The list of nominees was long for the second in our eponymous yearly awards. Joe Mason, a regular
starter and scorer for Cardiff; Kevin Nolan, hardly cheap, but still value for money; Rhoys
Wiggins, who's developed into by far and away the best left-back in League 1 over the course of the
season after Charlton had snaffled him for a modest fee; and Crawley's quick and dirty turnover of
Tyrone Barnett were all heralded as good pieces of business up and down the leagues.

Our recent Geographies of Football series piqued interest to such a degree that we received a
message from David Field wondering if we would be interested in an application of the methodology
we applied to Cornwall and Worcestershire to England's southeasternmost shire. Here are the thought
provoking results and we hope to revive the series on an occasional basis.
Signing his professional contract in December 2006, the world was at the young Welshman's feet.
Having lightning fast pace, great stamina and positional awareness put Ribeiro's name on the radar
for the bigger clubs such as Everton. Ribeiro opted to stay at Ashton Gate stating: ''I felt I had
a better chance of playing regular football for Bristol City at the time'' Only making 14
appearances due to an injury-hit 5 seasons at Ashton Gate saw his contract finally terminated by
City this summer.
League One side Hartlepool United traveled to London to play their final match of the season and
about 170 of the club's fans made the trip dressed as Smurfs. First-place Charlton won the match
3-2, but that didn't stop the Hartlepool supporters from enjoying what's become a tradition of
dressing up for their final match each season, as well as any other big matches they feel like
watching in a costume.
By Chris Wright
Hartlepool are at Charlton for their final League One fixture of the season this afternoon, and
nearly 200 of their travelling fans have decided to descend on East London in full Smurf regalia
which has certainly made for interesting scenes on the underground.
From what Alan Pardew has said today, it seems that he is a big admirer of the Chelsea Football
Club. Roman Abramovich Chelsea owner Alan has spent much of his management career in London,
managing teams like Reading, West Ham and Charlton, and it seems it was convenient for him to visit
Chelsea to [.
Our latest guest post sees us very pleased to welcome Paul Harper, co-host of the Totally Tranmere
podcast and the author of an eclectic blog. Here at TTU, we would admit to having covered the
Prenton Park club less than we would like to have done in our three years of existence so to be
able to call upon the services of Paul is something of a boon.

Some times the beautiful game is, well, quite ugly - originally posted on Soccerlens.com
Footballers have it all fame, fortune and the chance to play the game that they, and we, love.
Many prospective talents never make the grade, and the chosen few who play in the Premier League
must be regarded as some of the luckiest people on the planet.
[O]nce upon a time, the PFA Awards were the undisputed measure of a season's most valuable players.
Voted for by the Professionals themselves, the response to their announcement was one of awed hush
and consent – how could mere onlookers presume to know better than those involved in the rough
and tumble of the actual sport?
With two games remaining in the regular League One season, the race for automatic promotion
couldn't be much tighter. Sheffield United are now just one point ahead of their steel city rivals,
Sheffield Wednesday, and must now contemplate life without top scorer, Ched Evans.
Evans, 23, was sentenced to five years in prison, this week, after being found guilty of rape.

Whilst watching Man Utd's incredible collapse against Everton today at Old Trafford, I was
reminded of a scene from the hit movie "Top Gun", when, following a practice flight where Lt. Pete
Mitchell, call sign "Maverick" had run his training officers ragged with his flying skills.
Liverpool forward Nathan Eccleston could soon be presented with the option of playing his club
football in Holland after it emerged that PSV Eindhoven were interested in the youngster.
According to Sky Sports, the 21-year-old has emerged as a genuine target for the Dutch giants,
despite making just two Premier League appearances for Liverpool.
Kenny Dalglish has described Liverpool's current form as the worst run he can remember as a
manager, player and supporter.
But the Reds boss would do well to recall a dreadful six-game losing run he oversaw while in charge
of Blackburn exactly 20 years ago.
The similarities are striking: Form that crumbled in March, big money signings failing to perform,
and back page stories questioning whether 'King Kenny' could still cut it as a manager.
There's a stat going around the interwebs that states our (mighty) 8 goals scored on the road is
the worst in the entire Football League. And as a result, we're 18th in the away table.
But here's another stat for you: we're somehow tied for fifth best in the EPL on away goals
conceded with just 19.

