So Newcastle's new signing Papiss Demba Cisse and fellow Senegalese team mate Demba Ba netted
goals for the Magpies in their 2-1 home win over Aston Villa yesterday. However, whats funny is
that the same two players could not do the same for Senegal in the Africa Cup of Nations.
And this is interesting because African players have a tendency to perform well for their clubs,
but when it comes to their national sides, it is a different story.
Yes, I admit that I enjoyed American Football today, Super Bowl Sunday, but in the rest of the
world, Association Football was played as usual. Especially in Gabon and Equatorial Guinea,
co-hosts of the 2012 African Nations Cup.Yesterday, powerful co-favorites Ivory Coast defeated
co-host Equatorial Guinea 3-0.
Two goals from Didier Drogba and a fine free kick from Yaya Toure gave Ivory Coast a comfortable
3-0 win over Co-host Equatorial Guinea to send the Elephants through to the Semi final where they
will face either Gabon or Mali.
In the day's earlier match Zambia beat 10 man Sudan with a scoreline to make it through to the
semis for the first time since 1996.

Hands up. We've been a bit lapse with our coverage of the African Nations so far. That's going
to change as soon as the group stages are over but, for now, you'll have to make do with dribs and
drabs including this startling piece of cheatery spotted during co-host nation Equatorial Guinea's
dramatic late win to send much-fancied Senegal tumbling out of the tournament yesterday.

Tomasz Kuszczak's recent declaration that he is being treated "like a slave" at Manchester
United is certainly a dramatic overstatement but the goalkeeper's situation also warrants
sympathy.
Many have countered that if being a slave is training everyday and picking up a hefty paycheck,
more than a lot of people make in a year, then they would happily accept the hypothetical shackles
the Pole is chained to with Sir Alex Ferguson's side.
Poland will co-host EURO 2012 along with Ukraine next summer. As the Biało-czerwoni (white and

Just in time for the white-knuckle ride that is the final week of the MLS season, guest co-host Dan

American Soccer Network's RBNY-themed podcast. This week, we look back at the disastrous loss in
Kansas City that saw Thierry Henry get sent off, preview Thursday's showdown with Philadelphia
Union and discuss the club's announcement that Hans Backe will be back on the touchline next
season.

The Gold Cup knockout rounds are upon us.
Mathcups are:
1. Honduras-Costa Rica
2. Mexico-Guatemala
3. El Salvador-Panama
4. USA-Jamaica
In the semis, we'll get the winners of 1-2 and 3-4, which could mean a Mexico-USA final.
What a shock.

It has been announced that the groundbreaking podcast, World Football Daily, will be going through
a massive change. Co-host, show founder and quite frankly one of the biggest influences on the game
in North America - Steven Cohen - will be stepping away from the mic in two weeks time.
The show was started nearly a decade ago by Cohen and Nick Geber.

It's early February and there's still no schedule, and while February came last year without our
list of matches, this year, first kick is much closer. Without a schedule (because we are down one

Lucky for Chris, a DC United supporter, the week's biggest news surrounds his club.
The Ballad of Matthias Sindelar (Or How World War II Robbed Austria's Golden Generation) is a
post from: Just Football
The name Matthias Sindelar should be familiar to football aficionados everywhere as well as
historians, for that matter. But, by and large, it isn't. Chris Woolfrey elaborates on an iconic
symbol of Austrian football:
In his book Inverting the Pyramid Jonathan Wilson writes that "the modern way of
understanding and discussing the game was invented in the coffee houses of Vienna," and in the
realisation of an aesthetic of Austrian football formed by Hugo Meisl's Wunderteam and
their iconic forward Matthias Sindelar, a nation patronisingly deemed by some as
too lowly for its role as co-host of the 2008 European Championship contributed perhaps more to the
development of football than most so-called 'major' sporting nations ever have.
