The second round of the Torneo Clausura is upon us already, played in midweek so as to get ahead on
things with the Copa Libertadores coming up and the need to finish the championship in time for the
break prior to the World Cup. Estudiantes take on Gimnasia in the clásico platense on Wednesday,
Racing [.
Round 10 only ended on Thursday afternoon, but already the eleventh round of the Torneo Clausura
arrives this evening. Godoy Cruz will be hoping to crank up the pressure on leaders Independiente
when they visit Estudiantes de La Plata in the weekend's first match, which might be their toughest
assignment yet Estudiantes themselves would [.
I'm a little distracted with various things at present, not least the preparations for my move next
week to Buenos Aires. As such there's no Argentines Abroad this week, other than a congratulations
to Lionel Messi for that astonishing four-goal haul in tonight's European Cup match between
Barcelona and Arsenal, which makes him Barça's all-time [.
The fifteenth round of the 2010 Torneo Clausura features not one but two clásicos, both played on
Sunday. By the time they swing round, any of Godoy Cruz, Independiente or Estudiantes will have had
the chance to claim the leadership in the chase for the league title I'll be at River vs Godoy on
[.
After the madness and midweek distraction of the World Cup preliminary squad list, it's back to
business for one last push in the domestic league: the final round of a nailbiting 2010 Torneo
Clausura is upon us, and either Estudiantes ... Continue reading →
The full fixture list has been released for the 2011 Torneo Clausura de Primera División. The
campaign will start on the weekend of the 13th February and end on the weekend of the 19th June, in
time for the Copa ... Continue reading →
The first round of matches in the 2010 Torneo Clausura is upon us tonight, at last. A full preview
of the tournament will follow over or shortly after the weekend I've been tied up during the week
writing about Salvador Cabañas's shooting in Mexico (HEGS naturally wishes him well). The closest
thing to a [.
The third round of the 2010 Torneo Clausura begins a day later than usual this weekend, due to the
midweek matches for the second round. It will run from Saturday afternoon until Monday night, and
at the end of it a league table will hopefully be up on HEGS for the first time in far [...]
It's all go in Argentina, with not so much as a day's break from football since last Friday, and
now the domestic league recommences after the midweek Copa Libertadores action. This weekend,
Banfield host Lanús in the clásico del Sur, Racing visit Gimnasia in a critical relegation clash,
and San Lorenzo vs Vélez is the [.
This weekend sees Racing take on San Lorenzo in the year's first competitive clásico between
members of the cinco grandes. Also coming up in the next few days, champions Banfield host Rosario
Central, Gimnasia visit Tigre and on Monday night an Estudiantes side smarting from last night's
thrashing in the Copa Libertadores will be looking [.
The biggest match of the weekend takes place on Saturday, when Racing travel the couple of hundred
yards to the new Estadio Libertadores de América to take on Independiente in the clásico de
Avellaneda. Boca Juniors, bizarrely, are in action on Friday night, against Estudiantes. Joint
leaders Vélez and Colón are away to Huracán and [.
The late night caused by typing up Tuesday's Argentines Abroad post got the better of me, and I
totally forgot to put up details of the seventh round of the Torneo Clausura, which is being played
in midweek. Tuesday's matches were generally high-scoring, with Racing's agonising 1-1 draw against
Huracán (who, as I type, have [.
The 2010 Torneo Clausura gathers apace. Round 7 finished on Thursday, and round 8 begins today with
a clásico as Racing visit Boca in La Bombonera. Nearly halfway through the championship, the
mendocinos of Godoy Cruz still lead the table (!), and they visit Newell's Old Boys, who with a win
and the right results [.
This weekend begins with leaders Vélez hosting struggling Lanús, and ends on Sunday evening when
Argentinos Juniors visit El Cilindro take on Racing. Boca play Tigre hard to believe that under 18
months ago this was a title-decider and Estudiantes, fresh back from their latest Copa Libertadores
exploits in Bolivia, are at home [.
At the start of every torneo corto, I know I'm going to get at least two or three emails from
prospective holiday-makers in Buenos Aires asking 'when's the superclásico happening?' and so it
is that this weekend, the most eagerly-awaited fixture in the Argentine domestic calendar will
dominate the proceedings.
One or two of the comments on my most recent Soccernet article suggest that Argentina's barra
bravas are no more than choreographed fans who are more passionate about the game than typical
English fans who turn up to the game and eat prawn sandwiches without looking at the pitch (that's
a typical English fan, apparently).
The first competitive superclásico of 2010 is only five hours away, and even with both Boca
Juniors and River Plate enduring turgid campaigns after years of underachievement, it's still the
most talked-about fixture in Argentine football. Martín Palermo could become Boca's all-time
highest goalscorer outright today, although whilst the Argentine press have now all decided [.
Thursday afternoon will see the remaining 81 minutes of Sunday's superclásico played out between
Boca Juniors and River Plate in La Bombonera. Although the match is already underway, the sides'
starting XIs don't have to be identical to those fielded on Sunday, but as it happens they almost
are. A short but sweet note then, [.
It might be Easter weekend, and Sunday might be my birthday as well as the big day itself, but the
AFA don't even stop for me (or Jesus). The leaders Independiente host Arsenal in a sort-of
clásico, second-placed Godoy Cruz will be hoping to get back to winning ways at home to Vélez
Sársfield, and [.
San Lorenzo suffered the loss of their manager Diego Simeone on Saturday afternoon following
another loss at home, this time to Gimnasia La Plata. Their directors wasted no time naming
Simeone's replacement though, confirmed Sebastián Méndez as first-team manager for the remainder
of the season. The Colombian was a member of the San Lorenzo side [.
Coverage of the fourteenth round of the Torneo Clausura here on HEGS has already been, and will
again be, a little delayed due to various farewells I'm making here in England prior to my flight
to Buenos Aires on Wednesday. So bear with me, and forgive me for not having got these fixtures
online before [.
With just a few matches to go of the 2010 Torneo Clausura, the race down at the bottom of the
Promedio is hotting up now. Racing's victory on Wednesday night over Atlético Tucumán has
affected the race in a huge way, but with the relegation table worked out over three seasons it's
not always immediately [.
The sixteenth round of the Torneo Clausura begins today with the title race as close as ever going
into the home stretch. On Friday evening, Vélez Sarsfield will be aiming to cut short a run which
now stretches to four games without victory (no wonder Ricardo Gareca's upset) when they host
Tigre, and Godoy Cruz [.
With Saturday cleared from fixtures due to May Day, the 17th round of the Torneo Clausura is
already underway, with Newell's Old Boys having claimed a 2-0 win away to Arsenal. For the hosts,
Jorge Burruchaga just might have quit as manager, but we'll have to wait and see. Agustín Alayes
and Rolando Schiavi scored [.
The Torneo Clausura title just might be decided this weekend, with title contenders Estudiantes de
La Plata playing at the same time as Argentinos Juniors on Sunday. If Estudiantes win, Argentinos
have to match their score to go into the ... Continue reading →
