Kagisho Dikgacoi on life in England.
Life's all about opportunities isn't it?  Sometimes you get them, sometimes you don't. Â
Kagisho had a debut at a time when the team's usual defensive midfielder, Dickson Etuhu, was out
injured.  The Scott Parker incident meant Chris Baird has been given the nod, and hardly put a
foot wrong.

This should have been a comfortable game and in the end it was. 2-0 perhaps flattered Hull but
after last season this was all about three points. We have more tough games ahead, and this gives
us some breathing space.
Fulham lined up with Damian Duff and Chris Baird partnering Murphy and Dempsey in midfield, and
Diomansy Kamara partnering Zamora up front.

Mad game. Fulham looked like getting nothing, then three points, then ended up with one. Â
We saw several versions of Fulham along the way: the tight one; the one that allows goals from set
pieces; the one that opens up when it needs to; the one that causes people listening on the radio
to throw cushions across the room in frustration.

An emphatic case of job done.  Roy Hodgson's Fulham XI, featuring only John Paintsil of our
regular lineup, produced a fine containing effort and will be well pleased with this point.  You
want to start a group stage well and we've done just that. With some good home performances we
may yet progress.

A frustrating afternoon spent chasing shadows.  Chelsea controlled the game from start to
finish, and Fulham really didn't threaten Petr Cech's goal.
Part of this was because of the injury to Andy Johnson on Thursday. His absence was felt all
over the pitch:Â we missed his sharp running, constant harrying and intelligent runs.

It's a lovely morning here in South London, a fine day for the serious business ahead.
Fulham are without Johnson (A), but also perhaps Dickson Etuhu, whose groin may have been behind
his early withdrawal on Thursday.   This could see all kinds of things happen: Chris Baird,
Jonathan Greening, or something else.

Thanks for playing along nicely so far. I was quite worried that taking this approach would
lead to a load of nonsense in the comments, but I think we're getting some quite interesting
discussion about the types of players who might be available and why. Hurray.
While we worry that EastEnders are playing dangerous games with the loyalty of us Bradley
Branning fans, on with the show.

Winner: Gareth Barry
In the shadow of a hobble-footed Steven Gerrard, the Aston Villa stepped up to set-up to goals and
insure that England live to fight another day.
Loser: Portugal
With Christiano Ronaldo putting them up 2-1 in the 73rd minute, it looked as if the Portuguese were
going to move into second in the group and cruise to qualification, but a 87th minute equalizer
ruined their party.

Earlier today it looked as if it would be up to the Ireland Rugby Union Team at the World Cup
tomorrow to salvage the weekend for the Irish, but in the end they could have gotten off much
worse. First, Northern Ireland lost on the road at Latvia 1-0, thanks to an own goal by Chris
Baird. Then just as it seemed Ireland was going to get the three points on the road against
Slovakia, a goal by Marek ÄŒech in injury time equalized the sides at two apiece.

Stuart Elliott and Sean Webb have been called up to replace injured pair Damien Johnson and
Jonny Evans for Wednesday's match, while Chris Baird has been named captain in the absence of Aaron
Hughes. Under Lawrie, the honour would normally have gone to Maik Taylor.

Chris Baird has turned down the chance to join Sunderland to sign for Fulham for £3.025m.
Lawrie: "I am well aware of Chris's attributes as a player from my time with Northern Ireland
and his qualities and versatility will be a major asset for the club next season. Winning the
Southampton player of the season award last year is testament to his continued progress and
development, which I have seen first hand at international level.

Southampton, beating Sunderland to the signature of the Northern Ireland defender.
Passing this along more out of obligation than excitement.
