Just as Liga MX and Ascenso MX have concluded their regular seasons and are poised to begin the Liguillas (playoffs, for those not in the know), so too are the national Sub-20 and Sub-17 leagues in Mexico. ["Sub" is the ... Continue reading →
The five MLS clubs learned their CCL groups today as Toronto FC learns they have the toughest
group of them all.
Tuesday's draw conducted by CONCACAF Acting General Secretary Ted Howard at the New York
headquarters set the match-ups for the tournament, which changed its format by eliminating the
Preliminary Round and establishing an initial round of eight, three-team groups.

Bilingual fans of the USMNT often enjoy the dual delight of Spanish and English language TV broadcasts. We benefit from selection and competition. If an anglo announcer is disinterested or off his game, then we can switch to Univision and Andres Cantor's cry of "Gooooolllllll!!!!" If the latinos are a bit over the top, then we can flip over to some dry humor and light commentary.
It's been an extra eventful off season across the board, with several players departing for Europe, a handful of teams rebuilding after a rough 2012, and clubs like Real Salt Lake scrambling to assemble quality rosters for a lot less money. But has any team had a more interesting (or weirder) off season than Chivas USA?
Eric Avila hasn't played for FC Dallas in nearly two seasons, but that doesn't mean FCD head coach Schellas Hyndman doesn't still wish his former midfielder well. Hyndman always said the decision to trade Avila to Toronto FC during the 2011 decision was a tough call because of what high esteem he held the California native in.
There's two ways to look at a story that surfaced earlier this week involving former FC Dallas midfielder Eric Avila. On one hand, the report that Avila, a 25-year-old midfielder who was with FCD from 2008 through 2011 before being traded to Toronto FC, could be part of a player swap between Chivas USA and parent club Chivas de Guadalajara could be viewed as a good thing.
When global soccer fans think of Mexicans and goal-scorers, it's hard not to think of Manchester United's Chicharito. The pacey front man burst onto the European scene two years ago and has refused to look back since his move from Chivas de Guadalajara.
Back in Mexico, however, Chivas continues to develop young talent, and another young star just might be on his way to Europe next.
The World Football Challenge is returning for another slate of international club friendlies
across North America.
As of now, the only matches officially part of the WFC are Chelsea's clash with the Seattle
Sounders at CenturyLink Field on July 18 and Liverpool's meeting with Toronto FC at Rogers Centre
on July 21.
The CONCACAF Champions League got back under way last night with games for both Houston and Real Salt Lake. Seattle and Toronto are back in action tonight against Santos Laguna and Marathon, and LA will face Isidro Metapan tomorrow. Check out the games and root for our fellow MLS teams (or not), and enjoy today's news.
Five months ago to the day, Toronto FC and Santos Laguna kicked off the semifinals of the
2011-12 CONCACAF Champions League at BMO Field, with the Reds holding the Mexican power to a 1-1
draw before ultimately succumbing a week later in a 6-2 rout at Estadio Corona.
Real Salt Lake has waited 15 long months to get back to the CONCACAF Champions League, but that
night has finally arrived.
With the loss to Monterrey in the 2010-11 CCL final still stinging, RSL kicks off a new regional
campaign Tuesday night with the opening of the new-look tournament against Herediano in Costa Rica
Los Angeles Galaxy, Seattle Sounders, Real Salt Lake, Houston Dynamo and Toronto FC fans: Take
out your calendars.
The schedule for the group stage of the CONCACAF Champions League was released on Friday, with
the completion of the Caribbean qualifying tournament this week putting Puerto Rico Islanders in
the same group as the Galaxy again, Trinidadian side Caledonia AIA in the same group as the
Sounders and Trinidadian side W Connection in the same group as Chivas de Guadalajara and
Guatemalan side Xelaju.
If the Seattle Sounders are to advance to the knockout stage of a second straight CONCACAF
Champions League, they will have to win a group that includes Honduran power Marathon and an
undetermined team from the Caribbean, according to Tuesday's draw. The group's final team will be
the winner of the Caribbean championship, who will be one of the Puerto Rico Islanders, Antigua
Barracuda FC, W Connection and Caledonia AIA of Trinidad.
The draw for the new-look 2012-13 CONCACAF Champions League is out, and the MLS team that got
the furthest in 2011-12 will be reacquainted with its semifinal partner in the group stage.
Five MLS teams are spread across the eight three-team groups, and Toronto FC had the misfortune
of being drawn with Santos Laguna and Salvadoran side Aguila; Real Salt Lake is paired with Costa
Rican side Herediano and Panamanian side Tauro FC; and the Houston Dynamo will play Honduran club
Olimpia and Salvadoran club FAS, which is only in the tournament because Belize had its CCL berth
rescinded for not having adequate stadium's for the tournament's requirements.
By Zac Lee Rigg - LOS ANGELES, CA (Sep 5, 2012) US Soccer Players -- The situation at Chivas USA is
unclear at the moment. When Chivas de Guadalajara owner Jorge Vergara bought out co-owner Antonio
Cue on Wednesday, it took a day for the Los Angeles Times to report that Vergara had dismissed
general manager Jose Domene.
Another day, another CCL win for the Sounders. Seattle scored thrice in the 3-1 win over
Caledonia, providing the squad with a stranglehold on Group 4 of the Champions League. Around the
rest of the CCL, Toronto was in a relatable position, losing 3-1 to Santos Laguna. Los Angeles
hosted the Puerto Rico Islanders and took advantage of home pitch with a 4-0 pantsing.
Chivas USA owner Jorge Vergara has not wasted any time in making changes with his new-found
total control of the team.
A day after the Chivas USA and Chivas de Guadalajara owner purchased the other 50 percent of the
club from Antonio Cue to assume complete ownership of the club, Vergara fired general manager Jose
Domene, the Los Angeles Times reported on Thursday.
A new season in England unofficially kicks off today as defending Premier League champions
Manchester City face off against FA Cup winners Chelsea in the FA Community Shield.
After building a reptuation as big spenders in recent years, Manchester City have yet to sign a
new player in this year's transfer window and enter the Community Shield with essentially the same
roster that captured the Premier League title back in May.
In their Western Conference Semifinal match up, the Portland Timbers U23s head to
Ventura, California to face off with Southwest Conference champion Ventura County
Fusion in a match up of two of the last three PDL Champions, with the Fusion
winning in all in 2009 and the Timbers U23s capping off their undefeated 2010 season with
the league crown.
Brazil plays Honduras tonight in Miami in preparation for next summer's World Cup. Both countries have brought strong squads with them to South Florida.
Event organizers will be hoping that the match will break the record for the largest attended soccer game ever to be played in Florida. The previous record was70,080 for the Barcelona against Chivas de Guadalajara game that was played at Sun Life Stadium in Miami in 2011.
In a season that has gone dreadfully wrong, perhaps a break from MLS is just what D.C. United needed. It seems however that even the Soccer Gods won't cut United any slack as a late goal from Angel Zaldivar in stoppage time earned Chivas de Guadalajara a 1-1 draw tonight at soggy RFK Stadium in Washington, D.
Let's be up front about the fact that anything that comes out of a friendly needs to be taken with a grain of salt. That said, D.C. United may not have been the better team over the course of the game, but they weren't blatantly out-played, led for about 17 minutes, and a draw is not an entirely unfair outcome.
Just two weeks ago the scouting report on Chivas was that they were a miserly team that didn't
score much but didn't allow many goals either. So naturally their following game versus the Seattle
Sounders featured 8 goals, including Fredy Montero's first hat trick and some pretty unimpressive
defending from Seattle that meant a 10 goal game wouldn't have been unthinkable.
