I suspect many post-game analyses this morning will focus on the fact that Lukas Podolski and
Santi Cazorla got off the mark in English football. The two new signings scored the goals that won
us the three points, and both played very, very well, it has to be said.
Arsene's defender chase by AH At the moment we have two defensive injures with both Laurent
Koscienly and Bacary Sagna sidelined through injury. Koscienly is expected to return for the
upcoming game against Stoke City on Sunday, whilst Sagna will be out of the first team for a number
of weeks, as he continues to [.
Arsene Wenger's chase for a top striker for the Arsenal team continues as the Gunners are now faced
with another closed door after Fulham's manager Martin Jol dismissed the possibility of star
striker Clint Dempsey to leave, despite him so far refusing to sign a new contract. The American
hitman has scored 23 goals this [.
It's been claimed that Spurs have been tracking Lyon goalkeeper Hugo Lloris throughout the
summer but with the sale of Luka Modric, the chase could be nearing its end. The French club are
the ones to suggest that a transfer could be imminent.
"The sale of Modric from Tottenham to Madrid is important, as is the amount of the transfer,"
said Lyon's Chairman Jean-Michel Aulas.
In the latest edition of the Philly Soccer Show podcast, KYW's Greg Orlandini and PSP's Eli
Pearlman-Storch are joined by Philadelphia Union goalkeeper Chase Harrison, who got his first-ever
start last weekend in Dallas, helping the team to a 1-1 draw.
Harrison talks about the match, in which he took a physical beating but hung in as the Union
walked away with a point.
00:58 - A ball is launched over the top of the Union defense and finds Andrew Jacobson at the
top of Philadelphia's 18. The Union defense had been overly aggressive in the attack only seconds
beforehand and was unable to handle a run by the former Philadelphia midfielder.
The Netherlands' hopes to win the UEFA Euro 2012 tournament next month took a slight hit as FC
Schalke 04's star striker Klass-Jan Huntelaar suffered a concussion tonight against the
Philadelphia Union.
Huntelaar collided with Union goalkeeper Chase Harrison, who was starting in place of the
resting Zac MacMath - who himself had suffered a concussion this past weekend, inside of the Union
18.
According to The Sun (which is always a terrible way to begin a story), Arsenal defender Andre
Santos "could face jail" after leading police on a chase that topped out at 130 mph on the day
before the start of the Premier League season. Santos did not play in Arsenal's 0-0 draw against
Sunderland on Saturday, though he was named to the bench.
Despite some good chances, Mario Balotelli failed to score in his brief appearance as a
second-half substitute during Man City's 3-2 comeback win against Southampton to start the Premier
League season. Balotelli is recovering from conjunctivitis, so a bit of rust on the pitch is
understandable, but he showed that his pranking is already in midseason form.
On Wednesday night, Aston Villa did something no other international team had done before: beat
the Philadelphia Union at PPL Park.
The Union, who had been 4-0 in international friendlies at their home stadium coming into the
contest, beating Schalke, Everton, Celtic and CD Guadalajara, but the streak ended as they lost 1-0
thanks to a first-half goal from striker Nathan Delfouneso.
Depending on the eventual destination of Hoffenheim star Gylfi Sigurdsson, Liverpool can enter
the chase for Wigan's Victor Moses, who has primarily been drawing interest from Chelsea.
Sigurdsson, who played under new Reds boss Brendan Rodgers during a loan spell at Swansea last
season, is being pursued aggressively by Tottenham Hotspur.
Reported Arsenal target Alan Dzagoev has alerted his potential
suitors by confessing that he might want to leave his current club CSKA Moscow
when his contract with them expires at the end of the year.
FC Basel defender Aleksandar Dragovic has claimed that a
number of big European clubs, including Arsenal FC, Inter Milan, Borussia Dortmund
and Olympique de Marseille want to sign him in the summer transfer window.
The return of center backs Aymar Sinaise (UW) and Chase Morgan (Poynette) not only
stabilized the backline for Madison United on Sunday, it allowed coach Raj Rajani to check
out one of his newer players in a new position.
And Malcolm Calbert (Stoughton) made quite an impression as a two-way midfielder in
United's 7-0 victory over city rival Mad City FC in a Wisconsin Major League match at Elver
Park.
The Rhode Island Reds suffered a hard-fought 1-0 loss to the Brooklyn Italians in their NPSL
debut on Saturday.
