case you didn't know, or hadn't read, the L.A. Galaxy have been a bit of a mess in the last
couple years.
No longer.
Ex-USMNT coach Bruce Arena took over the job in August last year and given one full season he's
turned them from a laughing stock to a title contender. For that reason, he's MLS coach of the
year.

Los Angeles Galaxy's Bruce Arena was named the 2008 Major League Soccer coach of the year
Wednesday, after guiding the club to its first playoff berth since 2005.
That line does not do justice to the job that Arena did for the Galaxy this year. Last season
the Galaxy finished bottom of the Western Conference after conceding a league-high 62 goals.

And boy does he deserve it! The man is a miracle worker.
Good on ya, Bruce. Keep Klein in the line up for Friday and let's kick some Houston ass!

While newly-minted MLS coach of the year Bruce Arena has assembled an LA Galaxy team largely from
scratch (outside of its two superstars of course) the squad they host in the Western Conference
final tomorrow night counts on a core of players that has played together for years. "You kind of
know when you need to step it up and raise your game," said
Brian Ching said.

No a real shocker for most folks out there, Major League Soccer has announced the 2009 Coach of
the Year is LA Galaxy front man Bruce Arena.
The turnaround in LA this year has been nothing short of remarkable. Arena found a way to get
everything on board with stars like Landon Donovan and David Beckham by plugging in solid veterans
and excellent young stars like Omar Gonzalez and Sean Franklin.

In a little over a year, Bruce Arena transformed one of the worst teams in the league into a

Chivas USA was a surprise early on in 2009, but they faded quickly in the summer months. (Getty

It seems like every season or so we get one club that comes out hot to start the season then to
only fade in the summer. In 2009 it was Chivas USA who was just that club as they went 7-2-3 to
start the first couple months of the season.

With J Hutcherson -- That crack media contingent that put Columbus Crew coach Robert Warzycha in
the final three for MLS Coach of the Year? Well, the biggest playoff breakdown in recent memory
wasn't an overwhelming display on the part of Real Salt Lake. It was Columbus playing for the draw
in the first game and not getting it.

The regular season is done, over, finished or whatever other adjective you want to use. For the
second straight season WVH got to participate in the league's media vote for the season awards.
Voting is now over and I felt it was time to share my votes with you all.
I'll have to admit some awards were tougher to vote on than others but I tried to span the
entire season's body of work as much as I could for these awards.

For most folks out there the Coach of the Year debate is a three person race. Depending on the
how the final week goes we could include one or two others into the discussion.
Some coaches have lead their clubs from loads of draws early to the top of their conferences,
one has lead an expansion club to the playoffs for the second time in league history, while others
have just done what they always do.

It might be one of the easier categories to vote for, but the 2009 MLS coach of the year race
has more than just one worthy candidate.
Los Angeles Galaxy head coach Bruce Arena is the clear front-runner for the award, as he should
be, but some other coaches have also enjoyed quality seasons.

It has recently come to my attention that a few people are having trouble viewing ESPN videos here.
A quick show of hands in the comments would be appreciated in the comments if you can't see Allen
Hopkins stumping on the Coach of the Year, Omar "Jamrock" Cummings and the oh-so-tight fight for
the post-season.

September 27, 1993 - Ken Fogarty is voted the APSL Coach of the Year after taking the Tampa Bay
Rowdies from a 4-11 start to a final 12-12 regular season record. He had to battle injuries on his

With today being the league's All-Star game it just felt right to go into some award talk. Most
of the awards feel like they are going to be decided very late in the year this season. A lot of
names in the running for things like the MVP race and the rookie of the year race. Only the
comeback award feels like it is all but given out to Chivas keeper Zach Thornton.
