Seven MLS sides stumbled on Tuesday in the third round of the 2012 Lamar Hunt US Open Cup. Some
were shocking, others were surprising and a couple were kind of expected.
New England, LA, Chicago, Columbus, FC Dallas, Houston and Real Salt Lake all fell on Tuesday
making this year's third round one of the more exciting rounds in USOC history.
Let's get the obvious out of the way up front, shall we? There is not currently, nor has there ever
been, a full, traditional system of on-field-merit-based promotion and relegation in any American
pro soccer endeavor that I'm aware of[1].
With that said, the essence of promotion and relegation, the ability to move between
levels of a nebulous pyramid, does exist, and has for more than a decade[2].

Rochestor Rhinos forward Andrew Hoxie was substituted into the club's match versus the Los
Angeles Blues at halftime to make an impact, and he did not take long to do just that.
Hoxie scored the winner five minutes after entering the scoreless game on Friday night, and he
then helped set up an insurance goal shortly after.

When the Pittsburgh Riverhounds scored late to pull level with Orlando City SC, some fans
thought the game would end in a 1-1 draw.
It turns out that was far from the case.
Orlando City topped Pittsburgh, 3-2, in a thrilling match at the Citrus Bowl in Orlando,

Not even games on back-to-back days are enough to ruin the run of good form the Rochester Rhinos
are currently on.
The Rhinos tied the USL Pro record for wins to start a season while also extending their shutout
streak to six games by winning two matches this weekend.

By FRANCO PANIZO
The Dayton Dutch Lions failed to pick up their first win of the season in two tries this
weekend, but they did manage to put an end to the last impeccable record in the league.
The Dutch Lions ended the Rochester Rhinos' perfect start to the season and their six-match
shutout run by grabbing a 1-1 draw at Sahlen Stadium on Friday.
The forth round potential pairings for the US Open Cup are now set. The bracket is really
starting to finally take shape.
Some potential big matches include Seattle at Portland, Houston at Dallas, and Salt Lake at San
Jose.
2012 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Schedule
FOURTH ROUND Tuesday, June 5
New England Revolution (MLS) at New York Red Bulls (MLS): Red Bull Arena;
Harrison, N.
The Seattle Sounders' road to a fourth consecutive U.S. Open Cup title may very well end up
going through their archrivals.
Should the Sounders and Portland Timbers each win next week's third-round Open Cup matches, the
two will square off at Jeld-Wen Field in a must-see fourth-round clash.
Since it's a holiday, I'm going to be lazy and post a press release I received from the San
Antonio Scorpions regarding Tuesday night's US Open Cup Match with the Houston Dynamo:
SAN ANTONIO, TX (May 28, 2012) - The San Antonio Scorpions will face off with the two-time Major
League Soccer champion Houston Dynamo in the third round of the Lamar Hunt U.
After a strong second half and playing a man down for most of the match, the SA Scorpions FC
earned their way into the second round of the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup with a 2-0 win over the Laredo
Heat. The club secured passage to advance in the historic tournament and also retained the [...]

Tuesday. (Photo: Derek Meluzio/pennlive.com)
(Editor's note: Prior to each Revolution match, New England Soccer Today will invite a
reporter who covers the Revolution's upcoming opponent to provide greater insight on what to expect
on gameday.
The Houston Dynamo will travel roughly 200 miles down I-10 to San Antonio to face the expansion
San Antonio Scorpions of the North American Soccer League (NASL). It's the Dynamo first match in
the 2012 US Open Cup tournament and hopefully won't be there last.
The Scorpions are 4-3-1 so far this season, good enough for third place in the NASL
standings.

In Week 7 the Rochester Rhinos were forced to settle for their first draw of the season. In Week
8, they suffered their first loss.
The Rhinos were defeated by the Harrisburg City Islanders, 1-0, on Friday night at Skyline
Sports Complex courtesy of a second-half goal from Morgan Langley.
MLS teams enter the U.S. Open Cup's third round Tuesday night, and while plenty of regional
bouts headline the night's slate, the non-regional ones carry some of the top story lines.
The Seattle Sounders begin a third straight Open Cup title defense at home against the NASL's
Atlanta Silverbacks.
This is an attempt at a live blog Game Thread for the Dynamo's Lamar Hunt US Open Cup match
tonight vs. the San Antonio Scorpions. Please feel free to post at will here if you are following
the match, which is being live streams on HoustonDynamo.com. You can also follow it via the