CRANSTON, R.I. Jakeem Johnson spoiled the Reds' NPSL debut when he scored the game's lone goal
to give the Brooklyn Italians a 1-0 win at Cranston Stadium on Saturday.
Johnson spent much of the match knocking on the door before his 74th minute strike.
The Brotherly Game spoke with Ryan Gates of Stumptown Footy about
Jorge Perlaza and Danny Mwanga. The following is the transcript of the chat.
The Brotherly Game: Today's trade of Danny Mwanga for Jorge Perlaza leaves a lot of
questions on both sides for how the deal benefits both sides and how the players will fit into
their new teams.

Although it doesn't count in the standings, the Philadelphia Union earned a quality win on
Wednesday night in front of a paltry crowd at PPL Park.
Rookie forward Chandler Hoffman scored in the 88th minute to give the Union a 2-1 win over U.S.
men's national team midfielder Jermaine Jones and German side Schalke 04.
The Union are now 4–0–0 in international friendlies at PPL Park after a very entertaining
2–1 win over Schalke 04. The official attendance was 7,464 which, as is usually the case with
attendance figures, seems generous. Whatever.
Despite racing out to a two goal lead, the Union reserves faded in the closing minutes,
surrendering the lead and settling for a 2-2 tie at Widener's Quick Stadium.
Antoine Hoppenot led the line for the Union, opening the scoring in the 11th minute, having been
set up by Josue Martinez.
00:20 - Chase Harrison and Klaas-Jan Huntelaar collide inside of the Philadelphia Union 18.
Huntelaar was accidentally hit in the face by Harrison, who was attempting to punch a cross out of
his area. The Dutch striker was diagnosed with a concussion and his face had already begun to swell
up.
With Julio Cesar part of Mark Hughes' real life game of football manager, it seems that
Tottenham's goalkeeping options are now down to just one target. If the papers are to be believed,
Lyon's Hugo Lloris has been priority number one throughout the summer but with time running out,
can Spurs afford to lose out on the signing?
starting this morning with non-footballing stuff and the news that Andre Santos was arrested and
bailed last Friday 'on suspicion of dangerous driving'. The BBC report is quite understated,
saying:
Shortly after 9.30am on Friday August 17, a 29-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of
dangerous driving and failing to stop for police on the A1, near to Junction 22 of the M25.
International friendlies tend to have a more relaxed atmosphere and near the end of 10-man
Germany's 3-1 loss to Argentina, we saw that they can have more relaxed security as well. In the
89th minute, a joyous pitch invader jogged out to the center circle without so much as a single
steward giving chase.
Davide Santon continues to be linked with a move back to Italy and the latest news is that Rome
club Lazio are now leading the chase for the 21 year-old, who had a difficult first season in
England, but surely Newcastle are not yet willing to give up on the youngster, who cost £5M from
Inter-Milan a [.
On this week's show, we discuss whether Houston is a filler team, Brek Shea's meltdown and trade
rumors, and how little we all care for the All-Star game. We also hear more from our great
correspodents as the chase for the playoffs heats up! Correspondents include: Salt Lake, Los
Angeles, Chivas, Vancouver, DC, Dallas, Columbus, and Toronto.
It seems like the M.O. for Sporting KC this year has been to employ the high pressure on their
opponents, create giveaways and create a number of chances in the game, while limiting the chances
that their opponents get. Last night though, Sporting KC reversed that role a little bit. KC still
employed some high pressure, but an early goal for Jacob Peterson allowed Sporting KC to sit back a
little bit and basically told the Crew "OK come and beat us.

1.25pm Michael O'Hare's runners tonight
Chris Cook: As Will has noted (below), Michael O'Hare has a runner in each race
at Wetherby tonight, all owned by Mrs Tracey O'Hare and all to be ridden by Robbie Colgan, and it
will be very interesting to see if there is much market support for them.
Many club volunteers and board members have asked me directly in one way or another how they get
in front of a politician to plead their case for more fields, better infrastructure and more money.
The simple answer is you don't, but that's because you haven't developed a strategy to get on their
radar yet.
Liverpool have been the biggest culprits when it comes to spending over the value for English
talent this season. With the new homegrown rules firmly in place it seems the chase for England's
hottest up-and-coming prospects is set to continue, or will it encourage more teams to gamble with
their own youth setup?
At Tuesday's press conference, Schalke manager Huub Stevens said, "We're here with a strong
team, the strongest team we can have right now, guys like Raul, Klaas-Jan Huntelaar and Jermaine
Jones. If they feel good enough they'll play.
