According to Behind The Badge, D.C. United coach Tom Soehn "has removed his name from consideration
for the club's head coaching position". The short-shorts enthusiast joins TFC's Chris Cummins as
the first occupants of the 2009 off-season coaching carousel; perhaps if they sit close enough
together they can share some reading materials amongst one another.

DC United has announced today that they will not be offering Tom Soehn a contract extension. The
team was told this morning that Soehn was out and the search for a new manager would start.
"Tommy has done an outstanding job at D.C. United, first as an assistant and then as our head
coach," said United President and CEO Kevin Payne.

BMO Field finally turned into a fortress in 2009. (Getty Images)
2009 was expected to the be year that Toronto FC turned the corner and really made a splash in
Major League Soccer. The moves were made to get local star Dwayne De Rosario at the start of the
season and things looked promising early on but midway through the first full month of action
manager John Carver stepped down and if you ask me the club never really rebounded from that
change.

I'm not a smart man. I mean, for years and years, I thought all those VCRs were supposed to
blink "12:00." Who knew?
So maybe this is hardly a surprise, but I just don't get it when it comes to Toronto FC. My
little brain just can't get around how matters are being managed at a club with such amazing
potential.

That is some quality toad. Nice hole too.Well, that's it then. 2009 is done and dusted with Toronto FC having nothing but a big wad of
mediocrity to show for it. But have no fear brave TFC supporters - Mo Johnston is working
feverishly to make everything better!

The gears in many front offices haven't ground to a halt just yet. digest their future and
ponder what moves to make this offseason. Coaching is one obvious place to start, and for the teams
that failed to make the playoffs, now is the time to question who will be on the sidelines again in
2010.

So Mo Johnston's big state of the
no-union address was to remove the "interim" tag from
head coach Chris Cummins title. He also removed the word "head" and "coach" from the affable
Englishman's job description as well.
Yes, the ever-humble Johnston dispatched yet another manager from the TFC bench with Cummins being
the convenient excuse for the mediocrity which Mo has taken nearly four years to build.

Today, in a total non-surprise, Chris Cummins departed Toronto FC as head coach. Mo Johnston
declared that the next head coach will have MLS experience, but the head coach search must wait
until after the MLS Cup game.
Mo also confirmed that he signed a 2.

So Toronto FC fired their interim manager Chris Cummins today, on the heels of a 5-0 meltdown in a
must-win match against woeful New York. That's a reasonable move, and one that I suspect most TFC
fans welcome. But whichever English or Scottish league washout that Mo recruits (and you can bet
your bottom dollar that it'll be a Brit), will face the same problem that Cummins and his
predecessor John Carver faced.

Former Toronto FC coach, Chris Cummins
With the not too surprising news this morning that Chris Cummins is out as coach of Toronto FC,
let's look at the rest of the coaching candidates for dismissal in MLS. Starting from the team with
the worst record in the league, the New York Red Bulls, and working our way up the table, these men
should be feeling the pressure from team owners for failing to qualify for the postseason.

Toronto FC did not renew interim head coach Chris Cummins's contract on Tuesday, announcing they
will begin a search for a new head coach. Cummins replaced John Carver, who resigned on April 25th.
"We have decided to move forward without Chris for next season," said manager, director of soccer
Mo Johnston.

So, there, Cummins is gone. Duane Rollins thinks his leaving won't account for much, following his
convincing argument the other day for Trader Mo's dismissal as sporting director.
Fine Cummins out, so can we stop the ex-lower level Luton/Newcastle parade now? These are the last
of clubs in a long line of Graham Taylor-Watford-Wimbledon eighties style Charles Reep football,
and follows a "we need this part to fit in this cog" line of thinking to work properly—you have
to have two centerbacks and they both have to be big, you need a poacher near goal with a runner in
behind him, and you need a classic lined up midfield to grease that 4-4-2.

Not a real shocker here since Toronto FC got spanked on the final day of the season when they
needed a win to reach the post season. Toronto FC announced today that interim head coach Chris
Cummins will not be returning for the upcoming 2010 MLS season. Effective immediately, the search
begins for a new head coach.

It's rumoured that Chris Cummins may be leaving Toronto FC, although he denied it yesterday to the
CBC. Fine, we'll see. But while I was previously opposed to a managerial shift now, I'm starting to
change my mind.
Jason de Vos' column put down TFC's failure to qualify for the playoffs this season to too much
individualism in the dressing room, and an unprofessional attitude on the part of the club's lesser
lights.

