Oguchi Onyewu went into this summer a free agent and hoped to put together a strong
Confederations Cup performance to draw some potential suitors for his services. It appears he has
found a taker, though not one from the leagues we might have expected him to go to.
According to Sky Sports, Onyewu has signed a three-year deal with Turkish club Fenerbahce,
choosing to pass on the possibility of signing with Birmingham City after talks stalled with the
English club.

Didn't loyalty used to go a long way? I know, not with players who immediately leave clubs when
they smell two Euros more at another one. Okay, there a few exceptions of course, Lukas Podolski
for instance who returns to his love FC Cologne or Robert Enke who does not want to transferred
away from Hannover but should and therefore has to.

Big and surprising news this morning as Cologne FC Coach Christoph Daum unexpectedly canceled
his contract to return to his second home Istanbul to coach the local club Fenerbahce. I can't help
it but this got an awkward smack of breach of trust. After a soap-opera kinda like office taking
three years ago with press conferences held in hospitals, a lot of seesaws with quotes like
‘there are no pros and cons when it comes to love' (great conclusion, though) and joyful elations
in Cologne, the lost son leaves the city once again to return to his other love, Turkey.

Früher schob man

halten was man will.
an.

diesem Interview mit der Fußballreporter-Legende Manni Breuckmann, a.k.a. Die Stimme des
Westens, recht zudringlich, was Herrn Breuckmann offenbar ein wenig nervt.

Part III: The Post-1998 World Cup Breakout
By now, most of the trailblazers had returned home to play in Major League Soccer (MLS); Caligiuri
to Los Angeles, Wynalda to San Jose, Harkes to DC United, and Lalas to New England. Nonetheless,
the number of American players in Europe exploded to unprecedented numbers with over 20 playing in
Germany alone – a combination of established professionals, young players, and journeymen.

The Deutsche Presse Agentur released a poll yesterday about predictions for the upcoming season.
Bayern Munich was the unanimous favorite of Bundesliga coaches to repeat as champions. The most
common reason given was the quality of Jürgen Klinsmann's squad. What follows is a hasty
translation of what each of the 18 gaffers [.

US defender Oguchi Onyewu is still drawing great interest from FC Cologne coach Christoph Daum but
the German club also reports that they are facing competition from an English club which they did
not identify. Later, Belgian soccer magazine Voetbal Belgie identified the club as (surprise,
surprise) Fulham.

Anyone watching the US team's 2-0 loss to England this week probably had the same sick feeling some
of us had during the 1998 World Cup - that the US team looks (and is) not even second rate.
Frankly the US was quite lucky not to fall 4-0 last week in London as the home team spent the last
20 minutes toying with our team the way a cat plays with a mouse it has caught (before eating it).