A few years ago if someone had suggested to me that Alex Song would one day be (nearly) world-class
I would have taken them straight to Broadmoor and had them sectioned myself.
At the beginning of his Arsenal career Song looked, in my opinion, horribly out of his depth. When
he went on loan to Charlton Athletic I actually believed he had probably found his level.
Leon Cort has a big summer head of him. While the attention of most of this country will be
squarely focused on events in Poland and the Ukraine, his national side Guyana will be stepping out
on to the turf at a yet to be determined Mexican stadium; this potential tussle with a man known as
Chicharito, the first of a sequence of six games that are the most important in the nation's
footballing history.

20 year-old James Henry Tavernier has so so far played 51 games in his fledgling football career.
Charlton's Johnnie Jackson and MK Dons' James Tavernier fight for the ball But only two of them are
with Newcastle, and he has racked up the rest on loan at Gateshead (18), Carlisle United (17),
Sheffield Wednesday (8)and MK Dons (6), where [.
Our latest scouting report from outside the Football League comes from Craig Telfer, whose website
Who the hell is Akabusi? documents the thrills and spills of supporting Scottish Second Division
side Stenhousemuir FC. Here, Craig widens his brief to consider those SFL players potentially
capable of doing a job in England's equivalent divisions.
It only feels like yesterday when United advanced into the semi-final of the FA Youth Cup with a
determined victory over a very decent Charlton Athletic side who refused to be beaten until James
Wilson's dramatic late winner was enough to finally see them off. United started favourites that
night at Old Trafford but tonight [.
Arsenal defender Carl Jenkinson has targeted Liverpool's scalp ahead of tomorrow's match between
the two sides at Anfield, suggesting that revenge will be on the Gunners' minds as they travel to
Merseyside.
An under-strength Arsenal side suffered one of their only two home defeats of the season at the
hands of the Reds in August when Kenny Dalglish's men clinically won 2-0 in a toughly contested
match.
"Imagine someone holding forth on biology whose only knowledge of the subject is the Book of
British Birds, and you have a rough idea of what it feels like to read Richard Dawkins on
theology." So begins Terry Eagleton's 2006 review of Dawkins' much-celebrated book The God
Delusion. Let's be charitable and overlook the irony (to which Eagleton seems oblivious) of such
sniffy dismissiveness coming from a literary critic who has openly confessed his own ignorance of
both science and theology and yet who is reviewing a scientist's book on theology.

A below par performance from Boro put a dampener on a nice day out in the Capital. Second half
goals from Michael Morrison and Bradley Wright-Phillips were enough to give Charlton the 3 points,
but in truth the scoreline could have been much worse for the visitors, who had Chris Day to thank
for keeping it respectable.
Manchester United are through to the Youth Cup quarter-final following a 5-1 victory over
Swansea. Gyliano van Velzen scored twice and the other goals came from Jack Barmby, Sam Byrne and
Tyler Blackett. Barmby and Blackett particularly shone.
United will now play against the winners of the Charlton and Tottenham tie on a fortnight.
The highly anticipated match involving of the U.S. Men's National Team's top talents kicks off at 3
p.m. ET today (FOXSoccer) when Tim Howard and Landon Donovan at Everton welcome Clint Dempsey's
Fulham in the fourth round of the FA Cup.
Dempsey has been white hot for Fulham, having scored two hat tricks in the last month, including
one against Charlton in the third round.
Clint, to coin the phrase from former SportsCenter anchor Dan Patrick, is 'en fuego'. Dempsey
dumped in three second half goals as Fulham raced to a 5-2 victory against Newcastle this
afternoon.
Deuce becomes the first American to score a hat trick in the Premier League - did we mention he
scored three against Charlton in an FA Cup match two weeks ago?
Jonjo Shelvey has spoken of his admiration for fellow central midfielder Jay Spearing and
commented: 'I look up to Jay'.
Liverpool's No.33 netted his first goal in a red shirt during the FA Cup 3rd round victory over
Oldham Athletic as he partnered Spearing at the heart of the Reds' midfield.
"Jay is a top, top player.

A lot of column centimetres have been devoted to Huddersfield Town striker Jordan Rhodes in recent
weeks and to have kept his head while others around him have been placing it upon the financial
guillotine has been admirable – yes, that's you David Gold. Three excellent articles in The
Seventy Two have explored the appeal of the man while our own blogger Ben profiled him in these
pages as 2012 drew to its conclusion.

A solid, professional job in the end. Charlton, as the third division table shows, are a tidy
enough team, but in the end class told. Clint Dempsey scored a hat-trick, Damien Duff whopped in
another, and Fulham are in the hat for the 4th round.
We scored early, Murphy's through ball finding Dempsey, who lifted the ball home expertly.
