The trap-door has been opened at Anfield, and above it perches a team on the brink. Consequently,
every game seems to be make or break for Liverpool this season. Every decision is overly
scrutinised, and despite us being without a league title since 1989, the media tells us that the
league must be won or the manager must go.

If you believe what you hear - and what you saw against Fulham - you'll probably believe the wolves
are at the door for Señor Benitez. However, I'll try to put things in perspective without using an
array of cringe-worthy Halloween puns.
What happened against Fulham was a disaster, and a game we shouldn't have lost going into.

As Anfield, the city of Liverpool, and every Liverpool fan jumped for joy during Sunday's humbling
of Man United, one man stood still...emotionless; impassive, and controlled. That man was, of
course, Rafa Benitez - the heartbeat and Commander in Chief of everything Liverpool FC.
If one was to spend the whole match against Manchester United watching Rafa, it would be hard to
judge the scoreline at the end.

Romanticism and nostalgia - both are integral to the Liverpool fan experience, and when one hears
the words "Liverpool Football Club", you almost expect the word ‘history' to pop up somewhere.
But what exactly does history mean in this day and age, and is it actually important to the club's
prospects of success?

Amid the ‘stories' of bids for David Villa and Franck Ribery, Liverpool spent a considerable
amount of money on the comparatively unknown Alberto Aquilani. Already, the former Roma player is
charged with saving Liverpool's supposedly ‘faltering' title hopes, but could the expectation
placed on his shoulders prove to be counter-productive?

There's a spanner in the works; someone is not playing ‘the game'. The man in question seems
quiet, reserved and astute, yet has a unique ability to get under peoples' skin. The man I'm
talking about is, of course, Rafael Benitez, manager of Liverpool FC.
What fascinates me is why this quiet man from Madrid seems to provoke such a strong reaction from
people.

With Rafa's 5th season at Anfield at a close, the summer ahead looks to be a crucial one in the
eyes of many of our fans. So many times I've seen ‘Rafa's Revolution' splattered across the pages
of the press, but this summer needs to be about evolution over revolution.
The departure of Sami Hyypia is more than just a farewell to a legend; he is the last signing of
the Houllier era to leave the club.

Much maligned midfielder Lucas Leiva is apparently on his way out of Anfield, and it seems that
most Liverpool fans would be happy with that...but not Chris Severs, who argues that losing the
Brazilian could be a blow for Liverpool.
By pulling statistics from the same source as a Daily Mail writer I can tell you that 95% of
Liverpool fans either do not support Lucas or at best will wish him well in leaving Liverpool this
summer.

So-called 'mind games' have been receiving lots of press coverage in recent weeks, and Sir Alex
Ferguson is the most famous for his ‘attacks', but just how effective are they?
Despite deficiencies in spending power and squad depth, we've seen Liverpool become the main
challengers to United's dominance this season.

The headline above is an accurate representation of the many texts I've received after Chelsea's
victory over Liverpool at Anfield.
Upon reflection of the most recent Liverpool Chelsea saga, and some sound advice from an old
regular at the bar, I concede that football is indeed ‘a funny old game'.
