finishing 24-0-1 against a schedule that included top teams from California, Washington, D.C.,
Missouri, Indiana and Illinois in addition to Wisconsin competition.
The Hilltoppers didn't win a mythical national title – they ended up third in the ESPNHS
Powerade Fab 50 and fourth in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America poll – but their
performance led a major honor for their coach.

The final three men shortlist for FIFA Balon D'OR 2011 has been announced. The final list is no
surprise to anyone following serious footballing action - Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi and Xavi

Reigning Spanish and European champions Barcelona have offered coach Pep Guardiola a new
contract. Speaking to news agents, Barca president Sandro Rosell confirmed that the club had
offered Guardiola a new contract which he could sign when he was ready.
However, a very interesting twist to this news is the fact that Guardiola still remains non
committal on his long term affiliation with the club.
Today, MLS announced the Coach of the Year. Unfortunately, Sporting KC coach, Peter Vermes did not
win the coach of the year. The award this year went to the coach of the Supporters' Shield winning,
LA Galaxy, Bruce Arena. Vermes finished 3rd in the voting behind Arena and Sigi Schmid. A strong
season for Vermes taking KC from their 1-6-3 start to the Eastern Conference regular season
championship and the conference finals, a job not many coaches in the league could have done.

We've got two awards on the docket today: comeback player of the year and coach of the year. And
finally we have our first controversy. We'll start with the easier COY, beginning with my selection

Schellas HyndmanNotes: Philly's eye-popping turnaround is the story of the league through July.
Leave it to MLS to miss a slam dunk. As part of their daily unveiling of award winners leading up
to the MLS Cup (an idea that I like that they do), the league announced the winners of the Comeback

Ives Galarcep writes of why Peter Vermes stands out among an elite list of top coaches in Major
League Soccer this season.
While it certainly can't be argued that standout coaches Bruce Arena, Sigi Schmid and Jason
Kreis didn't once again show why they are some of the best coaches in MLS, and among the best in
league history, but in terms of helping a team reach new heights and helping multiple players enjoy
breakout seasons, it's tough to argue with Vermes as the MLS Coach of the Year.
Today MLS named their finalists for all of their awards and two members of the Sporting KC team
have been nominated for year end awards. The least surprising of the two, CJ Sapong has been named
a finalist for the Rookie of the Year award. Sapong has to be considered the front runner and
probably odds on favorite to win the award.

There's been discussion on some of the Sounders FC boards lately about whether or not Sigi
Schmid should be fired. One of the common defenses that comes up is that he's won 2 MLS Cups so
therefore he is a good manager. The question is, in a league based on parity with a playoff system
that almost everyone qualifies for, how hard is it to win an MLS Cup?

Heard the one about the A-League club struggling for crowds and funds?
Yep at seasons end Gold Coast United bring in Shane Smeltz, Korean import Sung-Kil Kim and
Bundesliga player Peter Perchtold. That's expensive, less expensive and probably expensive.
But on 2500 fans and trying to engage the community Chris Harald, Youth Team Captain Stephen
Lustica and others miss out.

just triumphed in the World Cup with Spain, but Messi was part of an amazing season for Barcelona,
scoring 43 goals in 57 matches.