Ok, in an effort to pump up the Seattle Sounders just enough for them to beat FC Dallas this
weekend which would effectively seal Toronto's place in the playoffs (provided Toronto wins too of
course), here is a quick clip for the Seattle Sounders fans. Laurie at the Sounders Offside, I'm
looking at you here:
Ok, it's not so much a sacrifice to the football deities, as it is clip of a football deity (in
Seattle), but hey, it's appearing on a Toronto FC page, so that's the best I can do.

Its a pretty full night here at WVHooligan as far as the links and thoughts go. I have a couple
stories that kind of make my head spin, a couple surrounding the US national team and a brief
discussion on a rule that could really help some young players out with the NCAA.
First up is a post I saw earlier today that I felt needed to be held off until today.

Today was a little lesson in redemption. I guess it is possible to bounce back. TFC looked a
tougher team today, Cummins seemed a smarter coach and I might not have been alone in feeling that
I was a more confident fan.
It was cold down by the lake this afternoon. Cold in temperature and cold creeping into the heart
as so many elements of this week's game seemed to mirror chilly aspects of last week's game.

If everything goes as expected in the next two weeks, Toronto FC players will be packing their bags
and heading home for 2009 while many of their rivals prepare for the playoffs. What happened this
season? There was such promise back in spring but it quickly slid into mediocrity - all that was
left was a look ahead to 2010.

Many Canadian soccer blogs are ruminating on the mathematical jiggery that must take place for
Toronto FC to inch their way to a playoff spot, but little has been written about what it would
actually mean for Toronto to make it into the post-season. Is stretching the season out a little
bit a victory in and of itself?

After the all too predictable failure of Toronto FC on Saturday afternoon, the supporter's, and
media's, axe was immediately and forcefully swung at interim manager Chris Cummins' head. It is
hard to argue that anger, what with the technical shortcomings of TFC in the San Jose match and in
many previous matches this season, but how much of the blame can lay solely at Cummins' feet?

Everyone's had their two cents on TFC's woes this season, but the 24thminute makes things nice and
stark for us: the last fifteen minutes of games are a death trap for this club. Chris Cummins
wildly complained that his players dropped back in the final minutes against San Jose on Saturday
against his wishes, presumably hoping to absorb as much attacking pressure from their opponents as
possible.

In Mo Johnston and Toronto FC's quest to build the cheapest team in the world, they invited three
unknown youngsters on trial from the African nation of Ivory Coast - or Cote D'Ivoir to its
friends. Ivory Coast is a football rich nation which can boast the superstars Didier Drogba,
Emmanuel Eboue and Didier Zokora amongst its talented "Les Elephants" national team.

the daily grind at my normal job, and to getting back to work on things with this site. I wanted to

mostly end of year items and seeing how we are towards the end of the season it is fitting to

Last night's game in Chicago was yet another episode in frustration for Toronto FC. TFC need
every point they can get to cling to their slim chance of making the playoffs, and unfortunately
they gave up two of them last night.
The frustrating part is that Chicago was definitely beatable, but Toronto still managed to
squander the lead twice in the game and may now be too far out of the playoff race to catch up.

That's about it then right? Enough now with the endless quest for the playoffs? Toronto had to
leave Illinois with three points tonight but could only grab one from a match that saw TFC start
with a frenetic energy and end with most players about to collapse. The
2-2 result was probably fair for both teams who both showed a lot more in
the way of mistakes rather than skill.

I don't have too much going into tonight's Evening Links and Thoughts. I mainly wanted to touch
base with the current coaching hot seat situation in Major League Soccer. I don't expect any
coaching changes to take place until at least after the regular season finishes here. Something
crazy would have to take place for any of these teams below to even think about making a switch
with so few games left.

Most parents will tell you that if you coddle a child for too long then they will end up spoiled.
Now it's unsure how long "childhood" lasts for your average MLS club but three years seems to be at
least "young adult". Why then, is Toronto FC being treated so gingerly by most observers - both on
the inside and the outside of the club?

Whether or not TFC make the playoffs, and it is still an uphill battle, one thing was evident in
today's
3-2 win over Colorado - the future is near. In the stadium, on the
broadcast and most importantly on the pitch - change is in the air. That change is going to be
necessary if this club is serious about moving forward and many of the pieces showed their
potential today.
