Two goals from Wayne Rooney helped England to an impressive hammering of Bulgaria in Sofia and
moved the three lions one step closer to next summer's Euro 2012.
England got off to a good start when Gary Cahill, who played really well, scored his first goal
for his country. Cahill chested down Barry's terrific chip over a static home defence before
nudging the ball past the on-rushing keeper.
Those are not my words but the words of new goalkeeper Rob Elliot, signed from Charlton Athletic
last Tuesday. Rob Elliot delighted to be at Newcastle We're not sure why we need a third
goalkeeper at Newcastle, since we didn't have three last season, with Fraser Forster out on loan at
Celtic, like he is [.

Welcome to September. It's the month in which we say goodbye to summer and football fans
everywhere say hello to the squad of players they now know they'll be stuck with until January.
The transfer window has shut but the recriminations continue. And Arsenal fans etch the date of 7
April into their diaries – the day on which Samir Nasri will return to the stadium that he found
just a smidgeon too quiet for his tastes.

Did you see that remarkable stat this week that, before the game against Wales, Scott Parker had
won seven caps for England under three different managers over the course of 8 years whilst playing
for five different clubs?
Nothing like consistency of selection, eh?
Since his debut against Denmark in 2003, the following players have been capped in (broadly)
midfield:
Alan Thompson (1 cap)
Shaun Wright-Phillips (36 caps)
Stewart Downing (29 caps)
Kieran Richardson (8 caps)
Theo Walcott (18 caps)
Aaron Lennon (19 caps)
Joey Barton (1 cap)
David Bentley (7 caps)
Ashley Young (17 caps)
Gabby Agbonglahor (3 caps)
James Milner (19 caps)
Tom Huddlestone (3 caps)
Adam Johnson (8 caps)
Jack Wilshere (5 caps)
Now, of those, the most capped are basically wingers: Wright-Phillips, Downing, Walcott, Lennon,
Young, Milner.

In last week's profile of Joe Bennett, I ruminated on the nature of the attacking full back and
although we have no intention of focusing the Monday Profile on archetypes alone, this third study
of September again concentrates on a boilerplate figure. For Andy (like Mr. Cole, seemingly now
known as Andrew) Hughes is surely the epitome, the quintessence, the very embodiment of that well

Arsenal striker Robin Van Persie bagged his 99th and 100th goal for Arsenal during his sides' 3-0
win over Bolton on Saturday and In The Stands looks back to the Dutchman's best strikes whilst in
North London. It is fair to say that when it comes to scoring goals, Robin Van Persie does not do

Bolton Wanderers are set to make a loan move for Liverpool midfielder Jonjo Shelvey once the
transfer window opens in January.
The 19-year-old has struggled to get a place in Kenny Dalglish's squad so far this season and has
only made 22 appearances for the Reds since joining them from Charlton in 2010.
Liverpool are prepared to let midfielder Jonjo Shelvey leave the club on a short term loan deal as
they attempt to give the youngster a chance to play first team football.
Shelvey was signed from Charlton in the summer of 2010 and despite arriving with a big reputation
has so far struggled to force his way into the starting eleven.
Howdy Arse lovers. I write a few hours in advance of the fixture with Olympiacos. Far from ideal
as it's likely you'll read this in wake of that game. But it was so nearly worse dear reader. I did
originally flounce off in a massive huff and refuse to produce the column altogether. This was
until my lawyer forced me to release a statement explaining that it had all been a
misunderstanding.
