No, the whole AFR Team didn't come together to take over the Big Apple. Now that would be
writing a few thousand words about. But my brother and I, alongside a couple of friends, did enjoy
a few festivities and quite a bit of footy.
By Cesar Diaz – NEW YORK, NY (May 26th, 2011) US Soccer Players -- In honor of Asian Pacific
American Heritage Month, US Soccer Players is dedicating this feature to New York City's Chinatown
adult soccer league, City Soccer. Founded in 2002 by the NYC Chinatown Athletic Council (CAC), City
Soccer is a year-round league that is open to anyone of race, creed, color, and gender.
The Chinatown Soccer Club is a group of artists, designers, photographers, writers,
skateboarders, and all around good people that meet year-round for friendly soccer matched in
Chinatown, New York City.
They started getting together back in 2002 when the World Cup in Japan and Korea inspired them
to get together a few mornings each week and have a kick around.
Remember Chinatown? It is a great movie about water rights, land development, and conspiracy,
starring a young Jack Nicholson and Faye Dunaway. There is an iconic, incest revealing scene in
which Nicholson is trying to determine Dunaway's relationship to this girl. He keeps slapping her
and with each slap she switches from "my sister" to "my daughter.

One team won, and the other lost. The details are fuzzy as there were so many more interesting
things going on during yesterday's Showdown in Chinatown that you need to know about.
Such as?
Oh, some girl taking Adrian Mutu's crotch to the face after he over-ran the mini pitch. Or Tony
Parker body-checking Ryan Babel into the stands.

By Cesar Diaz – NEW YORK, NY (Jun 24, 2011) US Soccer Players -- On Wednesday, June 22, 2011, the
Steve Nash Foundation hosted their fourth Annual "Showdown in Chinatown" 8 v 8 soccer match at the
Sarah D. Roosevelt Park located at Chrystie St. & Staton St in Manhattan. This year's Showdown in
Chinatown event featured an All-Star roster that raised funds for The Steve Nash Foundation and its
work with underserved children.
So last night there was an afterparty in NYC for Steve Nash's Showdown in Chinatown. To my pleasure
and surprise, 30 Rock's Judah Friedlander was there and talking soccer. Dude was all high on the
Freddy Adu pass and Tim Howard's general badassness but thought overall the Yanks played poorly.
I saw a lot of random and interesting things yesterday at Steve Nash's Showdown in Chinatown.
B-baller Nate Robinson dropping off crosses and attacking from the wing like his name was Thierry
Henry. A huddle of NBA wives. Youri Djorkaeff blasting one off the crossbar from 2o+ yds out like
it was 1998.
Steve Nash's annual Showdown in Chinatown is tomorrow at Sara D. Roosevelt Park in NYC and guess
what player is the first to have his name leaked out as a participant? Yeah, this guy. How do I
know? Because this other guy asked and that guy answered. I know some people have very strong
opinions of this guy but all I am going to say is that if you are heading out there tomorrow night
please bear in mind that this is a charity event.
One of my favorite events of the year is rolling back into town! The Showdown in
Chinatown brings the Worlds most recognized athelete's from all sports to the playgrounds
of downtown Manhattan for a memorable 8v8 showdown in the name of charity.
Local legend and former Red Bull Claudio Reyna teams up once again with
basketball star Steve Nash to bring the third installment of this epic event to
life.
"It is easy for me to say soccer because the grass is always greener, right? I love playing
hoops and I love playing soccer. Those are two games I love to play."
-- Steve Nash, when asked about whether he prefers playing basketball or his first ever sport,
soccer.
Showdown in Chinatown is an annual charity soccer match organized by basketball player Steve Nash
and soccer player Claudio Reyna to benefit their respective charity foundations. The first edition
was a nine-a-side match played on June 25, 2008 while the second edition was an eight-a-side match
played on June 24, 2009.

It's never as good as the first time. The rain, the grand stand bleachers, the wet turf, the
steady cam man on the field, the crane cam hovering over the crowd. What was an underground
experiment last year became the mainstream mainstay as Steve Nash and Claudio Reyna hosted their
2nd annual Showdown in Chinatown to benefit each of their namesake charities.
So yesterday wasn't the best but I figure today will be a vast improvement. If you are in NYC and
are feeling it, come celebrate soccer and my place in the unemployment line with me. I'll be posted
up at Nevada Smith's with some of the ESC/North Jersey Brigade boys for the US-Spain match, then
down to Sarah D.
It's not that often a bunch of basketball superstars take the same field as some of the world's
greatest footballers, but today - Wednesday, June 24th - the Steve Nash celebrity soccer game is
happening.
If you're anywhere near the New York area, head down to Roosevelt Park at 6:00pm in Chinatown
(Manhattan) and witness this excellent spectacle.
Blatter defends the obscene amount of money spent on Ronaldo's transfer saying... "We are in a very sensitive market nowadays, because there is an economic crisis. But in
football, if we are in a good market, it means that football is a good product, not just to buy or
sell but a product that gives people what they want, which is emotions.
Three years, 900+ posts and thousands of comments later, my time at TheOffside.com has come to
an end.
When I joined this community of bloggers on July 20th, 2007, I never could have
envisioned how far this little corner of the internet would come. With TheOffside providing a stage
for me to work off of, it was up to me to make it a show worth watching.
Hey all. Bear with me. I have been going through a day in hell called "moving." My fingers are
cut all over the place from installing air conditioners, door frames, fish tanks . . . you name it,
I cut my fingers on it. All this for a new home that is only 10 blocks from my current one.
Ugh.
D.C. United will be bringing their #DefendRFK video truck will be making multiple stops throughout
the Arlington area Wednesday from noon until 5:00 PM.
#DefendRFK video truck in Chinatown Tuesday.
Be on the lookout today and be sure to get your picture in the "wall" alongside pictures of United
players.
Gastown FC is kind of like the Canadian version of Chinatown FC: an amateur squad of urban,
arty-types with more style and merch than most professional clubs. And God bless them for it
because they provide some excellent options for those who what to rep the game without going to
obvious; there are some times, some places when a jersey just isn't the best look.
Once again the most fashionable pickup tournament God has ever allowed the sun to shine upon,
adidas' Fanatic tournament, is set to descend on Manhattan's West Side this weekend with all of the
advance warning of an F5 tornado.
I honestly love this event. Seriously. It's the city's best amateur soccer event and a staple of my
ever-lightening summer social calendar but the short notice routine is waaaaay tired.
After Arsenal's loss in the Carling Cup final, I decided to open the second canister in that
mysterious stack of dusty old D.W. Griffith films that were apparently never released in the 1910s
and '20s. I don't know what this means, but I'm not sure how much longer I'm going to feel safe
keeping these in the basement.
In the car Cora talked and didn't look at the road and Sam, in the passenger seat, kept quiet
and looked at it. There was trouble getting out of Chinatown because the elevated train was out
over Allen and some policemen were blocking the road and letting the prostitutes sit in their squad
cars. A big plume of smoke came down from the tracks and listed over the traffic, and a trio of
sailors were cracking each other up by putting their lips to it and sucking, as if from an opium
pipe.
Not even this weekend's record snowfall can stop NYC's Chinatown Soccer Club from training. Such is
the life of a rec-league superclub (they have their own adidas shoe, and signed Thierry Henry &
Iker Casillas a few years ago) recovering from the tragic injury to striker Mike Messeenie.
I'm laid up with the plague today so unfortunately I won't be playing in the snow today or doing
too much blogging.
