Through the Chicago Fire's first decade, the MLS team was led on the field by one of two men,
former Poland National Team Captain Piotr Nowak through the team's first five seasons and former
United States National Team Captain Chris Armas through its second five. Piotr was on hand last
Thursday night, along with fellow Ring of Fire members Frank Klopas, Bob Bradley and me, to welcome
Chris into the team's hall of fame.

Last night, the Chicago Fire made their latest induction into the club's Ring of Fire, which
acknowledges heroes of the team's history. Added last night was Chris Armas, joining Bob Bradley,
Piotr Nowak, Lubos Kubik, Frank Klopas and Pitch Invasion's own Peter Wilt in the Ring. Despite
the pouring rain all night, Fire supporters, including myself, stayed in the stands to recognise
Chris at an excellent half-time ceremony, midway through a critical game that eventually saw the
Fire reach the MLS playoffs after a 1-0 win over Chivas USA.

Not the most intense game, but the Fire got the "W" and that is what counts! Playoff
bound!
Wish I could have seen the halftime event where Chris Armas was named to the Fire's Hall of
Fame, the "Ring of Fire". Thankfully Peter Wilt, the Fire's former GM and member of the "Ring of
Fire", was posting some great pics on his Twitter feed!

The task is a simple one for the Chicago Fire, but the simplicity doesn't make it any less
difficult. The Fire need a win or tie tonight against Chivas USA in order to secure a playoff berth
as well as the No. 2 seed in the Eastern Conference. Chivas USA isn't about to make it easy though,
not when a win tonight at Toyota Park (8pm, ESPN2) will move the Goats one step closer to the

It was announced yesterday that former Fire midfielder Chris Armas -- who played with the club
from its inception in 1998 through 2007 -- will be inducted into the "Ring of Fire" Hall of Fame

disappointing few seasons for the Gelsenkirchen based club wants to play for the USA.

For today's story on the Chicago-Chivas USA game, I started out focusing on the players who have
played every minute of each game so far. For the Fire, that's four players, a couple of whom might
surprise you:
-
Jon Busch. Not surprising at all -- starting goalkeepers usually pile up the
minutes.

I didn't write the headline to my article about the Olympic roster.
Not that I object to it per se, but I do find it a bit of a paradox, because one of my main points
in the article was that the U.S. didn't send the strongest team they could have to the Olympics.
Obviously, World Cup qualifying was an issue that conflicted, as did the demands of club teams,
especially when it came to one Landon Donovan.

Tonight I saw history repeated. I saw a real warrior knocked down. In the final USWNT game before
departing for China and the Olympics, Abby Wambach broke her leg while trying to score her 100th
goal for the USWNT.
She managed to force a smile and showed amazing inner strength and fortitude while being treated on
the field.

The Colorado Rapids have signed Chase Hilgenbrinck. Hilgenbrinck is an American left back that
was last plying his trade in Chile. Is this a sign that Fernando Clavijo is looking to repeat the
short but successful Dedi experiment? For those that don't know, Dedi was an Israeli left back the
Rapids signed in 2005 and moved up to left midfield.

As a man who tries to tell the truth at least 80% of the time, I'm not going to lie to you: I
turned off the Houston Dynamo's romp over the Chicago Fire after Nate Jaqua scored. More than the
tinges of paranoia telling me that Jaqua scoring some augurs the Apocalypse, I turned off the game
because I knew the Fire had, at most, one goal in them against a defense as stout as Houston's.
